Thanks for asking, Lisa!

We chose "Luna" because I am a graphic designer and the last firm I worked for printed EVERTHING on Luna Matte (a brand of paper) and I always gave them a hard time about it. They thought it was pretty funny when I announced her name - joke's on them! I also thought that Frenchies looked like they came from space, hence "moon".

Interestingly, Luna loves to eat paper.

ps. If I get another dog, I'm calling it George Michael - yes, like the singer. He's so gooey and cheesy! It would be a hysterical name for a dog. There's a Yorky across the hall named Chuck Norris. It cracks me up, especially since he's so yappy and frail.

Whit is named after Whitney Houston (PRE BOBBY!!!!!!!!) I sing as a hobby, mostly karaoke cause it is fun except the bar smoke!!! Starting from when I was really young I loved Whitney Houston and she inspired me to lock myself in my room and sing over and over with the musice coming from my little PINK stereo, perfecting my sound (hahaha) my first Whitney record was one of those really small vinyls. So I named my little precious Whitney. I thought about naming her Contessa after "The Barefoot Contessa" (the cooking people will know who this is) and I would have just called her Tessa. I was going to stay with my funny chef theme... my cat is named Suki [sookie] after the funny chef on Gilmore Girls (I am actually a closet fan). But it seemed more of a common name. I offen winder if I should have named her something different because people sometimes say uuuuuuhhhhh you named her after Whitney Houston????!!! Cause what she has become and also cause I still have not sent in her AKC Reg papers cause I want a fun long name but now I have know Idea what to write! Oh I was going to name her Olive if she was black brindle and then her full name was going to be my 'Extra Virgin Olive Oil' but I got a firm "no way" from the man. He is now banned from commenting on names I choose for the 'kids'.

This is going to be a really fun topic I hope everyone chimes in.

I loved Whitney PRE Bobby (haha! I typed that in "booby" at first), too. And what about Mariah? I think she's normal again, after her mental breakdown. Your next dog could be Mariah!!!!

And I love Gilmore girls, as well. My husband's like, "Are you watching that fast talking show again????"

What if Whitney's registered name was, "[Name of Kennel's] Whitney Before Bobby?" That would be hi-larious.

Great thread! I love hearing the interesting stories...

Mac was named after Mack Trucks...

Mac's mum went into labour before the litter were actually due. On seeing this, the owners quickly got her in their car and start to drive her to the local vet. As they lived on the farm, the local vet was quite a distance away.

Unfortunately, because of this distance they did not make it, and Mac's mum started to give birth in the car... so they quickly pulled into a truck stop. What happened next was so sad - the mum gave birth naturally to the puppies... and the only one that survived (out of four) was a little boy (the runt of the litter) who happened to have a smallish head! They named him Mack after the Mack Trucks in the truck stop.

When we got Mack, we couldn't possibly change his name - it suited him perfectly! I just changed the spelling, and sometimes call him Macintosh (if we're trying to sound classy ;) )

Borgan- My mom said the same thing about naming the next child Mariah, in a way I would feel like a mean mommy for naming my kids after public women with mental issues!! hahaha My baseball team thinks it would be funny if we got a boy and named him Bobby, people would really look at me nuts then like I may be in the same boat as that couple. Tony wants to name a boy Yoda. He also calls Gilmore 'Gaymore'. Every Tuesday is 'Gaymore' night ,as he calls it, my cousin and I go to my Grams every Tuesday have Thai and watch it. It is our girl date night. Now Whit is part of the evening event!

aussieowner - That is so sad about the litter. Mack is fortunate to have gotten to have the chance to be a part of your family. I don't think I would have changed his name either!

Gilmore, Gaymore... whatever.... I dig it! appicon

Stella's name came rather uneventfully...
I was simply trying to think of a name that expressed the typical frenchie characteristics.....

big, rough, bullie dog attitude in a stout, compact body.
mix in a little snorting and some snobbery...

= Stella!

I had a few others, but this one just seemed to stick (plus my other half likes it cuz he can pretend she's named after the beer  )

great thread!

I was not having any luck naming my first Frenchie....I had decided that I WAS going to name her before I brought her home.

So...on impulse I went to the computer and brought up a list of "girl" names. The FIRST name that I saw was Abigail.

Now....can anyone guess where FERRIS came from????? Not hard....one of my favorite movies is "Ferris Buehlers Day Off". Perfect...both laid back, funny boys. :D Carolyn

Whatever Lola wants ... Lola gets OR Her name was Lola - she was a showgirl

Then there's "Sank heaven, for little girls ..."
from Gigi

I wanted to commemorate their wonderful history of being the preferred breed of the Parisian prostitute ... so I HAD to name one of them Gigi! Lola was originally named 'Maxine' in honor of my favorite Uncle Max, but that was just such a preposterous name for such a little mischief maker. When I changed her name to Lola, my uncle declared that it was in honor of his 'real' name, Laurence ... except that I didn't know that Laurence was his first name and Max was his second! Then, one of my best girlfriends, named Ginny, decided that Gigi was named in honor of her  .

