Hi All,

I'm new to the thread and considered a new and proud owner of a Frenchie.... or is it a Boston Terrier???

How do I know if my pup is a Frenchie or a Boston Terrier? The person who sold it to me said she's a Frenchie but a lot of people say she looks like a Boston Terrier. She's about 5 months old now and has white and black patches...

I've searched the web to find the differences but to no avail... so hope you seasoned Frechie owners can help me out here...

Thanks in advance!

Wel, first where did you buy your dog? And what is the registration??

Is it AKC?UKC APR?

These are 2 distinct breeds; but it is my understanding that Bostons were bred from Frenchies using (the now extinct) white terrier.

Bostons are lighter in bone; have a longer snout and have a dome shaped skull. The skull on a Frenchie between the ears should be FLAT..Also from what I understand and have observed, Bostons have much more tail than Frenchies..

Carolyn is on the West Coast; she has had Bostons for many years; she is much more knowlegdeable.

Frenchies are generally a heavier dog in bone and weight.. Many people do mistake Frenchie for Bostons and the reverse..

I just look at the picture; and from that picture, she LOOKS like a Frenchie to me!

Did you see the parents? Can you post some more pictures of her standing ; her whole body?? The shape of her head and her ear set are very Frenchie.

What does everyone else think??

Hi Franp,

Thanks for the reply. My lil pup is not registered anywhere as I'm actually in Shanghai, China. I don't think the AKC is active here at all.

Unfortunately, I never saw the parents but the dog breeder assures me that she's a Frenchie throughbred.... I'll try to post some more pictures of the whole body...

Thanks for your input here...!

Hi again Franp,

I've just uploaded 2 more pictures of my little baby. By the way - how did you see the pictures? When I click on it, the picture box says "pending approval"...

Hi & welcome to the group! Your pup definately looks like a purebred Frenchie to me - and is a cutie! Is Malibu her name? If so - I LOVE IT! :D

Adora's littermate Asia has very similar markings and they get asked *all the time* if she is a Boston Terrier. I'll put up a good picture of her in my gallery.

Boston Terriers are noticably taller, leaner and more finely boned as Fran said - there is a painting of both breeds together somewhere....oh yes...here it is: http://www.antiquemapsandprints.com/SCANSB/B-0438.jpg

yup! looks like a Frenchie to me too... just a little pin headed that is all... my Lil Paris was a pin head too but slowly he's head got bigger. I was told that it would've been much bigger if I had not had him neutered at an earlier age...

The heads are a little smaller if neutered. But it has been my observation that the Russians (no I am not beening negatively biased) have smaller heads than the American lines..

Living in NYC, there seem to be allot more Frenchies per square mile; I have the opportunity to see and compare.

I would bet that if we put several dogs side by side and tried to figure out which was neutered early or late; we would be hard pressed to tell; all other things being equal..

Heredity and genes have an enourmous amount to do with head size etc.

Good Evening from Shanghai all,

Thanks for all the replies and the welcomes! It's assuring to know that I have the right dog... HAH!

Yeah, a lot of people told me that my lil Malibu is a Frenchie but the colour is that of a Boston Terrier.

Not sure about your dogs but lil Malibu here is such an actor. She's a "lady" when guests are in the house but such a "tomboy" where there's none! Next step is house training... almost had her house trained but had to leave for 3 weeks for a business trip. Left her at the store for dog-sitting and now I'm back to square one...

I read somewhere that Frenchies are suited for apartment life... is that true in your opinions?

hello and welcome. your pup is adorable and looks like a frenchie to me as well. you may want to try a search for pied frenchies, you will see many more that look similar to yours...our Biggie is considered black/brindle pied as it appears your little girl may be...

Frenchies are perfect for apartment living but they do need lots of exercise and play time. These guys are very difficult to potty train....they are very stubborn dogs but with diligent training you should be ok. Carolyn
