Well, let me take a moment to say 'Welcome' -- now that I've added my two cents into "Gary's Fray" ...

Tell us more about yourself and your dogs - if you've got any. I've got three now: Gigi, brindle 1yr - Lola, pied 1yr - Tigger, reverse brindle 4mo. I'm just so busily exhausted these days - and lovin' it!!

 Man, Gary, you are crackin' me UP  ... and look at those exclamation points! At least no one will ever say "Gary who??"

Since I haven't seen it mentioned, I did want to say that Heidi is REALLY cute! (See - 3 sentences, 2 exclamation points). I think I remember you mentioning being about to get another ... not tryin' to put words in your mouth ;), but my short term memory ain't the best. How long did (if you did) say you were gonna wait? Same gender?

I have 2 chihuahas that are 1 year old. The male is Tiki, he's black with a white chin and he is 3.14 lbs. Lola is fawn with black sabling and is 3.12 lbs. My family and I researched the breed for over 2 years before we got them and they are wonderful! We just started to research frenchies when I found this forum. This forum seems very informative and the people seemed nice. But after I read some of the threads on male vs. female, I don't know if a frenchie might be too big/aggressive for our little chis. What I've read about the breed is that they are sweet natured and layed back(book). We originally thought a female would be better, because Tiki will try to hump Lola even though they were both spayed/neutered before they were 6 months old and if a frenchie were to try that, he would crush her  . But it seems (from another thread I read) that females are generally more aggressive, and even though Lola is'nt even 4 pounds, she's a dominant female(she is really friendly toward people & animals but she is BOSS, even the big dogs bow to her-standard poodle-F-greyhound type mutt-F-brittany spaniel-M) Anyway, if anyone woud give their advise it would be appreciated. Thanks P.S.-All your frechies are beautiful. I especially liked the pics of Bait fishing!

Hi TikiLola,
there is a breeder friend of mine that has Chi's and frenchies; sorry to say NOT a good combination.

The Frenchie play style is so rough (sherman tanking, I like to call it) that when (I will get to that ) they did play, the Chi's would get hurt..

One of the Chi's decided that it did not like one of the Frenchies; it was not pretty. Now, they are seperated at all times.

There are several of both breeds at my dogpark. The little dogs tend to get into the bigger dogs faces.. Some tolerate it; most get annoyed.
My MAJOR concern would be just that Frenchies are SO rough when they play. Wrestling and rolling around..Can a small dog like yours take that??

Hi TikiLola, welcome! Yo quiero taco bell is the only thing I know about chihuahas :D Maybe meeting some French bulldogs at some dog parks would be a good idea to see how they get along?

First off, thanks for replying :) There are no dog parks near here :( and I have never seen a French Bulldog in person. Before we got our chi's we tried to go to a dog show, but we had to leave after about 5 minutes because I had a really bad asthma attack--My aunt has 2 bulldogs and there is no way we can let them play with the chis, they are way too rough. They are also about 70 lbs. and when we visit, they like to knock you over-they are like a tank and steamroller all in one ;) we always leave there with bruises :o  We were under the impression that Frechies were more layed backed than they actually are. At 18-29lbs. I thought that all we'd have to worry about was the frenchie sitting on the chi but apparently not. They seem to be little steamrollers instead of big ones and much more active. My aunts bulldogs are about 8 years old and she said she'd like frenchies next, so I guess I'll have to get my fill of that smile when she does :o and maybe over time they'll get along and I'll be able to get my own :) Anyway, thanks for the advice(I asked, did'nt I?) If it's o.k. I'd like to stay on this forum even if I can't get a Frenchie baby?

My personal opinion is French bulldogs are "calm" dogs but I had a boxer previously which is a breed known to be "hyper" ;)
I never saw Athlon playing with another French bulldog so I don't know if he plays rough, but he's a sporty dog. Before he had his spine problem (and surgery), he could jum very high and I used to find him sleeping on tables :D
If it's o.k. I'd like to stay on this forum even if I can't get a Frenchie baby?
Of course! :)

Olly

PS: I used to have asthma with dogs as well. This is why I owned poodles first (asthma free dogs!) and a boxer (short hair). With all the French bulldogs I met, no asthma too :)

Dari's best friend is a Boxer (there is a picture of her with Curtis in the gallery). She does play "rough".Not aggressive, but wrestling and that kind of body contact play..In fact ,I really prefer her to play with BIG dogs.