Tigger, came named from the breeder. His father's name was Tiger and he has such beautiful red, bengal tiger looking stripes that I absolutely had to keep the name ... and, of course, Tigger was my favorite Winnie-the-Pooh character "He's bouncy, bouncy, bouncy, bouncy - fun, fun, fun, fun fun. The most wonderful thing about Tigger is heeeeeee's the only one! Yes, he's the only one!"

GREAT post!!

I love this thread too! Very cute.

Adora
I originally wanted to name her Libby, but my husband said no (brat). So I searched and searched for at least 2 weeks until I came across the name Adora which seemed to fit her perfectly. She was being called Dora by the person I got her from and she already answered to it. When I first saw her in her crate, I said "Hi Adora!" and she gave me tilty-head. The ultimate sign of approval :)

Beckham
Well - his story is not quite as warm and fuzzy. I found him when he was 10 weeks old while doing an audit for work at a apartment complex in a bad neighborhood. When I found him he was trying to play with a soccer ball that a boy was kicking in the common area, when Beckham tried to go for the ball the beast of a child kicked him thru the air. After all was said & done, he came home with me and was named Beckham after David Beckham (the hot soccer player) since he was trying to play soccer and he is so handsome ;)

I'll probably bore you to tears with my cats names, but here they are in case you're interested!

SparkyLou
Name derived from chewing on Christmas tree lights and my love of the middle name Lou

Luna
Was going to be Serena after an anime character my husband likes, but once we saw her personality (far from serene), we went with Luna as in Lunatic

Oscar
Had a dream about having a cat named Oscar, so when I found my kitten he looked like an Oscar and it just suits him

Gus
After the chubby gray mouse in Cinderella

Well it is not very hard to see why I whould name a male stocky-to-be frenchie after the big one of three musketeers  I actually wanted to name him Mike at forst. When the man sayed NO! I went a step from there and chose Tyson. Another NOOOO!!! from the husband... He wanted Aramis but I do not want a name with three silibles. Impossible to spell right. Since he didn´t have a better name I actually started to call him Tyson when we were driving home but somebody came on Porthos and that was that. I still don´t really like it but the dog behind that name if fabulous with every name :D

Some of the stories behind how some of you selected names for your Frenchies are even BETTER than I imagined! I've really enjoyed reading them...

Keep em coming!

I can only comment on our English as our Frenchie won't be ready to bring home for another 9-10 weeks.

We named our English "Herbie"!

We wanted a name that had some comedic quality to it but was also cute.... and we thought, let's face it ... the world does NOT need another English Bulldog named "WINSTON"! ... (after Winston Churchill, who, by the way, NEVER even owned an English Bulldog).

People would immedialy break out smiling or laughing when we told them his name ... it was quite endearing and the neighbourhood kids loved it.

They'll never be another "Herbie" quite like him ...

As for our upcoming Frenchie ...
If it's a Male - we like "LaMont" ... If it's a female - we'll go with "Laverne" ...

Cheesey, comedic but oddly refined and sweet ... (we think).... (we hope)

Lisa
16th June 2005, 09:09 AM
OMG - ALMOST FORGOT ...

"Herbie" was inspired by the GREAT Herb Tarlic of WKRP fame ...
"LaMont" (my husbands choice) was inspried by "LaMont" Sanford - a la "Sanford and Son" ...
"Laverne" - inspired by another great "Penny Marshall" a la "Lavern and Shirley" and also, I've read so many story's about the "IT'S ALL ABOUT ME" female frenchies - high on attitude, but really big softies deep down ... The name seems to match what the quintessential female frenchie is all about ...

WHEN in doubt … head to the deli! :D

My favourite names (especially for males) are the old timer, Jewish guy names. IMO - They have SOOOOOOoooooooo much character and really suit both french and english bulldogs@

I worked in a deli during my formative years and had some of the best times of my life hanging out with the regulars after my shift. I learned a lot from these men, not the least of which was how to make a great CB on rye!

Here are my favourites representing some of my MOST treasured friends from those days ….

Morty

Saul - (had a bloodhound named "Saul" - no kidding)

Hershel

Reuben

Abe

Bernie – (which also inspired "Herbie" and. who had the pleasure of meeting him before he passed on … Bernie would always sneak Herbie strips of brisket under the table. His GAS just about killed us during the night, but it was worth it, letting Bernie think he was pulling one over on us).... and

Moishe!

So, that said, “La Mont” MAY become Morty ….we’ll wait and see.
I wish I had 7 males... Each one of them would be named from the list above!!! :)

ROFLOL! I love those names!

We like to name our animals people names- for example, Bob and Harold, the guinea pigs, Wolfhound was Maggie (Yawn- AKC name Merrie Margaret Mavourneen) Peke a poo "Louie" (another yawn). So this new frenchie boy has to have a people name that's funny when applied to a dog. Great list!...Moishe, LOL!!!

Great stories, everyone!

Our fb girl Eve was already named when we got her. I was told that some kids named her.

Our newfoundland Tonka truck was named named by me because we knew he would be a very large dog and I had happened to see those new bright yellow Ford Tonka trucks concepts that ad just come out.

Our little dalmatian was named by me because we just liked the name.

