Hello frenchie people. I am new here at the board although I have been reading it for a week or so. I have been looking for a puppy for about 6 months or so.......seems like longer! There doesnt seem to be any breeders in my area, well... one but no pups! Anyone know of any in my area? I can go to Philadelphia, Delaware, New Jersey and other closer parts of PA. Washington DC is fairly close also.I did find one person selling pups in New Jersey, but they import . Is this really a bad thing? I have read so much for and against. How do you decide whats best???!! I have other dogs, an Austrailian shepard and a dachsund mix. I love the frenchie tho and yearn for a puppy!! :o) :)

Hi, please change the color of your printing; it is very hard to read.

If you want my opinion about imports; yes it is a VERY bad thing. The dogs are taken from thier Moms too young. The people who sell dogs over the internet do not care who they sell to.They do not ask for references. All they want is your money.

You can not go to see where the dogs are reared or born. These people can say and tell you what ever you want to hear. If a problem arises; they are thousands of miles away.Too far for you to have any support or recourse.

Go to www.infodog.com.See where the dog shows are and when.Go to meet the breeders. And do not limit the area that you will buy from. I live in NY and the breeder I got my dog from is in Kentucky.

Make sure that the people you talk to are people that show thier dogs. These are people that breed to better the breed. Not breed just to breed. Make sure that they do health testing. And that they either neuter/spay before you get your pup or sell on a limited registration.

Oh, I forgot to add, most of the imports do not meet breed standard when they mature. Most are much bigger than the American dogs. And thier temperment is much more terrier like.

These are NOT the same dogs that we have here. They are very different. Most of the dogs we get in rescue are imports.

Welcome to this forum! This is a very special breed you are researching and you are wise to ask many questions....they are a bit of a surprise even if you have done your homework and think you know all about them. I mean that in a good way. :p I have owned Bostons and St Poodles for years and when we got our first Frenchie...I thought I kinda knew what we were in for. I was pleasantly surprised to find this breed to be one of the most entertaining, stubborn, enthusiastic and loveable of dogs. The ARE different, make no mistake! I am owned by Abby who is blk/white and 3 1/2 yrs old and Ferris who is brindle/white and 2 yrs old. They are total opposite in disposition (thank goodness)....Abby is the alpha female, very active, independent and oftentimes berserk. Ferris, on the other hand, is laid-back and more of a snuggler. I love and appreciate both personalities.

Fran gives good advice about import dogs. Many of them are great dogs..but when you see so many them turned into rescue....you have to know something is wrong. Keep us posted on your quest.... Regards, Carolyn

Yes, welcome. These are very different dogs than what you have now.

I have had hounds and Rotties and mixed breeds. But never anything like frenchies. These are BIG dogs in little bodies.Dominant dogs who want all of our attention and love. Dogs who are soft and loveable at one minute; turn around and they are tough the next.Frenchies will always keep you on your toes.

This is the breed that I will stick with for the rest of my life. I have a 5 year old brindle girl; Dari. The light of my life.

As Carolyn mentioned, I am very active with FrenchBulldog rescue. Please go to our site and read about import dogs. Also go to www.frogdog.org.There is allot of information that will help you to discern if you are dealing with a backyard breeder; puppymiller, importer or reputable breeder. These people are getting slicker every day.

Information about the dogs is there as well. What to expect about health ;behavior etc. And a list of breeders.

And I couldn't have expressed my thoughts about these bullies any better! appicon They have more personality than many people that I meet. ;) I never would have imagined such a dog could fascinate me and capture my heart as they do. Carolyn
