I'm new to the forum and a proud master of a loving six month old brindle. I feed him Nutro Max puppy food. For a small dog he has large stool piles when he potties approximately 3-4 times a day, the stool samples are healthy. I buy premium dog food to reduce, I would hate to see what would be the case if I bought cheap food. Please help, my wife calls me "pooper scooper man". Also he loves the dog food.

Hi! My dog Winston could poop 4-5 times a day and it's been like that since I got him at the age of 4 months! I have gone between raw (Nature's Variety) and kibble (Orijen; California Naturals) but he still puts out a lot of stool, some formed and some not.

He was diagnosed with small intestine bacterial overgrown (SIBO), a condition which causes him not to absorb nutrients that easily. I have to be careful about the carb and fat content of his food, hence the reason I go between top kibble and raw.

I think some dogs just poop a lot more than others. My previous Frenchie, Walter, didn't poop as much the older he got, but Winston is 3 1/2 years old and he's still going 4 times a day.

I know what you're going through!

Hi there - some dogs do go more than others it's very much an individual thing. If you were feeding him too much dry complete chances are his poo would be soft & as his are normal I wouldn't be concerned, as long as he is ok in himself & not getting fat.

Our Ky goes 3/4 times a day, most of the others go twice but our Merlin only goes once. I find when I take some of them to a show they poo more through excitement & it's always softer. I raised my last liter on Nutro & raw meat; I always found their poos to be nice & firm on this food.

I have to agree with you regarding cheap dry complete, this kind of food goes straight through them, the dog doesn't benefit from this kind of food at all & neither will your back!

Best wishes

Perhaps you might try a higher quality food? Nutro Max isn't exactly premium quality... Sure, it's much better than grocery store brancd, but it's a long (LONG) way from near the top of the quality tree also. It contains a lot of grain, which isn't that easily digestible (and not that great quality grain either). Quite possibly you would have better results from a food with higher meat content, and fewer (or no) grains.

Thanks for the responses, any recommendations on a better feed than the nutro max? He eats good and his stool samples are healthy, just too much! The job of pooper scooper man is killing me! For a six month old, he's got the energy of a doberman! I love this dog he's my daily entertainment! Again thanks for any and all advice.

Well, there are quite a few better quality foods around. Some that come to mind include wellness, nature's variety, orijen... But there are many more. Here's a site with lots of information on the contents of over 1500 different dog foods, along with ratings and reviews. It's a useful resource for starting to consider different options that are around. Generally speaking, anything 4* or better is probably a decent option. www.dogfoodanalysis.com/dog_food_reviews