Oh, by the way I live on Luna Ave for those named "Luna" :)

My fiance and I went to Maui last summer with my best friend and her boyfriend. We were driving on the Road to Hana with a tape telling us about the different places to stop and what we would see there. It said that Kai meant ocean in Hawaiian. Right then I said that when I get a dog I am going to name it Kai. A month later my best friend was looking online for a pug and saw and ad for a Frenchie and called me. When we went to go see him it was love at first sight :p When we asked what his name was she told us "Kainoa" she explained that her family was Hawaiian. My best friend was floored when I told her our new baby's name. He was our "fate" dog. He is the best thing that has happened us. I can't picture life without him. He goes to work with me and greets the patients when they are in the waiting room. Some of our patients are traumatized children and having Kai in session with them puts them at ease.

Well, I wanted to choose a girl's name and I also had read that dogs respond very well to names that end in an "eeee" sound. So, I had come up with Cammie, but my husband wasn't crazy about that. He came up with something that I wasn't crazy about (I forget what it was already!!!). So, I was speaking to my sister on the phone and she said "Molly would be cute" and right away I knew I loved the name. My husband also loved it - and she looks like a Molly too!

I just mentioned this in another post the other day, I wanted to give him a french name, Napoleon (after the post-revolution emperor of France), Louis (after Louis XIV), and Pepe (after Pepe le peu) were all under consideration. I had him home for a few days and still couldn't settle on one... I was running them buy him (the nameless dog, at that point)... "How about Louis?.... How about Pepe?.... How about Napoleon?" When I got to Napoleon he started barking at me.... so he sort of chose his own name. :D But it was my favorite of the three too, so maybe I prompted him subconsciously. ;)

I think Napoleon is a great name for him... a Frenchman of short stature but big/dominant attitude, a little snobby, occasionally exiled to Elba (i.e. his crate), only to reassume his throne when he escapes!

Ok, here is the story of Dari.

I have always just "known" the names of my animals.. they come to me.And I was very lucky to find Dari's breeder and get Dari.

I had a friend who tried for years to get pregnant and could not; finally she gave up.And then, on her own,she got pregnant and named her daughter Darielle. In Hebrew it means "Gift of God".I had not seen this person in years.

The night before I was to get my dog, this name just popped into my head. And I knew it was the right name. She was coming at the right time. My mother was in the final stages of a terminal illness;any other time just would not have worked.Dari's arrival helped us thru a very terrible time.

Her full name is Darielle F.B'dog..
She lives up to the meaning to the fullest. Her prescence was a distraction and a healing. Her antics made us laugh..There has never been a gift like her ever....
The Buddha says that animals are parents/guardians come back from another life to watch over us.That they have a job to do.Dari is doing her job.

i think sometimes a name just comes to you. and sometimes you can wrack your brains for days, even weeks trying to find just the right one. rockys dad was "rock-n-roll around the world" so we used part of his name to get "rock's rockin lil' rebel" rocky for short. then we found out later that the breeder of rockys dad also has a dog that looks alot like rocky ,named rebel. and rocky just fits him. my son calls him rocky balboa, after the movie. cause he says he looks "tough" .lol
quinn named anastasia (annie) after the movie about the lost russian princess. and it seemed fitting because we bought her directly from russia. but we recieved her pedigree and her registered name is "strong stael allia fair lady" so i think when we transfer her to akc,we will have to leave that name. or so i have been told.
and that is the how they got to be rocky and annie. :)

I am the world's worst when it comes to picking a name for my dogs..lol. But here goes

FRENCHIE ... My first one... Brindle and white female

I had no idea what to name her. Nothing seemed to fit, or sound right. I tried to think of something which had to do with her being brindle and white, but nothing I liked came to me.Finally after having her for a few days and simply just calling her frenchie, it sorta stuck. Then I though, well frenchie is not a bad name and about as good as any thing else I have come up with. So it just stayed FRENCHIE.

OLLIE BUBBA ... My second one ...Fawn With black mask male

Now he was much easier. I had been on this board for a week or so, and I really liked the name of Twist-N-Shouts Ollie. Also, my minister's name is Ollie, who is just a swell guy. My husband had been calling him Bubba though. So, it became OLLIE BUBBA

BRANDY ... My third one ...Brindle and white female

She came pretty easy also. The day I brought her home had been a really, and I do mean REALLY hectic day. That night I decided to kick back with a glass of brandy, her in my lap, and watch a movie. As I was pouring the dark colored blackberry brandy. It just came to me.. Hmm. Dark, sweet, BRANDY

So, there is my three frenchie names.

P.S. Sorry I have not been a big poster as of late, but my parents have been ill and have had some dog problems with a breeder friend's, friend, of which I now have 4 english bulldogs as well. I have just been to busy, tired or stressed..lol.

Everyone knows how I named Dari.

C.C kaht. She was born in Conn and the breeder moved to North Carolina. All my animals have last names.. So C(Conneticut)C(Carolina)Kaht..

Butch. I could not decide between Butch and Buster. When I saw him , he had the BLUEST eyes in the world;like Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.. And I changed the kid to well.. Butch Katzidy.

