Do you leave your dog's collar on at all times?

I am nervous to leave little Adora with her collar on while I'm not home since I've heard horror stories of collar accidents. She's kept in the master bathroom with a baby gate & there's not much trouble she could get in to in there. I think she sleeps all day anyhow :) But, if God forbid, she somehow escapes or there is an emergency, I'd like for her to have ID on.

I leave Beckham's collar on all the time since he's able to slip his collar easily so I know he's ok, but there is no way Adora's collar would fit over her Frenchie head! :)

Please help me out, to collar or not to collar when home alone, that is the question

Thanks,
Lesley

Are your dogs microchipped?

As for collars; Dari does not wear one at home; it worries me that it could get caught on something.

When she walks, she wears a harness.

I am a fanatic about microchipping; it is the ONLY foolproof method of identification that there is.

A couple of years ago two show dogs were stolen from the yard of a breeder in Texas; one belonging to Dari's breeder. The only reason that (months later) the bitch was returned was because she was microchipped. The people who had her could not deny that she was not thiers.

Our dogs are very high on the list of dogs to be stolen. Microchips are a must.

Yep, both are microchipped. I feel the same way you do about it :)

Adora has a tattoo as well.

Poor Beckham has 3 different tags on his collar (name tag, AKC CAR & dog license) & Adora already has 2 tags (name & AKC CAR) and her 3rd is on it's way! They are very well identified dogs, when they have their collars on :D

Is there an advantage to using a harness vs. collar for Frenchies?

Thanks,
Lesley

P.S. - by the way, Fran, I never told you how cool I think Dari's name is! How cute!!

When Dari was young , she pulled really badly on her leash and the collar impinged on a nerve in her neck. It was so bad that she was lame in her right front leg.

She was on crate rest for 2 weeks and medication. My human dr realized that the collar was the cause of the nerve impingment. So, I put her in a harness and the problem has never re occured. appicon

Oh my gosh! Luckily so far Adora doesn't pull, she's just the opposite - but I will definately watch out for that. Poor Dari! I'm glad she got better and it hasn't happened again!

Fran - You say Dari doesn't wear a collar at home, but them you talk about a harness. Does she wear the harness at all times? Do you just put a collar with tags on when you're going out? Or do you only use a harness (and have the tags on the harness) and only put it on when you go out?

My two have collars on all the time. I am, however, thinking about using harnesses for walking - reflective ones. They are great 'heel'-ers, but I still worry that something unexpected could happen and they (or I) could pull too hard. Also, part of the reason that I got frenchies is because I abhor the heat (wanted a dog who matched), and find that as it gets warmer, I walk at dusk or later - which is why the reflective is so important.

Thanks!

Dari only wears a harness when she goes out.As soon as we get home; the harness comes off.She never wears a collar.

I have heard too many horror stories about collars/harness getting caught on things, so she goes bare at home.

I did not think I talked about Dari's name here; so you took me off guard
Her full name is Darielle.Translated from the Hebrew it means Gift of God. And she is that; my gift.
She came to me 3 weeks before my Mother died. Her presence was a healing force to my whole family. I truly believe that is why it was so "easy" (relatively speaking) for me to find her.If you consider 2 weeks NON stop on the computer and the phone easy. And I mean nonstop. :o But it was worth every minute.
By the way , her name rhymes with Harry.
