Hello, my name is Rich, and I actually watch after my brother and sister-in-law's two Frenchies while they're at work. Kea, the oldest is 14 months old, while her brother, Max, is 6 months. Max will be neutered this Friday and will also have a hernia operation. They have been tons of fun and have provided endless hours of entertainment. Kea, the female is very independent while the male is a bit of a kling-on. I've enjoyed many of the posts I've read, recognizing many of the traits some of your dogs have in both Kea and Max. Just a wonderful board with tons of info.

[QUOTE=Roosje]Welcome to this board :) I am looking forward to hearing about your adventures with Kea and Max.

What sad news about Max, let us know how the operation went Friday. Is he in much pain? poor little guy :(

Thank you. He's actually doing well, as the hernia is not as pronounced as it was when he first came into the home. Still, he has to have it sewn up. We have a good vet who has performed this operation several times, but there are always concerns with frenchies. Max will be a bit mad (Mad Max) on the morning of the operation, he'll have to miss his morning feeding, as he's a big eater. Again, thanks for the welcome to a great board.

Hi Rich I am new too, actually just joined today and I agree this seems like a great place and it's great for me since I'm a first time owner of the breed :). Looking forward to hearing more from everyone, welcome :).

My best to Max, love the name.

Judy

Welcome, Judy. Great to have you on board. I took Max in this morning and as soon as we hit the check-in area he started to shake. One of the technicians came out and picked him up and he seemed to calm down. Just waiting now for them to call and let us know how everything went.

Hello, all. Well, I picked up Max yesterday, and he's doing fine. They told me that the operation went great. What shocked me though was the fact that the neutering along with the hernia op only took 25 minutes. Seems really short. He was really in a serious daze when I picked him up and he slept on the way home. My brother had just returned home from work, so he's been watching over him. Sheesh, no food or water for four hours after he came home. I'll call over there today to see if he's been able to hold his food down. Max's sister, Kea, was up and around the next morning after she was spade. When Max left the Vet the workers all said "bye Stitch." I guess he looks like that little alien in the Disney cartoon, "Lilo & Stitch", lol. Anyway, thanks for the reading my posts, as I'm enjoying reading all of your's and have gone back and read many from last year. Very informative.

Thanks for the update Rich, I'm so glad Max is alright bc whenever they are put under it's a risk. Give him a kiss from me :D.

Judy

LoL! My brother called this morning to tell me that Max was cleaning up his morning breakfast and was holding it down with no problem. Your right though, whenever they're under it is a "risk". That's what my main concern was, not the operation itself. One thing though, the breeder told my brother and sister-in-law that Max's mom had torn the umbilcal loose causing the hernia. The vet told me that all breeders say this, and more than likely the problem is genetic. Not sure if he's right, no reason to not believe him. I must say though, the breeder is great and we had a great experience with her with Max's older sister. Anyway, I'm just happy it's all over and looking forward when I can take him back to the park for his daily walk.

It is amazing how fast these dogs recover!Be careful;do not let him do too much. His seemingly great feeling can make you think he is ok.Remeber he has had surgery.

As for the hernia; many times it is the VET"s fault. They use a metal clamp on the umbilicus instead of a plastic one.The metal is so heavy that it causes a hernia.

Frenchies are c-sectioned.The mother is ASLEEP and does not clean her own babies. So the mom could not have caused the hernia.. Sorry to ruin the vet's theory.....

Glad your big-boy is doing so well! As my mother always says, "any procedure has risk," so it's always great afterwards when everyone is healthy and well :).

Thanks for the advice. We'll keep him as calm as possible. I was shocked at how inexpensive the operation was. Heck, if a human had had the same procedure it would have cost thousands. The hernia op, neutering, an ID chip, and blood panel cost was a mere $264.00. Interesting about how Vets often cause the hernia. I didn't have a clue.