Very Cool. I like Butch better than Buster, though both are good names, and I did have a horse named Buster. I have a really good friend named Butch.

The english bulldog deal was sorta a rescue thing, with the same breeder i got my frenchies from. Now I love both breeds, but think I have to say I am just a bit more partial to the frenchies. They have just totally stolen my heart. I have loved frenchies though ever since the first one I ever seen about 10 years ago.

But my English are cool dogs to, with great personalities

P.S. My parents are doing better. It is just when one gets ill, then the other is not really able to care for them without help, and that is where I come in.

At the same time, all these health problems were going on with this breeder friend, and boy I tell ya, between rescuing dogs, and taking care of parents., it has been a really hectic month for me.

But parents are doing better. Bulldogs are here with me, and between me and my breeder friend we have found homes for the remaining dogs, which weren't that many fortunately.

Maxwell Edison is named after the character in the Beatles song. We wanted a name that was something music-related because it's fun to see who "gets" the reference and who just thinks we're odd. Also, we're moving to Philadelphia in the fall for Maxwell's (human) daddy to go to medical school - so naming the dog after a fictional serial-killer medical student was the obvious choice.

I wanted to name our frenchie Frenchie but my husband thought that was boring so we tossed a million names around before we got her. Then on the way home with her in our van I sat and looked at her and the name just came to me. Her name is Stitch named after the alien character in the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch. She looks just like him except she's not blue.

I agree with Lisa that old timer Jewish guy names are great for Frenchies. We picked the name MAURICE because we got him in France, plus we could call him MORRIE, which suits his old man face. That doesn't stop us, though, from calling him Mauritzio, Mauritius, Mr. Morinaga, Buster, Buster Brown, Bubba, Boobila and a host of other non-related names. He knows his real name but will respond to anything if the tone of voice is right.

Some of you already know why I picked the name Dobby, especially those HP fans out there! :D

Dobby is a house-elf, a short creature with large bat-like ears and enormous eyes. He's fiercely loyal to Harry Potter (even though Harry isn't his master) in J.K Rowling's HP series. He's so cute and definitely one of my favorite characters from the books!

I actually found a song for "Dobby, the House Elf" online, how funny!
Here're the lyrics and also link below -

Dobby the House Elf
was a ragged mass of groans,
wearing one old dirty pillowcase
wrapped around his weary bones.

Dobby the House Elf
disobeyed his master cruel,
just to try and warn his hero of
the dangers back at school.

He tried so many tricks to keep
poor Harry safe at home.
But Harry got to school and faced
Tom Riddle all alone.

Now, Dobby the House Elf
thanks to Harry was set free.
Now he holds his head up high
and wears his socks up to each knee.

Dobby the House Elf
is no longer Malfoy's slave.
When you mention Harry Potter you
will hear that Dobby rave.

Harry's a hero!
Harry's a hero!
Hear that Dobby rave.

this is such a great thread!

and what's even more funny is that my lola is also named for a french prostitute (or the idea anyway) . well, sort of. i don't why but i just love both the lola songs: "her name was lola . . ." and "lola, la la la la lola"

i was having such a hard time finding the right breeder and puppy. and the breeder i got her from was already calling her lola (which suggested to me that we were a perfect fit!).

and this is slightly aside, but i have a friend with a weimereiner (sp?) named homer after homer simpson and it just fits too perfectly! funny how that happens.

When I was thinking of getting a Frenchie I liked the name Sydney for a female (probably because of Sydney Bristow on "Alias") or Nemo for a male. As it turned out, I decided on a male and the breeder had called him Sidney--I chose to keep the name since I'd been certain on Sydney for a female. Plus, after meeting him it was just the perfect name.

I love movies/TV, so in addition to Nemo, I toyed with Yoda and Gizmo (from the Gremlins) for a male. I also liked Monkey a lot, so now I often call him "Sidney Monkey."

Piggy chose his name, too. I was set on Mojo or Harley before I got him home, but when I tried them out on him he litterally rolled his eyes and snorted at me. My boyfriend and I tried several other names but couldnt get him excited, even with treats. Finally, my roomate was taking pictures of him at the end of his first week with me and said "he looks like a little Piggy Pig!" and out of nowhere he started dancing around on his hind legs and jumping laterally across the kitchen. We started saying "piggy piggy piggy!" and he would go nuts. It has now evolved to included Pigman, Pigford, PigPog, PigPog Powerdog and countless other permutations.

EllieMae -

We are Borgan (Brooke and Morgan... so cheesy, I know) and we have Luna, a 2 year old brindle female Frenchie, and we live on the North Shore. You should come to our Vancouver Frenchie Group sometime. It's once a month. Even if your dog isn't into playing, it's still fun for us humans to see so many Frenchies in one place and share info.

How old is your girl? How on earth did you get a dog from the Ozarks? Are EllieMae's parents cousins? Just teasin'! ;)

Brooke.

