Hey all...

first off, i want to say thanks!! im really in debt to this great site, i've learned so much and really appreciate everyone's input...

ok, let me tell you guys/gals my situation...

My wife and I are Dog lovers that live in Los Angeles and have been
interested in french bulldogs for as long as i can remember... We have
been doing our homework in regards to owning a frenchy and...well,
were ready to do this !!

we've been patently looking for a frenchie for the past few months, and i'd love to buy a frenchie locally, from a loving, very reputable breeder in my area...im staying FAR away from import's and trying to do my best as far screening breeders go and being a responsible frenchie lover and soon owner, i hope ! ;)

anyway, i've lost track on how many web sites i've looked at...but i found this little cream female, which is exactly what we're looking for on www.xxxxx.com (url. edited by moderator) she's the little cream female on the upper right of the page. does anyone know of this breeder ? i spoke to Tina the other day and she seemed very nice. i guess i just dont like the idea of shipping this poor little puppy on plan trip out here to LA, i mean, they must get so scared being all alone on plane...the puppy is being held for me right now and i have to make a decision very soon.

anyway, please give me some advice and what would you do in my situation. you found a puppy that looks very promising, via the internet but have never seen it or the breeders facilities ? would you buy the dog on blind faith...or wait for a local breeder in area to have pups ?

please help !!

thanks much,
Lino & Rosanna

Personally, I wouldn't touch that breeder with a bargepole. I don't know them, of course but from what is on their website they look very clearly like a backyard breeder breeding dogs purely for profit (as opposed to producing correct and healthy dogs) to me.

Some of the things that are wrong here:

There is no mention of health screening for genetically inheritable disorders
There is no mention of showing
There is no mention of their breeding stock
There are no photos except of cute little puppies (for sale, of course)
The puppies are for sale at 5 and 6 weeks of age - no responsible breeder is going to let their pups go so young
Look at their health "guarantee" if your pup gets sick, even due to a genetic problem, NONE of the bills will be paid by the breeder
The guarantee only covers replacement for congenital (ie. existing at birth) defects, not genetically inheritable ones - not surprising really, if no testing is being done on the parents
The "guarantee" excludes a number of genetically inheritable conditions (thyroid, demodectic mange) as "environmental"
The "breeder" is willing to sell a puppy to someone they have not met

I could go on :( but it wouldn't be pretty.

Personally, I just would not buy a puppy from the internet. In 90% of cases, you're going to be dealing with a puppy mill or a backyard breeder. IMO the person you have found is almost certainly one of these.

When I got Dari, her breeder was in Kentucky; I am in NY.We spoke for hours; he asked for references ,as did I.Someone he knew and trusted came to my home to make sure I was a home he wanted for his pup.

Now ,when he is contacted by a prospective owner in NY, I go to interview the person to make sure that the home is a forever home.

I DOUBT the people you are looking at would do anything past asking for a credit card..

If I wanted to, I could go to Bill's home at any time.. Could you go to these people??Doubt it..My Dari spent the first 4 weeks of her life in the breeder's bedroom; then the next 10 weeks in the kitchen. These pups are not even in the house..

I got xrays and a report about her spine signed by Dr Keller , the head of OFA.They probably do not even know who he is..

Sorry to beat a dead horse.

If the breeder is not near you , there are ways to get around that. Many breeders have trusted people to interview. You can see pups/dogs that live near you to get an idea of the breeding..

PLEASE DO NOT BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE... This would only be furthuring the worst form of animal abuse...Puppymilling.

After looking at this website again and more closely; I believe that these pups may not even be thiers..There are NO mention of sire or dam..They are probably imports..And I would not be surprised if these people are brokers.

The puppies are not particularly up to breed standard. Not one has the noseroll that Frenchie pups of quality have. They all seem to have little bone (skinny legs). And LONG snouts....

Lino,
Shipping a pup is NOT the worst case scenario..The airlines have special very limited shipping; like Delta Dash that is much safer than cargo..

This is allowed all year as opposed to cargo which is restricted by temperature. The pup is last on the plane and first off. In fact you pick the pup up at the same place people get off, not the cargo area.

If you restrict yourself to a geographic area to purchase your pup;it will greatly diminish the chances of finding one..

What about going to pick up the pup yourself??Or,like Dari's breeder, having the breeder bring it to you??

fran

ps.. thank you for your strenght and courage in not taking that pup.

Hey Fran,

thanks for all the info... i'd have no problem traveling out of state to pick up a pup, or if the breeder was able to deliver the pup, that would be awesome !!

the search continues...

Thanks,
