our mooi unfortunately is quite a drooler. he sleeps with us but we cover our comforter with an extra sheet so our bedding is protected (somewhat) from doggie dirt. his drool stains on the sheet are reddish in colour. is this normal or an indication of some health issue? he is fed raw diet (no fruit or veg, just meat, organs and bones). is the colour of saliva a sign of some deficiency?
otherwise, he seems healthy and full of beans.
thanks, kasia

I think that one is probably a question for a vet... I don't think I've heard of red saliva (without obvious cause, such as bleeding gums) before. If it were his hair where he licks being discoloured, that would be more common.
How long is it taking for the sheet to be discoloured? I'm imagining reddish stains daily here. Is that the case, or are we talking about something happening over time? It's easier to think of benign reasons for the latter.

Hi Kasia - as a drooler his jowls will be constantly wet so bacteria & yeast will be growing there, this is probably why your bed cover is stained. Wash & dry his jowls before you go to bed, it may help. I bet you don't notice it during the day unless he lies in one place for a long time .
My lot sleep with me too, our Merlin is a drooler he leave a small reddish stains on the cover too, I found using towels soaks the stains up more than an ordinary cover. I sewed two bath towels together which nearly covers the whole bed, it's ideal.
I would be concerned if I was removing saliva from his mouth with a tissue & it was tinged with blood. Some frenchies get Epulis but these are more common in older dogs, these are little growths that grow along the gum line, from time to time they can bleed but I would have imagined you have checked his mouth anyway.
But I really don't think you have anything to worry about with Mooi
Best wishes

thanks to both you. as it turns out, i'll be going to the vet tomorrow for a minor injury mooi sustained at daycare today, so i will talk to him about this as well. his gums and tongue look normal, and his saliva when wiped directly is a standard clear(ish) colour. but will let you know.

Are the stains dark red? I see Mooi is a pied like Dutchie. Dutchie will leave a small dark red spot after drooling once in a while and his comes from his fur around his mouth. He has seasonal allergies and will have a dark red discoloration under his eyes and chin, especially after playing in which he produces more drool. I try to keep it clean with baby wipes but if not, he can leave a spot.

yes, they are fairly dark, and he is prone to seasonal allergies. but the reddish drool has now mostly disappeared - it could have been connected to the ragweed allergies that he's just getting over. in any case, the issue seems to have gone away on its own. thanks for all your replies.