Hahaha, no cousin lovin in her lines! I would love to get together with your Vancouver Frenchie Group! Ellie Mae loves playing nobody is a stranger to her!
She is from Missouri (obviously) I found her breeders web site after months of searching as I couldn't find any breeders in BC! I dunno what happened there. I called a couple people and they never got back to me, so I continued my search. We found that it was cheaper (not that you can put a price on your baby) to have her flown in from missouri than drive to Alberta. She is completly guaranteed, I had her triple checked and talked to the breeders vet. I was so scared to get her from the states because of border issues, but it all went smooth, and she was really quite happy and alert when we got her, no signs of distress.
After I saw her picture, I knew she was meant to be with us, so that is her story. Not as exciting as it could be...I should add some cousin lovin', liven this story up!;)
Lilydog How would I join the frenchie map???

Lilydog- Your post saddened me. I just want to let you know that I had her breeder very well researched, called many refernces including her vet and Ellie Mae is in perfect condtition as well as full AKC registered and approved. Every once and ahwile a chance is something that should be taken, as long as you know what you are doing. I am sorry if this seems a bit defensive but Puppy Mills are not a subject I take well too, it makes me loose faith in humanity. My husband and I won't even set foot in a Pet store that sells animals. Fish included.
Peace

Just as a point of information; AKC registration is ONLY showing what the parentage of a dog is..
There is NO such thing as AKC approval... All the AKC is ,is a registration organization...They do not approve or disapprove of anything...

As for a dog from a puppymill; it can be in perfect health. It is the parents of the dog that suffer anytime one is bought...As for using a "breeders" vet for a reference... well ,what do you expect the Vet to say?

If I seem a little on the Offensive, I am ... I am with rescue.. And I see how unscrupulous "breeders" are getting smarter everyday...
Missouri is the center of the puppymill industry in this country..And most reputable breeders in the US do not sell thier dogs on the internet..

This is FYI; so if I am wrong.please do not take offense.

My boyfriend and I were trying to come up with perfect name for out little Frenchie and one day we were watching this cartoon and there was a goofy character that wasn’t the brightest but he was very sweet named Donut. So we had that name along with four others to choose from when we went to pick him up and take him home and we came he just looked like a Donut.

It’s a goofy name but he is a goofy puppy

If I told you the name of her breeder would you be able to tell me if my worst nightmare had just come true:(
I thought I was so careful, as in Canada I know of many very reputable breeders that sell their pups over the internet...
I would expect a vet to tell the truth, is that not their job in the US?
I would not take offense, until someone tried to accuse me of something.

Asking a Vet to tell the truth..About what? about the health of a dog at the moment? Or about the ethics of the person that MAY be paying the vast majority of his bills...Vets are PEOPLE...

We are not allowed to mention names of breeders on the forum..

Hey Devon,

Sorry I didn't get back to you! Crazy times! Yes, move went well and new digs are great. I guess I can't really say "new" though.. it's an 80 year old building!!! Claw foot tub, 10 ft ceilings, etc, etc. Loving working with this space - a lot more condusive to "stuff" than the modernist space we came from. Luna is liking the new king sized bed, too. This one's almost big enough for 2 of us and her gigantic ego. And the best part? NO BUGS!!!!!!!!!!!! Weee-hawww!!!

EllieMae - You sure went to town (or out of it) to get your baby! Can't wait to see her! Does she play the banjo?

Devon - I tried to join the map, but when I put in my city, it does this weird thing and won't accept my info. I thought it was a Mac incompatibility, but maybe it's just my lack of wit. Haha - maybe MY parents are cousins ;)

Thanks for the well-wishes, Fran!

Yah, it's becoming a bit of an epidemic in the larger cities with lots of transient people and close quarters.

Our next door neighbours were a weekly-rental apartment building (with little control over their tenants who threw their junk out into the alley) and we had a skylight over our bed. Bad combo; I'm sure that's how they got in. The city of Vancouver needs to crack down if they expect harmonious, integrated inner-city living. I would sue the city if I had time to spare.

How is New York dealing with it? I was reading some "Bedbug Blogs" from NYC and it made me feel so much better knowing I wasn't alone in my insanity!!!! I had thoughts of lighting my condo on fire and just walking away.

Melissa; it was not my intention to offend you in any way. You may never know for sure about the breeder of your pup, unless you happened to go to Missouri and pay them a visit. There are many Frenchie owners on this site who unbeknownest to them at the time got their dogs from less than reputable places, some are healthy and others have had problems. On this forum we try to educate and share our experiences about the breed we all love so much.
Backyard breeders, puppymillers and importers are such a problem and if we could stop animal cruelty with stronger laws and enforcement that would be wonderful. It seems for now all we can do is try and make people aware of the problem and share our stories. I know you are an informed person, but as Fran says it is amazing how clever some of these people can be. If you haven't already done so check out the threads on the subject, there have been lots of good posts.
Glad to see you on the map, did you try out the satellite imagery.
Devon, Lily and Tashi.

