I just bought the Dremel Minimite and tried it out for the first time yesterday and I will never go back to clipping Bouji's nails again!! All of her little toe nails are now short, smooth and rounded. Bouji didn't seem to mind the Dremel, just opened her eyes from her nap, yawned, and just laid there until I was finished. Then went back to sleep. She usually hides when she sees me go for the clippers so this was a nice welcome.

Does anyone else grind their dog's nails? Any tips?
I read one article on the internet about not holding the grinder to the nail for more than 3 seconds since it can get hot and burn.

I was wondering about those types of do-it-yourself tools. I heard of one out called Pedi Paws which from the commercial looked like a Dremmel. I was just wondering how much noise it makes because if it was loud then I'm not sure Dutchie would like it.

I've seen the commercials also and wondered if they would really work. Good to have some feedback. Baxter is not crazy about getting his nails trimmed with the clippers. I'll definitely give it a try. Thanks for sharing.

Well I found the Dremel after looking for reviews on the Pedi Paws. I read a lot of not so good reviews on Pedi Paws-- but it looks so great! A lot of people were recommending the Dremel instead so I googled it-- I don't think it was actually made for grinding dog nails but I guess some people who show their dogs started using it and the word got out. There are several models and I went with the Mini since I figured it would be less conspicuous as I sneak up on Bouji-- ha ha. Plus it was less expensive.

The noise level is probably equivalent to an electric toothbrush and it does vibrate so you have to hold the nail at the base. I was concerned about the noise level too since Bouji does not like loud electronic sounds-- blenders, hair dryers, and vacuums are no nos for her. Several attachments come with the tool and I read you shouldn't use the stone tool only the sand paper looking one. BTW, I tried filing my own nails with it, but they came out a little ragged-- lol.

I found a great solution that works terrific on my frenchie. It was a dremel golf kit. I found it for sale in a hardware store for under $15. This is the model:

Then I bought a cheap bit that I figured would work good for nails. It did! My only complaint is that it uses AA bateries instead of recharables.

I just recently bought the Pedi Paws for Piper's nails. The way I would have to clip her nails with nail clippers would be with her standing on the floor and me kneeling over her, contorting my body around her. I just recently had a pretty extensive knee surgery so this is no longer an option and Piper won't tolerate the clippers any other way. So I took a chance on the Pedi Paws. And it worked GREAT! appicon She sits on my lap and lets me grind them without a struggle. I was really surprised at the difference in her. It makes a slight whirring noise. Not loud. My only complaint with it is the guard. It's too deep for small dog nails and I've found myself removing it to better grind.

and figured it was worth a try for that. I've been very pleased with the way it works on both Lovey and Tootsie, my Rat Terrier. I, too, found that the guard was a little deep, so I took it off. Neither girl gives me any trouble using it and I like the way it smooths their nails.

My Frenchie, Winston, lets me use the Pedipaw on him, no problem, but I cannot get my pug, Raffi, to let me do his nails. He seems scared of it, even though I followed the instructions and introduced him to it slowly.

Jake hated having his nails clipped. I mean seriously went nuts when he even saw the clippers...i'd have to have help holding him to just to get his nails done. I bought the pedi paw and love it. It's not that loud, Jake will tolerate it. I wouldn't say he like it but he doesn't try to run away or bite while I'm doing it. The only thing I find is that you have to do it quite frequently to keep the nails short otherwise you're spending forever trying to file them down. Actually the last 2 time I used the clippers to clip the very end and then just filed them down the rest of the way for safety and smoothness. Amazingly now Jake will let me use the clippers, but I do find the grinder much safer. What someone else said about the guard is true. I never thought about removing it...will have to try that.
