We went to the vet the other day (another topic/long story) and he said that our frenchie has shallow hip sockets. is this a normal trait? I have done a search online and very few things come up one article said that it is normal for french bulldogs to have shallow sockets. TIA

Hi Tigerlilly, personally, I've never come across that, or read about it! It's new to me! What are shallow hip sockets? Sorry can't be much help, but am kind of curious myself! Is your Frenchie in any pain or discomfort? How did he diagnose her?

Shallow sockets is where the leg bone just slides out of the socket. He was able to just pop her leg out with no problem at all. She does not seem to be in any pain, she runs around and plays just like normal. She is only 9 months old so i am worried what might happen later.

Hi Tia - do you not mean Patellar Luxation (slipping kneecap) ? A vet will be able to pop it in & out when the grove is to shallow. There are 4 grades, 1 being near normal, the 4th the worst, I've had dog with a slipping kneecap, he was grade 1.

I hope it's not patellar luxation. One of ours had it and had the surgery and is completely normal now. Sounds similar to patellar luxation, but shallow hip sockets might be a different story. It's great to hear she isn't in any pain. Did the vet advise you of what could happen later on?

It is her hip. The vet just said we need to keep an eye on it. Hopefully there is not a problem later on. There is little on the internet when I do a search but some articles say that bulldogs and french bulldogs have shallower sockets than other dogs but I can't find enough info to say if it is true or not. I have used this vet for years and I like him but I kinda think he does not know much about french bulldogs.

Were x-rays taken that you can send in to the OFA for confirmation? There is an excellent frenchie radiologist there who will give you a difinitive diagnoses and discuss options with you.

The only hip problem I have had was with one of my rottweilers Kane, he had Hip Dysplasia. He was about 14mths when I noticed his gait was different he would swing his hips from side to side when he walked & he seemed to go down on his back end when he stood any length of time. My vet suspected HD this was confirmed by x-ray. Kane was kept on painkillers/anti-inflammatory tablets & glucosamine/chondroitin tablets which helped.