Thank you for that, sorry if I went a bit on the defence mode, I just thought that I had done a good job...Oh well my Ellie is perfect and we love her, that is all we can do now. I wish I had found this site before I made my decision...Old news, time to educate other people about Missouri and listen to other name stories:)

When I decided to get a Frenchie after losing my best friend of 14 yrs, my PW corgi, Tyson, I wanted a very special name for him and spent hours looking up "French" names and compiling a list of possibilities. However, before my little buddy was ready to come home, I lost the list and couldn't remember a single one of the names I had picked out! Somewhere in that time, "Isaac" popped in my head and, while it certainly wasn't French, the meaning "laughing one" in Hebrew certainly seemed to fit him perfectly so it kind of stuck. He has certainly brought a lot of laughter and joy back into our household!

We named our frenchie Beelzebub Imogene but we call her Belzie for short. She is an awfully cute little devil, so the name seemed appropirate. I think she is growing into the name, becuase she can be such a little demon. It is a good thing she si so cute. Besides we are fond of Milton and the Bible (our cats are named Luciefer and Gabriel). Oh and Imogene means "in the image of" I just like the name, besides all of our pets have middle names.

As per this part to the discussion:

Ellie Mae; How brave of you to get your pup from an internet breeder, we hear so many horror stories about online pups.

Just to let you know. Slakker and I had the same frustration trying to find a FB pup in BC. We found our puppy via the internet. And I was very reticent about bring home our new family member that way but we had no luck finding a local breeder, and or even getting on a waitlist for the breeders in AB. We reasearched the breed and breeders for more than 2 years befor getting our pup. We ended up driving to Southern Oregon to bring home our Belzie. I was very impressed with the breeder - Very small, very experienced (19 years)-very concerned with maintaining the health of the breed. - refered to the pups as "her babies"-.Belzie is from a naturally whellped litter of 8 which I am told is not very common. Our experience has been good, but I don't think I would have been as comfortable without driving to meet her in person. Other than the "PuppyChow" and problems introducing a new food, we are very happy with our puppy. Incedentially we did manage to find a "broker" in our area. He/she "imported puppies from Europe beacasue they loved the puppies but didn't want to breed them." When we finally saw picitures of them neither pup was to CKC or AKC standards and they wanted top dollar for them. Unfortunately FB are getting more popular and the lack of reputable breeders in our area leaves the door open for brokers like the one we encountered.
We also looked at getting a rescued FB, but at the time there were none in Canada.

The "broker"you thankfully did not get your dog from had NO love for our breed( I am probably telling you something you know). Only love of MONEY...The people he imported his pups from were Puppymills...No reputable breeder sells thru a third party....EVER....

Your pup was naturally whelped? That is very unusual...And a litter of 8..WOW!

As a point of information; most of us have had to go out of our area to get our dogs.I live in NY and Dari came from Kentucky..Because our breed is rare , it is the very lucky person that can get a dog locally..So your situation is not unique...

Rella was named after her momma Zinderella that's how we came up with Rella. My new boy kinda named himself you know the cartoon character from bugs bunny Taz well in the morning he looks and acts just like him."CRAZY".. LOL. I was looking 2 years ago for a new edtion to my family and after looking and researching decided on the frenchie. They are a med. size dog with a big dog personality. I couldn't not expected all the joy and personality my girl has given to me! She is like one of my children. And Taz is right in there with her.

I went through several names before settling on Tully. Bond and Cato were looking good as well as Pax and Mani....but once we had him home he was just a sweet little Tully - which means Little Hill - which going off his daddy he will be when fully grown!

Your pup was naturally whelped? That is very unusual...And a litter of 8..WOW!

Tully was one in a litter of 7 pups and was naturally whelped as well. According to the breeder all the bitches on mum and dads sides are natural whelpers too.

I was VERY lucky to find a breeder not only 20mins up the road from me but one that had a pup for sale. Frenchies are like hens teeth here in Oz, so this was a small miracle. I was only looking for a couple of days before finding him through the internet. I believe that in the year 2006 if your not advertising on the net then where on earth have you been? I am really happy with the breeder and the dogs as I got to meet mum and dad and a 9mth old female from the previous litter the breeder had kept.
I suppose it is completely different in the states, everything people love slowly gets ruined by greed, I hope I never see that here.

Peabody that name; we Named him after Orson Welles and the peabody was just thrown in there because a) Orson Welles sounds a bit pretentious and b) peabody is what he is! he loves to make his outside pees :). It just has a nice ring to it doesnt it? Orson W. Peabody. Sounds like a very smart little man. We just got back from the Silver Lake dog park and boy was he loving running with the big boys. I always knew if I got a girl her name would be Roxy - I love snowboarding and named her after a surf/skate/snow brand for women.

When we get Roxy a brother -- maybe in a few years -- we've already got some names picked out. I love Tank and Diesel (I think there might be a few on this board, and I just think these are such cute names for a frenchie boy)......and there's another one we joke about that we got from one of Roxy's nicknames....

My boyfriend is always calling Roxy "School Bus Face" -- yes, I know it sounds totally retarded, but he says the square shape of her head and placement of her eyes and nose reminds him of the front of a big yellow school bus.....so the square head theme and nickname is an ongoing joke between us now....and that theme brought us to our third pick for a boy -- we will name him BOB, short for SpongeBOB SquareHEAD, after the children's show Spongebob Squarepants.

