keeping your frenchie cool in the summer

I live in the northeast and we got our dog from the FBRN in the winter, this is our first summer with him and I have noticed that even on days that it is in the 70's he still seems to be really hot, he pants a lot during his walk and then lays on the tile in our kitchen for a while after. I try to take him out in the morning or in the evening but it doesn't seem to help, I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for keeping him cooler during the walk. Thanks.

Water is good for helping to keep dogs cool. Without sweat glands, dogs really rely on panting and cooling over the tongue and through the nose. Short nosed breeds, of course, don't get much cooling via the nose as the cavity is too small. But cool water in the mouth will still help a lot (doesn't need to be swallowed), as can water on the body. For really rapid cooling, a cold wet towel is good (though not that practical on a walk).

It can also be worth letting a vet check the dog over though - in case he has some other physical problem that is making a difference here.

I would wet him down in a kiddie pool before you walk, then water him also. I would not be walking very far if he is doing that much panting. Remember Frenchies do not need tons of exercise. We also walk in the evening.

They sell cool packs that can go around their neck also. I have also seen cooling little jackets at dog shows.

whole bunch of sites with them and the cooling vests also. There are also some on ebay. I'm getting Lovey one for our walks around the block, it gets so dang hot and humid down here!

I bought a little plastic kiddie pool at Toys R Us - I figure when he's really hot - a nice dunk will feel great and help improve that core temp!
