Hello, everyone I've been looking around all all the beautiful pictures of your babies. I have been doing reading on Frenchies and have talked to several breeders. I thought this may be a good place to bring my question. I have a male Tibetan Spaniel, Dominic, he's sweetest happiest boy. I want to eventually add another puppy to the household, but want the experience to be rewarding for Dominic, the new puppy and myself. I only want to bring in an animal and give it the best possible life and a fair chance at growing up into a great companion. First of all would a French bulldog puppy be compatable with Dominic. In case you aren't familiar with tibbies, Dom will be no more than 15 pounds full grown and stand about 10 inches high. Would a larger dog be a threat to his safety. My next question would be what gender would be more appropriate? Dominic is the least dominant of his littermates, however they were both female, so would a female be a better match. Dom is neutered by the way, he was neutered at three months.
Another issue I'm questioning is when would be a good time to possibly bring in a new puppy, a frenchie if they are compatible. Dom is still a puppy himself, he will be five months old on the 7th of next month. I know now may not be the best time to add another addition to the family, but I want to do plenty of planning and research before making my decision and allow myself enough time to find the right breeder, like I did with Dominic. I appreciate any helpful advice and /or answers any of you can give. Thanks.

Hi, and welcome to Bulldogworld :)

I think dogs of most breeds can get along - with temperaments being somewhat more important than breed. Little dogs really don't seem to know that they are little, and they rarely let that stand in their way. With that said, I probably wouldn't combine a toy breed with something like a boxer.

As for genders, as a general rule, dogs of opposite sexes have the best chance of getting along together. Personalities play a large part in any equation, of course, but opposites is usually the surest bet.

On age, well I think it is best to let the first one grow up and be through all the puppy and adolescent phases before adding a second pup. Adolescents especially can benefit from your undivided attention, and it gives you the opportunity to get your training well cemented before your attention is diverted to housetraining a puppy again. No harm in starting to look around for responsible breeders though. Finding any puppy can take quite a while, and Frenchies appear to be harder than most (responsible breeders that is, not BYBs and puppy mills). Good luck in your search :)

Welcome Powers, I agree with everything that gmacleod said. I would wait awhile for the first one to mature abit before getting another dog. :)

Welcome!!

Between my two French Bulldogs is 2 1/2 years and is goes very good!
I also think the oldest should be an adult. For Frenchies it takes more time, because it takes them more time to become an adult.

Thanks everyone for your helpful advice. I believe I have joined the ranks of the frenchie enthusiasts. I look forward to the day when I bring home a frenchie pup of my own, for now however I'm going to enjoy Dom's puppyhood, its already flying by so quickly, he's growing into a beautiful tibbie and is a sweetheart. In the meantime I'm sure that this board will help me with my research and preparation for making a Frenchie a part of my family. :)
