Ok all Abby is making me nuts!!!!! She chews on everything. She has a crap load of toys she chews them too but also anything else in sight. If I go for her she runs. I chase her, I run the other way and she will follow but as soon as I go for her she runs again. I love my puppy so much BUT I AM GOING TO HURT HER!!!!!!!! I am kidding I would never hurt her but she is making me crazy. I cant afford obidient classes. She is only 10 months old will this change or will she always chew everything?? I have NEVER had a dog that does that.
Any ideas would be great!

I started having this problem with Whitney, and if say anything verbal to discourage or stop it she flat out ignores me, looks and ignores. So I discovered she really pays attention if I clap. One big clap, a firm NO and I replace what ever she is chewing on with a real chew toy, like a bone, because I know she likes to chew on them and they are ok to chew on. She is really getting the picture with this. I also clap when she in on the table, I use it before any command, the big thing with her is if you do not have her undivided attention the command us useless. It is getting to the point if I clap she knows she shouldn't be doing what she is doing, have tried everything in the book since I am with her all the time, this is the only thing that has worked with her. Worked for me.

I think you should look her in the eye and tell her that you're the boss, and that this monkey business will no longer be tolerated. And that if she intends of ruining your funiture in the future (or Donna Karen sunglasses in my case - poop!), that she will have to get a job, such as acting in dog food commercials or pulling wagons full of groceries to pay the bills.

If that fails, put some peanut butter in a kong/get a marrow bone or bullystick (something deliciously stinky and meaty) and swap it out with whatever she is choo-choo chooing.

Sheesh.

ps. Chewing is not a bad thing. Dogs do it to relieve stress, teeth and relieve boredom. Kind of like my binge drinking.

I have caught Whitney chewing on my beloved handbag (Dooney & Bourke Nile Satchel). AAAAHHHH we had to nip that in the butt. It it kept on the fridge now.

Excellent choice, Whitney. Impeccable taste!

Puppy chewing can reach epic proportions…. Not particularly looking forward to it as Lamont will arrive in 2 weeks.

This worked for our English – the most stubborn of the stubborn.

Clap to get attention then get down to his eye level and say firmly, (but not yelling) in a growly voice “leave it” followed immediately by a “replace,” of the object he was tenderizing (in our case, a nylabone or KONG with PB) Then “Good Boy x 100 times.”

We chose “Leave It ” for both indoor and outdoor items that were absolute no’s and, after about 1.5 yrs, he finally had it. We NEVER had a problem after that.

This meant we had to have 3-4 Nylabones and KONGS planted all over the house but it was worth it.

Items pulverized prior to our dog “getting it” you ask ?? …

Recycling bin
Toilet bowl plunger
Cell phones x 2
Pashmina evilicon
Toes of husbands cowboy boots – (hated them anyway)
Shoes, shoes, shoes …
Tredmill – (the rubber runway part)
2 legs of 1 Windsor chair
remote control x 3
hairbrushes
garbage pail
The swiffer
Assorted magazines, books etc.
Pillows
garden hose
bicycle tire and kick stand

I’m sure there were other but these stand out as the most notable.

Chewing has never been a real issue for Penny. The worst she has done was chew a pair of $12 flipflops from Target and a few chews on our IKEA coffee table.
First, she gets a ton of exercise and is usually exhausted. Second, I keep a squirt bottle handy and if she starts to nibble on a forbidden object, I stealthily squirt her with it from a distance. She startles and backs away from the object. I then pretend I had nothing to do with the squirt. The best part is that she associates the yucky stimulus with the object, not with me, so she will refrain from chewing that thing whether I'm around or not.
So far this has worked like a charm. Unfortunately her daddy isn't as vigilant, which explains the flipflops and the coffee table.

Anytime MIA chews on somthing she shouldn't Ex: fingers, toes, shoes or WALLS ....(yes my little Mia has chewed thru the wall ! evilicon )
I will also use the method of redirecting her attention to one of her toys. I found the Kongs work the best. I put a little of that canned Kong filling( cheez wiz stuff) in and she is good for a 1/2 hour.
I can now leave her in a room by herself and don't have to worry about her getting into mischief .

Wait...they chewed WALLS?

Jeez, and I was a little PO'd about my flipflops, I guess I should count my blessings...
