I was wondering if allergies troubles are common with Frenchies. Athlon has some allergies on his skin and it is based on food I believe. He ate horse meat for months and it solved the problem. Now he eats cooked beef and no problem so far. He had commercial dog food once during a travel and he got some allergies again.

Allergies have made living with Figo pretty tough. We are pretty sure that right now he is at least allergic to beef (apparently beef, milk products, and wheat are the most common dog allergies). The food allergies gave him terrible skin problems which take ages to heal. I have my suspicions that he also suffers from pollen allergy (like his owner) and perhaps will take him top a doggie dermatologist one day to be sure.

Madison has allergies & gets allergy shots weekly. He is on medication as needed for them.
Katie has allergies as well, but hers are manifested by itching & skin issues. Madisons itching is under control, but he has more ear infections & nasal problems from his allergies.

Scott: Athlon's allergies were pretty bad too, especially the skin troubles. He even couldn't walk well on stones because the skin under his paws was too sensible. I saw a doggie dermatologist who told me to completely change his food (hence the horse meat) and he also had to take a bath every 3 days with some special medication. If you want the name of them, I believe I still have them. After several months his allergie finally stopped and I could even change his food and feed him beef now :)

Pattie: I am glad you can control Madison's allergie. Do you give him yourself the allergy shots weekly?

Madison does not like his shot & we have to put a cat muzzle on him when we give it. I usually hold him & my husband gives him the shot. Afterward we give him a treat. He looks forward to the treat.

Ferris appears to have no allergies but Abby is severely allergic to bee stings. When she was a pup she thought it amusing to jump and snap at them. Her face swelled up so badly you could not even recognize her. She looked like a sharpei. I have emergency meds here at the house but I think she finally has learned to stay away from them. We also remove the flowers from some of our ground cover in the garden....this helps keep the bees away.

I know it's been a while since your post about food alergies, but I was wondering how it was going? My Frenchie is 10 months old and has had skin problems and ear problems due to food alergies (we think). The vet has started her on a hypoalergenic diet. It's only been a couple of days, so we still have a ways to go to see if it solves the problem.

I don't know if this is on topic for you BUT ... my Lola was allergic to the cleaning solution I used on the floor (Swiffer wet-jet). I guess I'm just saying, keep in mind that your detergents, cleaning solvents, etc, could also be part of the problem. Someone recently mentioned that it turned out their dog was/is allergic to dust mites - that sucks. Diet is always a great place to start - but don't forget about everything else in your house.

Good Luck!!

I searched the web trying to find a site with good information about food allergies. I was hoping to find one that had info from a veterinarian but didn't find one. Here is a site that has general information:
http://www.brood-va.org/CanineHealth/foodallergies.html

I hope this is somewhat helpful. Food allergies are frustrating because your vet cannot know exactly what is causing the problem and can only go through a process of elimination. Let us know how your pup does...and I hope your vet is able to nail it down soon. Regards, Carolyn

Elle continues to have allergy problems, primarily manifested with skin and ear problems. She has been on a limited ingredient diet for over a month now of white fish and potatoes, but no luck. A trip to the dermatologies is scheduled for next week. It's a major expense (about $1,200 in all), but it will be well worth it to find out what Elle may be allergic to more quickly than trying the elimination approach.

manja has no allergies that i am aware of...
He has these little bumps though (about 2 on his forehead and one behind an ear) that are just like little raised balled patches. Theyre not big (about as big as a lentil) and he doesnt scratch them and they dont look red, just normal skin colour. They've been there for quite a long time now. Has anyone else seen these???
