In case someone is looking to adopt a Frenchie in the USA, there is a nice site about it at http://www.frenchbulldogrescue.org :)
It is a non profit 501(C)(3) organization.

Ooh! Which boy do you like?

I am obsessed with Vinny from Brooklyn myself. Unfortunately my husband would kill me evilicon if I even thought for 2 seconds about bringing another animal in to this house!

It is a bummer that the Rescue Frenchies are not more spread out in the states but if it was a perfect world there would be no need for the FBRN. Maybe we should start a rescue car train transport like some of the other breed rescues do. :D

FBRN does transport its' rescue dogs when necessary.

And it depends on where a foster home is available as well. Transporting a dog in rescue is a very delicate matter. You are taking a dog that has left its home;many times there are behavioral issues and medical issues.Transporting a healthy dog is not easy under the best of circumstances..Think about some of the dogs on the FBRN site;many have been abused or thrown away.We try to move them around as little as possible.

If you do any research; FBRN probably has one of the most well organized organizations of any breed specific rescue that there is.We have people who are assigned to watch petfinder and sites similar everyday; shelter liasons etc.People in charge of fostering; transporting; the website etc.. A national volunteer co-ordinator; national fund raising events..There are few breed rescues like ours..We are blessed with dedicated people.

Please go to www.frenchbulldogrescue.org and look at the site. Read the stories..Know that at a moments notice, a dog can be pulled from a shelter, bad home etc and fostered until it is ready to be placed; NO MATTER HOW LONG that takes..

I am very proud and honored to be part of FBRN.

Fran, I did not by any means mean to say anything even close to bad about the FBRN, I am on the site at least once a day, have read every inch of the site and have frequent contact with my area rep about everything Frenchie. I think the FBRN is wonderful and encourage people around me to educate themselves by viewing their site and others. I did not know that the FBRN transported any animals at any time (now I do) :o I think for certain circumstances that is great, and also understand that is usually not in the best interest of the Frenchie to do this. To the great people of the FBRN keep up the great work... as usual I will be watching (and waiting with others in my area). appicon

Don't be mad at me Fran! :D

Whitney,

I was NOT mad at you. Just wanted to clarify how FBRN works for people who are not part of it.

Until I became involved, I too, thought moving a dog was as easy as putting it in a car and taking it to another home. Then I got educated.
If I do ANYTHING; it will be to enlighten people what rescue is all about. How hard it is to turn a dog around into a pet. How much work it takes to move a dog.
Indeed Whitney; you did me a great service by allowing me to talk about what it takes to move a dog. Thank you! :)

Fran said "If I do ANYTHING; it will be to enlighten people what rescue is all about. How hard it is to turn a dog around into a pet. How much work it takes to move a dog."

Fran...your shared experiences with FBRN is invaluable. Most of us never consider all that is involved in re-homing these Frenchies. As I continue to read about WHY the dogs are turned over to rescue...I begin to understand. It's all about what is best for the dog and not traumatizing them more than they have already been traumatized. You all at FBRN do good stuff...and educating us is part of it. Carolyn

This was a comment made recently by a FBRN volunteer.....

"We didn't place this many Frenchies in an entire year, let alone have them all in rescue at the same time. We got in 3 more just this weekend. It's never ending!"

Very sad comment about what is happening to our breed. Please visit their site and see all of the sad stories. Donations are really needed! Carolyn

Thank you Carolyn, there have been quite a few dogs taken in to rescue recently. I think the total number of dogs with FBRN right now is 35 or 36, quite a few have had (or will have) expensive medical procedures done.

There are 2 other rescues;Frenchbulldog connection and The FBCARL.

Let me tell you a little about the adoption process ( I am a member of FBRN).We are very fortunate to get over 200 applications for every dog; in the case of a dog like Meli and Lulu , it can be 500.
Families with Frenchie experience are given priority. But ,that being said, we have adopted to families that have not had a frenchie before.
We strive to give the dog the BEST possible home;because we get so many applications we can pick homes that have stay at home owners.Or yards or what ever the particular dog needs.
And so many wonderful people do apply. We do home checks and Vet checks.References too.
All these steps are why FBRN is so successful; rarely does a dog come back.

