Dog safe plants?

I'm getting ready to re-do our back yard and would like to know what plants *are* safe around dogs/cats?

I have read lots of things about what plants are poisonous, but have no clue which are the best plants to have around pets.

Our soil here (Southern California) is clay and doesn't drain well. I'm not opposed to using large planters though.

If anyone has suggestions - I'd love to hear them!
