Question: Since my dog is already 1 year old, I was wondering if it is okay for him to be fed once a day? Have any of you guys did this way of feeding or did you maintain the twice a day feeding?

Also if you are feeding once a day, do you feed them the same amount of food that the dog food label states? I know that most of the Dog food companies recommend more dog food to be fed but just roughly is that what you guys feed your dogs when they are already 1 year old?

I read that 20-25 lbs dogs need to be fed at least 2 cups a day. Is that what you guys feed also?<<< of course this doesn't count the RAW DIET FEEDERS coz I want to know the KIBBLE feeders...

What is the best way of feeding adult dogs? twice a day or once a day?

Once a day works well for my non-Frenchie dog - I give him 1 1/4 cups of food in the morning, but he usually doesn't eat it then, he eats it around noon and then I give him 1 1/4 cups again at night and he is STILL chubby! BTW - he weighs 60 lbs and is a very active dog!

I think 2 cups for a 20-25 lb dog would probably be too much. I guess it would depend on the actual food though. Adora eats Canidae, which is for all ages, and gets 1 1/4 cup per day (she weighs 18 lbs) and is getting pudgy. So...cutting back to 1 cup per day!

Also depends on how many/what kind of treats you give them during the day...

It's all very confusing to me too!

I got my frenchie from previous owners who were strict about keeping a once-a-day schedule, but I didn't see any harm in splitting that meal into 2 for morning and evening feeding. She's 19.5 pounds, not too athletic, and I give her ample snacks, so i just split the 1 cup of food into 1/2 cup morning, 1/2 cup evening. I don't see any reason to restrict food to once-a-day unless your schedule demands otherwise.

I fullly agree with the two meals daily rountine. My Frenchie does much better with her food split in two meals and the Skye Terrier who is the big brother is much happier eating in the morning and evening. I did try the once daily feeding after being admonished by the vet but it just did not work as well for us, neither did that vet.

I feed twice a day too - and exactly for the bile reason. My two probably get more food bulk-wise than many of yours, but we're on a high-fiber diet for Gigi, so the food is lower calorie. Not to mention my two are still really active. The vet actually told me that I could start feeding Lola more yesterday! ... Fran, she really is thin ;)! Which I think is really funny because Gigi is a pudge-muffin or snausage as one of my friends calls her. Just goes to show that different dogs have different needs.

Listen, I feed Dari twice a day, cause I would not want to eat once a day.And who could sit at the table with those faces looking up at me???

Before I switched to raw,Ms D was on the thin side. Then she got , shall we say, pleasantly plump?? I was so excited that she was eating, that I STUFFED her!

Now she is back to her svelte 22-23 pounds.
Martina, tell your friend that Frenchies are not whippets :) , they are Rubens models!!And we LOVE them that way.

I found this article on the net that explains which type of feeding is better...

I have to disagree also. I have tried both with my pugs, and they seem much more settled and happier with eating twice a day. Once in the morning and again in the evening. They tended to get grumpy otherwise  and that makes me grumpy..lol..Not a good thing..lol