I wish you all the good luck.Keep in mind that you are probably a wonderful home.As so many people are..Thanfully there are not (yet) that many dogs available.

fran-
thanks for your reply and info on the other rescue organizations! i cant even imagine how many people have sent in applications for those two lil frenchies. FBRN is an amazing organization and I love there website and everything they do. I must have visited the foster roster and adoptable frenchies a million times. Its just so hard to wait and see if "your" family matches with an adoptable frenchie!

Is there anyway to move the process along? Or to know if your application has been reviewed? We are just so excited!

Thanks!

The best thing NOT to do is contact the foster family..There is a committee that goes thru the applications..
An ardous process. They wean them down to several that fit;then they start contacting the prospective families..Then the Vet references ; then the homechecks etc.

The only thing I could suggest is that you might email in a couple of weeks and ask if you are being considered. But that is about it.There is NO way to move the process along. We have a whole procedure that MUST be followed .There are NO exceptions..

Sorry , I can not be more positive..

I want Bugsy! What a cutie and he is the same age as my Bleu. I had worked as a foster for years placing dogs and cats for our Valley Humane Society. I loved it. I had a big house and 5 extra rooms then, I became a pro at drawing blood and giving injections. Now, I am in a smaller home now and my helper (my daughter) went off to college. I felt guilty about buying from a breeder. I tried resue at Xmas time with no luck. But I really want to apply again now that I already have one. I see that Bugsy is from Oakland that is where I bought my dog and futher more Bleu's brother had the same markings as Bugsy, hmmmm...
Anyway, Hooray for the Rescues appicon

Joyce....good for you looking at rescue. Bugsy is a cutie...love those freckles on his ears! However... I see that FBRN recommends that he be placed in a home with no other dogs. Too bad because I know you would be so good for him. Carolyn

Just as an update, there are currently 37 Frenchies in FBRN's care.

A huge thank you to everyone who supports FBRN and rescue.

I only wish that the numbers of Frenchies in rescue was not increasing at such a high rate.

I read Bugsy's profile where she says "Bugsy's inclination upon meeting new dogs is to repeatedly bite at their faces until they play with him or attack him. If the new dog wants to play and can overlook the aggressive introduction then Bugsy will wrestle and play keep-a-way until the other dog passes out."
That is what my dog and the other frenchie do at the dogpark every night. Is the foster home used to frenchies??? I notice the other dogs in the photos and I cant imagine Bugsy confined to a solitary lifestyle. My dog will play for 3 hours straight and yes they bite at each other face and they love to wrestle hard bumping into other dogs and play keep away. They are the Highest energy dogs at the dog park. They fear NO one NO dog. I love fiesty attitude and strong bodies. When I enter the park everyone yells out Bleu! It like going to the Bar Cheers where everyone knows your name. The frenchies are BULLDOGS they can be bully but thats why another 9 month old frenchie is such a perfect match. I would still like to talk to the Foster and be considered. I am in Oakland once a week. Keep me posted. (Like I said, I have years of placement under my belt and I know when it is not a good match but I would like more facts about this little guy, I think he is just being a frenchie and feeling displaced)
Thanks, Joyce

Joyce,
If you have not already filled out an application for Bugsy, then do one!If you have, then do one with an addendum includling everything you just posted.

Information like this is what make an application stand out.Talking about experiences with your own Frenchie and going to the park etc.

Now as to our foster knowing Frenchies; yes.Our foster homes are experienced. If not with Frenchies; then with Flat faced dogs. And when the foster talks about issues (like Bugsy) it comes from (usually) the former owner, or observation.

Unfortunately, when the recommendation has been overridden, the placement has not worked.
(Alison please correct me if I am wrong).

