It seems to me that most people here who feed raw have overcome the flatulence problem. I feed a super high fiber kibble to my two because of Gigi's intestinal problems - prescribed by the vet. Of course Gigi has no problem, but Lola has horrific wake-you-from-the-dead-gas  a result. But, since it's the only side-effect (otherwise healthy, well-formed bms), I just suffer through  ...

Yes she has always had bad gas. And I mean BAD. We feed her royal canin---recommended when we got her as a puppy. What is this raw food you talk about? Is it pricey?

I have fed a multitude of different things to my dogs, but have now settled on Canidae, they add some acidopholus and other enzymes to help with digestion. It seems to be working.
I think Royal Canin has either wheat or corn, I'd recommend you try to find a food that does not contain either of these ingredients.

:o You might want to try a fish based diet. I am a dog trainer and I recommend First Mate which is a herring based diet. It's done wonders for my clients.

Raw food or BARF ; bones and raw food is a way to feed. It is based on feeding dogs as they ate in the wild.
Dogs are not meant to eat grain; look in thier mouth, they have no molars. Molars are grinding teeth.dogs have tearing teeth..Teeth to eat meat..
Dr Ian Billinghurst wrote a book called "Give your dog a bone" about raw feeding; using raw meet and bones; NO grain. commercial dog food has grain; it is cheap and fills the dog and causes gas..
Many people make thier own BARF diet. I use Bravo, a prepared raw diet. There is Omas, Natures variety among others..
Go to www.bravorawdiet.com to start to learn. Get the book "The Ultimate Diet" It is very easy to read and understand raw feeding.
My dog did NOT eat when I feed her dog food. And her bm was soft and smelly. On raw, she does not have gas, her stool is firm and she loves her food. The vet is thrilled with her health and her look. Her breeder was so pleased he changed all his dogs over.
If you have a holistic pet food store where you live ,go in and talk to the people to start to learn.
Frenchies do NOT have to have gas...

Royal canin is one of the higher quality foods i believe...Biggie is on Canidae as well and it has been working rerallly well for him. If you cannot do the raw diet, I have also heard that dog's w/sensitive stomach's often do better on fish based foods..you may want to try wellness fish and sweet potato...BUT if you are going to switch foods do the changeover gradually..over a few days to a week i would say...

I'm not "sold" on the raw diet yet.... What is the best dry food? I am feeding Mia - Eukanuba Resonse FP which contains primarely fish and potatos.
Mia doesn't have gas often, but when she does she turns and looks back at me - as if I did it..... :D

The topic of food is a constant issue for me. Vuitton and Fitch are very fussy eaters. The vet recommended that I feed one of the "premium" kibbles and supplement it with some meat. From reading information on the Net, it seems as if Science Diet and Eukanuba are not the best foods and I read that Royal Canin Puppy is one of the better ones. The boys eat Royal Canin but love their chicken necks. RC however does give them bad gas and when I looked at the ingredients there is a lot of corn (maize). The ingredients do vary from country to country I think.
As I am about to switch them into adult food, I was wondering what people thought about Pedigree Advance, RC sensible and Pro Plan. Do these food give frenchies gas problems? Corn is more down the list for these brands.
I have read a lot about BARF but the boys do not eat any pasta/rice or vegetables. I think they will be happy if all I feed them is chicken necks but I know that cannot be good.

In the relatively short time time I've had Adora, I have noticed that both corn and wheat cause her to have major gas. She came to me eating Science Diet and I transitioned her to California Natural Puppy (all this food consists of is Lamb & Rice + vitamins) which is what I feed my other dog since he has food allergies, she does well on it but doesn't seem too excited with the taste, so I'm still experimenting on what to feed her. I may go with Canidae or Merrick - she likes the taste of both, but I don't want to switch her too fast or too often!
Raw food did work wonders on my APBT mix boy, but there are pros and cons to feeding raw. After his latest blood test last week he needs less protein in his diet. Even when I was feeding him raw I fed him California Natural Chicken & Rice Adult as well, which is what he's being returned to now. Some dogs simply do not do well on grains and raw is a great choice but others cannot tolerate the large amount of protein in raw foods.
It's all trial and error it seems!

I have always fed Mia - "Nutro" puppy dry food and she has done well on it. I just switched her two days ago to Eukanuba at my vet's recommendation.... I have heard that Science Diet is almost the worst thing you could feed a dog... I also try to give her fresh (cooked) chicken and raw carrots occasionally. I am still searching....

Wow. Lots to digest here --no pun intended. Well I can tell you that she was recently Science Diet prescription for a bout with diareah. She really liked the canned food and it was turkey and rice. Royal Canin has corn in the puppy one but not so much in the adult kind. I have also noticed that when she was on the prescription food her breath didnt smell as bad. And no gas

Adding a tablespoon of plain natural yoghurt helps to reduce the amount of gas. Been there, done that ;)
