Yesterday I was relaxing in our familyroom when all of a sudden Ferris got up and ran to a corner of the room. I watched him suddenly jump back. Well...Ferris found a snake in the room!!! As soon as I saw the head of the snake I put Abby and Ferris outside and went back to investigate. I immediately looked for the tail and quickly determined that it was not a rattlesnake. I called my brother (who is very familiar with snakes) and he said it was a harmless gopher snake. A few minutes later Jonah (my son) came home and he caught it and turned it loose outside.
I have NO idea how this creature got into our house. I suspect that it was in the garage and my husband has a habit of leaving the door from the garage into the kitchen open. I am not afraid of snakes but do worry about them rattlers. I have never seen a rattlesnake on our property but know they are in the area. I have a co-worker that just put her two dogs through a class where they teach dogs to stay away from snakes. Apparently the class does work but they use shock collars for training....which I would never consider for my two. They say this year the snakes are really out there this year.
I'm glad that Ferris was the one to find the snake. I think that if it had been Abby...she would have gone for the kill.....protecting me. Carolyn