Does anyone know how long frenchies tend to stay on the foster roster for? LULU is the cutest pup ever! We are in love with both her and MELI!

waiting patiently.....and checking my e-mail far too often!

It depends on the dog..

They are on the "Foster Roster" until they are stable (medically & emotionally) and ready to be posted for adoption. I think LuLu had an eye surgery and will probably be posted soon (if I remember correctly). :)

Jessica,
Rescue does not hold it against you if you have not had a Frenchie before.Rescue prefers if you have had a Frenchie..

And yes, primary is that you are a wonderful home..

Jessica: Don't give up on getting a Frenchie from FBRN. They are a great organization and apparently there are more people like us wanting to adopt one of the dogs than we know! I applied several times for different dogs but was never considered and I don't really know why other than never previously owning a Frenchie plus our yard is not fenced. I think it's just a matter of lots of people applying so please don't take it personally. I always looked at it that if it was meant to be, it would be. I know that's really no consolation when your heart is set on one of the dogs but it lessened the disappointment. My husband finally agreed to buying a puppy and we got Bug last February (he'll be eight months old tomorrow). I had sworn I wouldn't go thru the puppy-phase again but when I saw Bug and he saw me, it was like "my baby!" and "Mom!" I always check the FBRN site, like you, too many times thru the day, and I know that I will once again start applying for adoption as we really would like to add to our family. Keep us posted here on the board, ok? There are such nice people to talk to and they have wonderful information and help. Good luck and keep us posted, ok? We are all rooting for you! Jessica,
Don't give up on trying to adopt. I remember the first time we put in our application to adopt a dog. Like you, I was on the FBRN website constantly, checking the status of that little guy. I was heartbroken the day I went on and saw "adoption pending".

I am now aware that there are sometimes hundreds of applications for each dog! I can't imagine how difficult a task it must be to have to weed through hundreds of applicants, all strangers, and select just one! It's not personal. They have to take into account the individual issues, needs, temperament of each dog when selecting a home. While there may be many applicants for a particular dog that would provide a wonderful home, it may not be the best home for THAT dog. A friend of mine recently adopted a cat and had to return it after two days because it didn't work out for them. Thanks to the devoted folks at FBRN who work so hard to avoid this happening to the dogs in their care.

We continued putting in application after application for almost a year...and one dog after another went to some other deserving home. FINALLY, we were selected to adopt our "Baxter". We love our little guy very much and we're happy we didn't give up!

So hang in there and don't be discouraged...

Hello there --

I too applied for Meli and was heartbroken when I saw she had been adopted....I can only imagine how many other people applied for her.

I was determined to rescue a dog for over a year, and searched everywhere for a Frenchy in need....we applied everywhere, visited shelters, contacted rescue organizations, you name it we tried it. After more than a year of unsuccessful searching, my boyfriend and I finally decided that a puppy might be our best option and found Roxy, the love of our lives. :o

I was still upset about not "saving" a rescue, but as our first dog, we really needed something that didn't have too many serious issues. We still rent our apartment, have a cat and do a lot of traveling on the weekends where we are around other animals constantly, so we needed a dog that would be open to new experiences...that can be tough to find with a rescue.

I went through all the emotions -- from feeling guilty that I couldn't handle a dog with more serious behavioral/health problems to feeling sad/frustrated I hadn't been selected for dogs like Meli. But I always took comfort in knowing the dedicated people that run these rescue organizations have a very tough job to do, and they are very good at finding the BEST home for each and every dog. They're not in it to make ME happy -- they are in it to make the DOG happy. And when push comes to shove, that is the most important thing.

My boyfriend and I are eagerly looking forward to the day that we are settled and have a house of our own, and can once again look to rescue a companion for Roxy.

I applaud you for your commitment to rescue -- it can be frustrating, but when you find your perfect little boy/girl it will all be worth it.

Best of luck!

I so wish I could adopt Louis. I think he made a great pal to my Zaboo and they could learn together. But alas, (due to the adoption fee) at this time I can not but I hope in future I am able to adopt one of these beautiful surrendered dogs.