We named our little sweet-boy Augie. There was an old cartoon by Hanna Barbara that had the characters Augie-Doggie and Doggy-Daddy. When we got him home we were going crazy trying to come up with a name. Then I was joking with my husband while we were playing with our new puppy, calling him the Doggy-Daddy. We both looked at each other at the same time and said "Augie-Doggie"! Well, Augie came running up and we asked "Augie?", he cocked his head, and we knew it! Augie-Doggie was the name!

Orson W. Peabody got his name many different ways. We wanted a French name and then i saw that there was a french tale of a boy being raised in the woods by bears and his name was orson. and you know these guys look like little bears so we thought that was perfect. but orson welles was a fun name and when we would tell people his name was orson they would say he kinda looks like orson welles:) so there is the W. part of his name.
then a few nights later we were looking at his little puppy body and said he looks like a little pea. so Orson W. Peabody it has been ever since:) and we think it fits him perfectly

It was so much fun to read through everyone's names!

As for ours, the breeder had him named when we bought him and his call name was Bailey. But too many people immediately thought it was a girl, until they looked closer or we corrected him. So we played around with long a sounds and he's from Louisiana, and Gator stuck. The group of strangers around us at the time loved it, and he likes it. We're getting him his own crocodile dundee hat when we find one that fits :) And it turned out to be a perfect fit because he nibbles. If he REALLY likes you, or he's trying to get your attention, he uses his mouth more than other dogs. Doesn't bit and doesn't go overboard (well, except when he nibbled the calf of our cop friend in uniform who stopped by for his taxes). It took a while to convince him that Gator did it cause he liked him - lol.

As to our little girl, the breeder had named her Mariah. When my friend and dog partner Tony heard that name, he knew it was fate. He LOVES old westerns, watches them every chance he gets. And there's one with a song that goes something like "and they called the wind Mariah" as they're sojourneying across the US. So he starts singing the song right then and there and I knew he was a goner - lol. So her official name is Briarwood's Wind Named Mariah.

Lola was named "Lola" out of practicality: we wanted a two-syllable Spanish name with vowel sounds (my husband's family is Spanish). We loved the name and only found out later that there are 2 or 3 famous songs featuring Lolas, which we're quoted all the time.

Our next pup, arriving in August, will be a pied (mostly white with a couple black spots), and we've decided to name her Milou (MEE-lou), after the white fox terrier in the comic "The Adventures of Tintin" done by the Belgian artist Hergé. We liked the name, knew the comic strip, and it reminds us of when we lived in Belgium, even though I think technically, the name is for boys. (No one will know in the US!)

I also considered naming her Zizou -- I love the name (very cool with the Zs) and am a big fan of Zidane. But I didn't want to deal with hearing "What Lola wants, Lola gets" and "Isn't that the name of the French player who headbutted someone?" in the same breath every time I went out with my Frenchies! Selfish me.

I see Blaster is wearing Doggles in his picture. Does he like them and, if so, how long did it take him to get used to them?

We had a hard time coming up with a girl's name that we liked. (Boys names seemed to be no problem.....)

Finally we chose Roxy from a few favorites, and then promptly dubbed her Roxy Carmichael (name stolen from a movie)

She's very friendly and playful, so I think the name fits.

Well Lola was the name we loved from the start, and when we met her she loved it. She was sitting in her bed and was I saying Lo-la to her and she started barking like crazy! Well Boris was difficult because we didn't really have a name for a boy in our minds. But when we saw his pedigree he had several ancestors who were from the Boristi Kennel and well that’s where it came from. He is getting used to it but might think his name is Good Boy! Lola’s really name is Mia Valance and Boris is Waldor Athos.

Well, we loved Jack Jack the baby from that movie. Slowly that turned into Jackson. His registered name is The Honor of Stonewall, a bit of a history buff in me. I really find Stonewall Jackson to have been a wonderful person to read about. His stoic front, his kindness & intelligence seemed to have been exactly what my little Jackson is made of. :p

My Fiance thought that French Bulldog pups look like Stitch from the Disney movie, Lilo and Stitch. Since she was a girl though, she went with Lilo.

Not very imaginative I am afraid - we though - FRENCH bulldog, FRENCH name. We toyed with Pepe and Didier and lots of other names, but decided on Louis, and it suits him perfectly. Some times he is lou-lou, sometimes he is Lou-ington, louis puppy-boy and all manner of other things!!

Still, a strange thing on the french name front though, as we already have a name should we get another one (only a matter of time I am sure!!!) and it is a very Italian name. We thought the next Frenchie should be called Salvatore, so that they could sit together like the little mobsters they are and be 'Louis and Sal' - all good gangster movies have a Louie and a Sal (usually uncle Sal!!)

My husband names ours Jebus (Geebus) from an episode of the Simpsons. It is an odd name but it really fits him. I will be getting another Frenchie in the middle of Dec and am trying to find a name for him. If I was getting a little girl her name would have been Jezebel, but am getting stumped trying to find a name for a boy. We have nicknamed him LB (little brother) until we can come up with something else.

