View Full Version : Sudden Refusal of BARF Chicken

I have been feeding Gigi the B.A.R.F raw diet for several months with great success. My first ordered was a variety package which included one package each of lamb, chicken, beef and combo (includes all the meats). She liked lamb best, beef alone seemed a little too rich but all was inhaled. Next order I chose the chicken and the combo (since the lamb meat was listed as hearts and livers (I was told the heart is considered muscle meat and the lamb available was not up to standards at the time).
My new problem is that Gigi will refuse the chicken completely, will smell it and not take one bite. If I give Combo she eats like the piggie she is. If I add a small amount of chicken to the combo she will eat. I am totally baffled by this. She was eating the chicken just fine before she had a relapse of pneumonia last month. Could she think that because she became ill when the last thing she ate before the illness was chicken that chicken made her sick?
Can anyone add some light to this situation, I have alot of BARF Chicken in the freezer.

Deb,
Dari used to eat the lamb and then all of a sudden she decided that she did not like it.Perhaps Gigi has just had a change of heart.
Perhaps as you said, she equates the chicken with being sick.Who knows how thier minds work.. But she will eat it ,if it is mixed with the other meat?
That is what I would do for the time being. And then in a month or two, offer it to her again.

Deb, I have no clue about the food/eating issue ... sorry!
I just had to write because I don't remember you having an avatar or photo before and your Gigi is BEAUTIFUL!!! She is really gorgeous! I mean, I love Lola to death and think she's totally cute, but I think that my own brindle Gigi is just strikingly good looking -- but don't tell them I said that ;) !

Martina,
I just today figured out how to get my avatar on my threads. Thank you for the compliment, in my eye she is the most beautiful creature on the planet. I added another photo of her lounging on the arm of my sofa like a cat which shows off her lovely tiger stripes, take a look at that. These are very recent pics. I am still trying to get the one of both my babies in there. My other love is a 2 1/2 year old Skye Terrier. He is the one everyone ooohs' and aaahs' over because he has very long hair and siamese cat type markings.

Yes Fran, We laugh at those ears everyday. They will both look at me with those hugh ears and piercing stares like I have the answer to all the secerets of the universe. There is nothing like a dog to make you feel important. My cat always looked at me like I was a total idiot. Bless her little soul, gone for some years now.
BTW, Gigi will eat some of the chicken if I don't put too much in with the Combo food. I will just hold off on too much of it for a while. Strange creatures.

Deb...is Gizmo a Briard? Haven't seen many Briards and I have never seen a white one. Years and years ago I was working for my brother (our vet) and a client came in with a light brown Briard puppy. I thought this was one of one of the cutest puppies I had ever seen! I loved the big ears then....and love them more now! Carolyn

Carolyn,
Gizmo is a Skye Terrier. They look very much like a Briard but are a dwarf breed terrier (name is after the island of Skye from the Scottish Highlands). His legs are only about six inches long but very thick like an English bulldog, he stands 12" high to the withers. His color is considered cream but he is very light with ears and muzzle of grey. I have trimmed the fur from around his eyes for comfort, most have the hair falling completely over the eyes. The fur at his withers measures 14", he is a handsome thing with a loving heart, a large jaw and big teeth for killing badgers. He is the first dog I "rescued" from someone with problems caring for too many pups.
Thanks for asking, I love talking about my babies.

Deb...I forgot all about the Skye Terriers. Gizmo is very cute. It's all about ears in your house! Carolyn

Deb
Avra is on raw diet for 4 years and i have noticed that at the first year that she started on raw, when she would eat something that made her sick she would refuse to eat it for months.
