Why does it seem that BMF are more available some places than others? Why do pieds crop up more at some locations?

Can a breeder actually breed for a color?

Two days ago I spent a long time (over an hour) on the phone with one of the most respected Frenchie color authorities..She breeds ch dogs and has a genetics degree from college.

Let's start with why there seem to be more BMF in Europe than North America.Real simple answer;nothing to do with "breeding for them."The breed standard in that part of the world does NOT allow for creme .So the only colors that are allowed and bred are brindle and bmf (I am not sure about pied.)Indeed, from what she had been told; if a creme was born, it was culled. So it is not a matter of "breeding " for a specific color. That is the color that the dogs are..

The only definite in color here according to the many breeders that I have spoken to over the years; If you breed two cremes or two fawns, you will not get a brindle.

Breeding frenchies for color is as they say, the luck of the draw.
Breeding Frenchies should be FIRST AND FOREMOST for health and temperment;then for color.

A "breeder" going for color first is NOT breeding for health and temperment. They are breeding for MONEY.

This is what I have gleaned over the 5 years I have been researching this breed and trying to learn.

To me, color would not be that important, As you say health is by far the most important. I did not know that about the cremes. (strange) I do know there seem to be a lot more of the brindles than the creme or the pied. I had noticed that. So would that be to say that brindles are the preferred breed for a standard? Though I think all colors are very cute. To me personality and health is what makes them the wonderful breed they are.

Interesting topic franp.

That's interesting. Tells ya how much I know about frenchies. Oh well, I'm learning..lol. That makes sense in that the cremes are prone to skin problems. I know very well that the fawn pugs have more skin problems than the black does. Like I said. Interesting topic.

i do agree that yes , the health of the dog is the most important thing to strive for in breeding. also temperment. but everyone on here , if they were truly being honest with theirselves, must admit, that color WAS a factor when choosing their pup. when we decided we were ready to take on the lifetime commitment of raising "another child" we both (quinn and i ) sat down together and began the search. first we checked breeders in our state. no puppies and long waiting lists. then we searched the internet. one site (wont mention it) had 40 pages of puppies. as we browsed the pics, we came across a black masked fawn and we both knew THAT was the one out of all the pups that "did it for us" ;). so we found a site that listed breeders and that is how we found rocky. i think all frenchies are beautiful and i just want to smooch on those faces !!!! thankfully rocky loves being smooched on . but i do admit that color was a factor in choosing our babies. and we all have pups of different colors and we all love them . and i am so lucky to have found this site where others here have them and love them and are willing to share their advice and experiences with everyone. appicon appicon

Well I have one of each. Ollie is the fawn with black mask, and Frenchie is a black brindle. I can't honestly say I am more partial to either one as far as color. Both are precious. I also like the pied. Guess I just like them all..

Quinnybear; I am being honest; color was NOT a factor. I took what the breeder had.
I was more concerned with WHO I got my dog from than what color it was.

No, I do not think that Brindles are the preferred for the Standard. It really IMO, depends on where you are and who the judge is.Throw into the equation, who the breeder is.

I love all colors of Frenchies!!! When I first decided to get one, I wanted a white. Well, we found Lenny!! I would say end of story but it isn't! Black brindles are my favorite. Sweetie is so cute though! I think that she has the most beautiful white coat and her little fawn dot at the base of her tail just adds to her beauty!!

I must say color was a factor for me when I chose Adora. I think ALL Frenchies are positively perfect but I am partial to a few colors. ;)

For my future Frenchie (not happening any time soon) I would like a red pied or fawn pied. That said, I'll be sure to find a reputable breeder next time and just hold out for the color I prefer.

well franp that really was pretty interesting. you learn something new everyday. ;) i am partial to a healthy dog, but an oddball of the breed could certainly catch my eye. i guess i'm one of those people who don't look for the "perfect" example of the breed. as long as i love them and don't plan to breed em, its fine with me.

Like I said in another post...I had my heart set on a BFM while I was searching for my first. I ended up with Abby who is blk/wh and Ferris who is brindle/wh because that was what was available from our breeder. Like everyone...I love all colors but I will say...I am very glad I ended up with the darker color. We all love what we get, don't we? Carolyn
