hi all
It is me again :) I have another question Abby is always running from me I know she probably thinks I am playing but it is hard to catch her she is fast and little. You have to corner her.
Does anyone know when this will stop?

always have a biscuit in your pocket or hand. That is how we trained Ivan to come when he was called. He is soooo food driven. He will do anything for a treat.

Ok but will she eventually come with me offering her a treat?

another thing you might want to try is running in the opposite direction (and look like your having a great time!) She'll run after you and then you can praise her for following.
This works particularly well outdoors and off leash.
Roosje is right that if you chase abbey you'll make it worse because she'll think its the most fantastic game and keep doing it.
Frenchies are very headstrong though. Manja tends to not come immediately when called. He sort of stares at me for a few seconds and decides whether its in his best interests or not first!

Treat Vs Correction.
Besides giving a treat when the dog obeys, you can correct the beahaviour when it doesn't, for control in the distance I've used a long thin line attached to the collar, it's no supposed to pull the dog to you, but to give them a litle correction to remember them they must come. Then treat, playing or food are the best as you probably pet it a lot (don't we all?). Always use different voice tones, one for the comand, one for praising (you should repeat the command and say, good dog...) and one for the correction. Never calling several times is important, call once, twice to make sure it heard you, chasing is also very bad, it teaches that they don't have to go to you because it works well the other way around, you go to them.

Nelson

this is what worked with Biggie. I would literally run through the house like a crazy woman so he would chase me rather then me chasing him. to teach him how to come when called, we used a really really long lead as suggested by Cafu.
He is a stubborn little guy though and still we are not 100%..he also looks at me like he is debating sometimes if it is in his best interest to come that is when i shake my hand and start pointing at my side toward the ground (kind of like come over here darn it!!) this prompts him pretty quickly..(he expects a treat with the handshaking movement)..
stick with it and be consistant with whatever you try is the best advice i can give..keep us informed :-)

Ok I have tried to walk the other way she follows but not real close because she doesnt want to be caught.
I will try the running in the other direction but I dont see how that is going to help me catch her she wont get close enough.
I will try the treat and see how that works, I dont know about the leash unless I leash her in the house. I have her on a tether outside because I got trired of chasing her though the yard,

ok i have one more trick up my sleeve. This is a little embarassing to put into practice sometimes but try it.
Manja never comes if i give a simple single whistle but if i whistle a tune he comes running full speed and showers me with kisses. Its pretty unbelievable, its as if he's waiting for me to hit the right note or something! it always works for me without fail. Try whistling a tune (make it an interesting one) and if its as fool proof as i think, maddy will come running. let me know if it works.

HI all!!
Well I did what you guys did and when I went to pick up Abby and she started running I would just turn and run and then I would sit on the couch and she followed me and jumped on the couch and then I could catch her.
Looks like that is working for now. Thanks guys!!

i'm gonna throw this out there because i was having problems with lola running away from me when i wanted to pick her up and carry her upstairs (she can jump on my furniture - and coffee tables, she LOVES coffee tables - but she can't climb stairs!). you can imagine that i was getting pretty frustrated. well, over the past two weeks i've changing the position that i carry her in - and i think that may have been the problem.
she has a level 1 luxated/ing patella (so very minor incovenience) and i wondered if the way i was holding her was hurting her. now i carry her with a hand under her chest and one between her back legs and she doesn't run from me at all when i go to pick her up.
but as soon as i get on the stairs, she stiffens and it's like i'm carrying a stuffed doggie. gigi, on the other hand, melts into me when i pick her up and is like a big 'ole sack of potatos! different personalities ...

May I ask how many of you have done formal obiendience training? And kept it up after the classes were over?
That is the only way that I got Dari to come when I called on a consistent basis. No matter where we are.It took MUCH time and effort. And I do it every day to this day.She is 5 years old; every day we have a 2 minute drill where we run thru all the commands.
She gets rewarded for doing them. And when we go to the dogpark; I call and she comes. It was allot of work.No running from her; These dogs are SMART and after a while your dog will figure it out and will not come anymore.
Obiedience training IMO is a must, It makes for a canine good citizen..

I haven't taken Luna to any obedience classes YET, as I am taking the Master Dog Trainer program this summer and need a green dog (as one which is not used to working). In the interum, I have read about different methods of training and used my knowledge to get Luna to a point where she is socially accepted ("sit", "stay", "come", "shake a paw", "speak", "down", "wait" and ringing the bell to go to the bathroom). Well, mostly...we are currently working on toy aggression around other dogs - a tough one to beat - Luna can be quite a bitch ;)

Yeah, we've been working really hard on "Come" for about a month now. They totally are in to it when it's something they want - outside or treats - and much more slow to respond when it's just "practice" or time for me to leave and put them in the kitchen. But, as they say, practice makes perfect!