When we started looking for our first frenchie, my boyfriend just became a deputy sheriff, and now that he had the new job, he wanted to celebrate by buying me the dog of my dreams. When i started looking i had a boy name and a girl name picked out already. if i got a boy i was going to name him elvis, and if i got a girl i was going to name her co co chanel, because well of course i love chanel. my boyfriend said no to both of the names. i looked forever for our frenchie, i just couldn't find one. there is just so much fraud on the internet regarding these dogs. so when i found a breeder she sent me pics of the pups she had left, when i saw his pic, it was love at first sight. i called my boyfriend at work and told him the good news, right when someone picked up the phone i asked to speak to him. right when i asked to speak to deputy such and such, i knew i had a name. not deputy, that didn't sound right, but sheriff, yup sheriff. i called and told him i found a puppy and he was going to be on his way in a couple of days and i picked a name as well. as soon as i said sheriff, it just fit.

frenchies are like potato chips, you cant have just one. i want a brindle one and my boyfriend wants a red fawn one with a black mask. i already have the names picked out when we are ready to handle another puppy. i want another boy named diesel (my boyfriend drives a huge lifted diesel truck) and a girl named daisy, its my favorite flower. its weird all my girlfriends have their kids names picked out and i dont, i just have my doggies named picked out. haha

Arlo's breeder described him as being laid back. I saw his picture and he just seemed an Arlo. Naturally after Arlo Guthrie..who I imagine is also laid back.
Of course...Arlo is a ton of energy and only laid back now when he's sleeping! :) Plus his daddy likes to say he's "Ar lo dog" aka "Our low dog"

We named our Frenchie girl Shyla Honey after much deliberation. Shyla is a Hindu goddess name and means daughter of the mountain. We live in Taranaki on the North Island of New Zealand and the landscape is dominated by our beautiful mountain, Mount Taranaki. It looks very similar to Mount Fuji in Japan and the mountain and surrounding area was used in the filming of Tom Cruises Last Samuri. The honey part comes from her father who is called Roi De Miel which is French for Honey King and the fact that she is a beautiful honey colour.

When I got my cat 6 years ago, I wanted to give her an uncommon name, but one that had some kind of meaning/significance too. So, I decided name her "Frieda," after the great Mexican painter, Frida Kahlo. This turned out to be an appropriate name considering my cat's (and Ms. Kahlo's) neurotic tendencies.
Sooooo...now we have a little Frenchie to name and as long as all goes as planned, we will be getting a boy. After trying to come up with something good, and not having much luck, my husband suggested "Diego" for Diego Rivera, who was Frida Kahlo's husband. We both really liked this idea and are hoping it will be fitting for our new baby.
This should also be somewhat appropriate because Frida and Diego had a very tumultuous relationship - Diego had an affair with Frida's sister; Frida had affairs with other women; Frida & Diego divorced; Frida & Diego remarried - not the most stable relationship...since my Frieda has never lived with a dog before and is a little neuroric to begin with, I don't expect her relationship with our new pup to go much better - with the exception of the extramarital affairs ; )

Wow, my best friend got married last year to a chap from Taranaki - I am hoping to visit there one day as I have seen beautiful pictures and heard so much about it! I just have to wait for them to stop globetrotting - her husband has just started a two year contract in Dubai so they will not be back for a while :( Still, gives me a chance to save up!!

Boykins
26th January 2007, 05:56 AM
Boykins is actually short for Earl Boykins, which is her official full name. Yes, we have a girl named Earl - hence the name of my dogblog (below).

Back when the idea of getting a dog was just that, my boyfriend and I came up with several dog names:

Rerun: homage to both the character from "What's Happenin'" and the rarely seen little brother of Charlie Brown.

Slim Goodbody: If you're in your 30s, you might remember this guy from "Captain Kangaroo." He taught kids about health and eating right. And he wore a ridiculous flesh-toned bodysuit that had the inner workings of the human body painted onto it.

Super Poncho: a brand of hot dog in South America, apparently.

Baloney: well, 'cause it's fun to say! And how funny to be at the park and have to call out, "Baloney! Come!"

In the end, we went with Earl Boykins mostly because I love saying Boykins. The original Earl Boykins is a professional basketball player. Until recently, when he was traded to Milwaukee, Earl Boykins played with the Denver Nuggets. He's about 5'5", plays point guard, and is quite good! I mean, the guy plays professional basketball! The first time I saw him, I asked my boyfriend, "Who is the little guy out there?" "Oh, that's Earl Boykins." Well, that was all it took. I kept saying, "Boykins Boykins Boykins."

When we finally decided to get a frenchie, you can imagine how happy we were to name a little girl Earl Boykins.

I am picking up my new French Bulldog puppy this weekend, I can't wait, I am counting the hours! I have already named him D'Artagnan after the Chief of the French Musketeers, he was a real person and fictionalized in the Three Musketeer books. I wanted him to have a French name and I just loved how the name rolls off the tongue. I am calling him Dart for short.

However I love some of the names you guys have come up with! YODA! that makes me laugh! I also thought of Gremlin because they look like that nice gremlin guy.

LOL its fun!

My boy Boris has Athos in his pedigree, there were 3 boys in the litter so they each got a name from the musketeers, Athos is the drunk one right?