Lesly had posted a while back about how people see/hear Frenchies play and do not understand the style.what they see/hear they interpret as aggression, when in reality it is just so much noise.

Yesterday at the dogpark, a 10 month old Frenchie ,Louie and a year old Pug dragged each other around by the face  .If you did not understand puppy play, wouldn't you think they were killing each other? They were LOVING it. When Gus (the pug) left, Louis was screaming to follow.

Please stay TikiLola and share our Frenchies with us :D

My one thought as I read your post was: If you have your heart set on a frenchie, maybe an older, less active retired (breeding?) dog would work. Then, of course, you have a different set of health issues. But breeders do look for homes for retired studs and dams. Over at www.frenchbulldogrescue.org, I know that they have a couple of retired dogs listed. Just a thought.

Thanks for everyones input. I don't think I'll be getting a frenchie anytime soon :( We were mainly worried about the frenchie accidentally hurting our chis, but it also is'nt fair if our chis antagonized the frenchie! I guess I'll just have to wait until I'm on my own, then I'll have my frenchie or frenchies appicon maybe my own rescue. In the mean time,I'm going to research the breed until I know everything there is to know about them!----I know almost exactly the rough play you guys are talking about-my aunt's english bulldogs sometimes play like they are going to kill each other. They can go at it for a really long time and trash the house in the process.-Tiki and Lola will actually play with each other similar(very mouthy) but it only lasts a few seconds, but if anyone sees them they think they are vicious  They do'nt believe it when I tell them they are just playing! I just can't imagine if Tiki or Lola played like that with a frenchie- It woul be funny if it was'nt so scarey. PS Thanks for letting me stay fiestaicon and enjoy your French bully babies info, stories and pictures. I'll post pics of my little babies as soon as I figure out how

I think you just made a wise decision. I have to agree that Chi's are just too fragile (I love Chi's btw). We have friends that have Italian Greyhounds. They came to visit one day and brought one of their dogs....I would NOT let my Frenchies near the dog. These Frenchies may be only 20-30 pounds but they are solid muscle and slam into anything that happens to be in their way! They sometimes have no manners when it comes to play time...it's all about them having fun and sometimes there is not stopping them. Carolyn

how do you not expect us to take your comments so personally when you are clearly attacking us pesonally? gary, we love that you here. but, maybe, could you take a more respectful role? you are clearly mad at us, for thinking you are disrespectul. but, if so many of us think that way, then maybe you could try to discuss things with us differently. i think you are a smart person and am in no way devaluing your opinions. just maybe maybe maybe, could you respect our opinions? as i feel that the general consensus is that we value you yours. you have said many things that i feel, and have made many valuable points. but, the way in which you have said them has seemed to de-value my/others on the boards opinions. anyway....

your dog is the cutest. i love frenchies. even though i am new to the breed, it is so awesome to see everyones dogs. i am amazed at how different they all look. beautiful!

Hi TikiLola & welcome! Sorry I didn't catch your real name (D'oh!)

My friends that have Adora's sister also have a rescue Chi who is 2 yrs old. He loves his baby Frenchie sister, even though she is a spitfire and about 2x's his weight. I think their Chi is quite a bit bigger than your 2 (he's 7 lbs). I would definately worry that the Frenchie bulldozer play style might overwhelm your dogs :(

Adora is 6 months old, 22 lbs, and she is better playing with dogs her same size or bigger. Some of the smaller dogs get frightened of her snorting and rushing them - but on the other hand, there is a tiny little Yorkie boy (3 lbs?) that LOVES Adora. I think the individual dog's personality has a lot to do with it.

I agree with Martina's suggestion that an older Frenchie might be better with small dogs.

Best of luck no matter what you decide. Please stick around and join in the conversations - we're usually a barrell of laughs! :D

Welcome!

I know a Dutch breeder who has both. The Chi's are the boss over the French Bulldogs. There are no problems.

You can look on her site: http://www.******.net (Moderated ;) Mieke will send you the link, Roosje)

Thanks for the sites :) It's nice to know they can get along. The reason I thought frenchies and chis were compatible is I saw a couple breeder websites that had both, but the two that respoded to my e-mails said they keep their dogs kenneled and never allow them out together. I'm just not willing to take a chance.---There is this chihauhua web site that I've been lurking on and one of it's members lost her chi recently, because her retriever accidentally fell on him when they were chasing a ball :(
