My 5 month old frenchie, Bleu, has 2 different colored eyes. One dark brown and one blue. How common is this? He is white with only a couple of brindle spots. He was born in SF CA, but both parents are Russian. I will post a photo as soon as I can size one down. Are there any other odd eyes out there? I cant go out in public without being stopped by everyone we walk by.

I do not know about frenchies. But I do know it is quite common in many other breeds, especially dachshunds. Though fairly uncommon, it is also possible for them to have 2 blue eyes.

What a handsome guy! I have not seen the 2 different colored eyes in Frenchies before.
Does he hear normally? Sorry - I hope that doesn't come across badly! I just know that in cats it often affects their hearing and am curious about it in dogs?

Lesly,
I was going to ask the same thing.
Many white frenchies are deaf ; many breeds like Great Danes with blue eyes are deaf.
Funny thing; Deaf Frenchies are in great demand..
Have you had his hearing tested?

Yes, he can hear but no I havent had him tested. I would be sad to think he couldnt hear. The vet only squeeked a toy behind him and he turned around. He barks(snorts) at noises I can barely hear. I know in white cats the ear connected to the blue eye is most likely deaf. It was the first question I asked the breeder. He hears but he sometimes looks in a diferent direction from where my voice is coming from. Soooo maybe the one ear is deaf. My vet said I would have to go to a specialist to get a true hearing test. We in California have UC Davis, I'll keep you posted. I was wondering what caused a blue eye gene to pop up this way. He was the pick of the litter by the stud but changed his mind. I asked AKC if I could register him like this and they said yes only in white or light coats. I wonder if there is a breeder trying for 2 blue eyes with healthy hearing.
I will post a gallery of photos as soon as I can. He's a crack up.

If you see her again by chance please direct the owner to this website. This is fun.

[QUOTE=joycegil]I wonder if there is a breeder trying for 2 blue eyes with healthy hearing.
First, I forgot to say hi and welcome.
I would HOPE that NO breeder is looking to breed a blue eyed Frenchie; Why do I say this?
Breed standard first off is dark eyes only. And many times a blue eyed dog is either deaf or partially deaf. So to intentionally breed something that MAY have a congenital defect IMO is not responsible. Nor is breeding against breed standard.
That being said; I know a number of people with "deafies" .They are wonderful dogs. As loving as hearing Frenchies. In fact , there is even a list for deaf dogs..From what I understand deafies are real characters. And sought after..

Hi Fran
I agree, I was questioning why I was paying for show quality when I didn't think I could show him. And while yes he is cute, he still was odd to the standard. I too thought breed standard was dark eye only as well but was surprised at the AKC response I got where it is acceptable in white frenchies only. I cannot imagine why anyone would want to risk having a deaf dog or would request one, seems unfair to the dog.
Bleu lives for the squeek of a toy. Thanks for your knowledgable reply.

Joyce,
You can register it. That does not mean you can show it. All registering with the AKC means is that the parents are Frenchies. NO guarantee of quality. No registry guarantees anything.
The standard says NO mouse (whatever the heck that color is) and no solid black.
You have your dog and you love him.If you paid for a show dog and you want to go back to the people that sold him to you, that is your choice to get money back.
He is cute and I am sure a sweet boy. And after all , in the end, they are our companions..

I should have added that ; sure you could TRY and show him; but I doubt that any judge would put him up.
If I am coming off sarcastic, please excuse me.Blue might be perfect (conformationally ) in every way.But from what I have seen, as a pet owner with more than a passing interest in showing; even a flashy pied has trouble finishing.
A bi-colored white frenchie? A long shot....
But he is cute.

Go to the AKC site and read the breed standard. Then see if your dog meets the standard.
Go to handling class and learn how to show your dog.
If your dog has been spayed or neutered then you can not show it.It must be intact.
It depends on the area that you live in as to what is the best color. Right now the judges seem to prefer fawn. The winners bitch at the Nationals was fawn but the winner was a brindle. One of the hardest to finish is a flashy pied.
it really depends on the judge and the dog.

Was your dog sold to you as a show dog??
Usually , you buy a dog as a show or pet. If you don;t know then I must assume that your dog is a pet quality.
Talk to the breeder and have your dog evaluated.
Pet quality just means that the dog may be too long or the ears are not set properly or the eyes are not the right shape etc....or the color is not right or the pigment is not full. There are a number of reasons a dog is pet quality as well as the physical body not being correct. As in the legs too long/short.The body too big/small etc..

Joyce....just wanted to say "hello" and welcome to this site. Looks like you have already gotten some information here which is a great thing. I enjoyed the picture of your pup...what a cutie.
I have two Frenchies....Abby (3 1/2 yrs) and Ferris (2 yrs). They are everything I could have ever wanted in a dog and then some. They are the light of my life. They are quite opposite in disposition and really compliment each other.
Looking forward to more stories about your pup. :D

Hi Joyce,
I am fairly new to the forum as well. I just saw the picture of Bleu and I wanted to say what amazing(and cute) looking Frenchie. I can totally understand why people on the street stop you. You must be very proud.
Welcome.
