Hey All!

It's me again, I was just wondering if any of your frenchies ever had allergies that their abdomen had a rash and it is discolored to almost dark. It was my mistake for giving him a commercial dog food, I didn't have any choice because my order didn't arrive on time. I'm hesitating to go to the Vet for now, I just want to gather some response if any of you have ever experienced this. I'm suspecting it could be a food allergy. Any thoughts? Please???

I definitely recommend a trip to the vet ... better safe than sorry!

For all it's worth, Lola developed a bright red itchy rash (not dark) almost immediately after I mopped the floor the first time. She allergic to the Swiffer wet-jet cleaning solution. So now it's vinegar and hot water for us.

I will probably take him to a Holistic Vet. I just really don't know for sure if it's from his reaction to the vaccination a week ago and the side effects are still here OR from merely a food allergy. I've been reading a lot of articles relating to food allergy and none of it seem to match. He hasn't been chewing or licking his paws or hind legs. So I defenitley a bit worried. Will let everyone know ASAP with the results

I have been fighting skin allergies and problems with my 10 month old Frenchie for about 4 months now. She had the same thing you described, dark belly somewhat spotty, in the begining. The vet treated her with an antibiotic and short acting steroid injection. It cleard up in about 4 days. However the problem returned about 2 weeks later but was more red and bumpy than the dark discoloration. The vet then had us start an oral antibiotic and Benedryl treatment. This did not work. We are now trying a limited ingredient food diet of white fish and potatoes, but no luck after 6 weeks. A trip to a Dermatologist for a complete battery of alergy tests is our next thing to try. We have an appointment scheduled for next week. I will keep you posted.

Hello,
I have a 2 1/2 year old French Bulldog named Bugsy that has the same symptoms as yours. He has dark patches on and around his belly, and he also has paw allergies that cause him to lick and bite his paws. I was wondering if you ever found a cure for your problem? Bugsy has been on Antibiotics for about a year now, though his allergies have gotten better they still persist. I have visited many different vets and they all said the only thing we can do is continue to give him antibiotics.

Sincerely,
Chris & Bugsy

Many Frenchies have skin issues and many come into rescue as well with skin issues.

Allot of this is caused by the grain that is in dog food; be it a less expensive brand or one of the premium brands.Dogs are not meant to eat Corn. Corn is a cheap filler that companies use to bulk up thier food. That is why our dogs are gassy and have smelly stool

For the most part dogs with these problems respond to a Raw diet ; called BARF. Raw meat and bones.. There is NO grain.

Have you noticed that the Dr puts your dog on fish and potatoes? NO grain..

Get the book " The Ultimate Diet" You can order it at Amazon..

Go to Dr Jean Dodds website and read her articles. She is the foremost vet in America; she says the major cause of illness in our dogs is the wrong food and over medicating..

We have many dogs that have come thru rescue and thier diets have been changed. These dogs have improved significantly.

I am fairly new to this site and new to frenchies. My dog has similar symptoms and just wondering what everyone else has found out about the bumps. Mimi also has red between her toes but never licks or bites at them. I've been told that after the first heat cycle it goes away?

Ours also has allergies and is constantly licking his paws and shaking his head and itching his ears, we've tried all kinds of food and tried to pinpoint what makes him worse. He also has dark spots on his stomach that we attribute to regular coloration that are spreading has he grows. We better get him checked out ASAP to make sure. Can a normal vet find the answer to what all he could be allergic to? We'll have to see. We also used Swiffer Wet Ones in the past but not in the last month... it could be anything.

RE: Swiffer ... I don't know about the "Wet Ones" version, but I used the Swiffer Wet Jet once and Lola broke out in a rash on her stomach. A long time ago, someone posted about a severe allergic reaction their other (not their frenchie, but the other) dog had to Swiffer products.

RE: Shaking head and scratching ears - are you sure that's not an ear infection?

RE: Spots on stomach ... Lola is pied and has lots and lots of freckles - she even has them on her tummy (and they're soooo cute :p). They are clearly freckles and have stayed in proportion as she's grown.

As has been mentioned, there are several frenchies that have food allergies. I don't know if a vet can do an allergy check - you know, like an allergist does. You might have to go through a lot of trial and error. Good luck!
