Our dogs are gifts in our lives; gifts that we are given for a limited time.
From the day we get them, we know that they will leave before us.
Today one of Carolyn's friends left her.Today, one of those very special friends who graced her life and made her smile left.
Carolyn shared her home with Ripley, a standard poodle.A wonderful dog that I had the pleasure of meeting. Ripley was a gentleman to the end.And today he chose to go.
Ripley was an old man.It was his time. This did not make his leavetaking any less painful.
Ripley, old man, you leave a hole in the fabric of the house. A hole in the life of Carolyn. But you leave memories that will bring smiles and joy once the pain fades.
Good by old man. God speed old man. Say hello to the ones waiting for you. We will miss you.
Carolyn, may your grief be eased by the love Ripley gave.

Thank you, Fran and others for your kind words. I remember the day you met Ripley, Fran....he layed his head on your lap which was his way. He was my gentle giant. I first met Ripley when he was 3 weeks old. We were looking at a litter of 12 Standard puppies. We were really there to find a puppy for Jim. While Jim was milling around trying to decide which puppy he wanted...I plucked Ripley up and just held him. We returned several weeks later to pick up the puppy Jim had decided on. We were about ready to leave when I turned to Jim and told him I couldn't leave without the other puppy I had held. And so we had two.....and so Ripley became mine. He was my shadow, my friend for 16 1/2 years. Today was my b'day....and Ripley gave me his final gift....his sweet goodbye. Tonight will be hard....he has slept on the floor next to my side of the bed all these years. Yes...they are a gift that we must in time return.
Love you, Rip. Carolyn

Please don't think I added the b'day tag. It just popped up when I typed in the word. It looks so inappropriate. Carolyn

Carolyn,
Your family is in my thoughts today as you go through this difficult time. I know you feel truly blessed to have spent 16 1/2 years with Ripley - what a wonderfully happy, long life he led! My hope for you is that you are able to focus on the amazing life he shared with you and that you know he will be "out there" waiting for you, where he is eternally youthful and happy :)
Take care of yourself and give Abby and Ferris a few extra hugs and kisses from me.

Thank you, my Frenchie friends. Words coming from doggie lovers mean SO much more. Doing ok. Bullies seem to know and life just moves on for them.
Kind regards to my old and new friends.....Carolyn

Thanks Samia and Joycegil. It's been 4 months and I still look for my old man to be laying on the front porch when I come home each day.
Samia: I was visited by Ripley a couple of weeks ago. I knew he would come. He came to me in a dream....a very real dream. He was young, healthy and his eyes were clear. We shared a few hugs and he smiled...that big Poodle smile that he was so famous for. I know he is in a good place and it comforts me to know how happy he is.......it is very special when they let us know all is well.....

I just read all the threads regarding your beautiful Ripley. I can't begin to imagine what that day...and the following months were like. I'm so sorry for your loss, I'm sure he was very special.
Dearest regards,
