Hi, this is my first post to this forum... and I know there are a few posts like it around (i've spent a cheeky few ours of my workday reading the great posts on here). But I have a collection of specific questions to ask...

I will be collecting my little boy when he turns 8 weeks, in about a month's time. I live in a two storey house, with a fenced back garden (and very steep wooden stairs).

Q1) I was hoping to feed him a raw meat diet... I am gluten intolerant myself and I'm aware of the rubbish that goes into commercial dog food. is a raw meat diet a good idea at 8 weeks?

Q2) We're intending on keeping our pup mainly confined to the ground floor of our house - the stairs are steep and slippery. Do frenchies actually manage to climb stairs? Ours are so high and grip-less I'm afraid he'll try coming upstairs to get to our bedroom at night, and possibly fall off or hurt himself trying to get up or down, or just get trapped half way up...

Q3) I don't like the idea of crating the pup. we have hard-wood floors on the ground floor, and we have installed a doggie door that goes on to the back garden. Do you guys think if we keep putting him outside, he'll eventually get it? without the use of pee pads or cages?

Q4) Electrical wire/ cable chewing. How pup-safe should I go? I work part-time as a composer in my home studio, and it's a cable-nightmare. I'd hate to shut my baby out on the days I work from home... any strategies on making such areas safe for pups to hang out in? My partner also works part-time at home, as an engineer, on a different computer! At the moment I'm imagining having to gaff-tape everything down ridiculously. Any advice/shared experiences with this would be welcome!

Q5) We have hedgehogs that live in our garden (UK). Also loads of stray cats visit our garden to sun themselves and preen - sometimes we hear them fighting at night. Do you think an 8 week old pup would be at any danger with night-time doggie-door access? I.e., would you lock him in at night, if you knew there were hedgehogs and cats out there and you couldn't supervise cos you are asleep on the first floor?

I think that's about it. My partner and I have been waiting so long to get a pup, we're very excited! we just don't want to make any mistakes or put him in any danger, right?!

Sorry for the long-ass post.
x

ok, after thinking about it for while, I'm leaning towards making a puppy pen that incorporates the doggy door w/outside access. Maybe that way I might be able to sleep through the night...?

Sorry. So many questions. I'll keep reading these forums.
