Hello,
I have been doing some research for the last few weeks on these adorable dogs. I am wondering if there is anyone from around my area (Southern California) who would be able to help me locate breeders in my area, as well as where I could see some FB's being shown so I can learn more about them and make sure they would be a good fit. My first question is if anyone has experience with Frenchies and cats. I have never owned a dog before, and I do realize Frenchies are not the easiest breed, but I am always willing to learn to make sure I can provide the right home. I currently have two cats and want to make sure first off all that they would be compatible.
I appreciate any help from anyone,
Thank You!

Well I can tell you my expierences so far. Isabella gets along fine with the cats in my house, she just loves to play with them and my two other dogs. I think if the puppy is introduced slowly with supervison you shouldn't have any problems. One of our kittens I had to hand raise this last summer sleeps with all three of our dogs. Animals can get along if it is done right. Nan

Hi Megan and welcome! The very best advice that I can give you is to continue doing your research. I researched this breed for many months and then it took me months later to find Abby, my first Frenchie. This breed is not for everyone and I say this with no insult intended. Firstly, they are expensive and this is because "reputable" breeders invest a lot of money in their breeding stock to make sure they are not passing on any health issues that are genetic. Even if you purchase a pup from a good breeder...you may still get a pup with health issues that can lead to hefty vet bills and you will need to find a vet who is familiar with flat faced breeds. Some other considerations are: Frenchies cannot tolerate extreme temperatures. Because they are flat faced...they can overheat in a matter of minutes and need to be monitored during summer months. They are very stubborn little dogs and can be very difficult to potty train. I must also say...beware of "cheap" Frenchies. Many of these are Russian imports and although the price may seem reasonable...they come with health and sometimes temperament issues. Go to the FBRN website and look at all the dogs turned over to rescue....many of these are either Russian imports or from puppy millers (who can have great looking websites). Any good breeder will grill you extensively before selling a pup. That being said....this breed is wonderful and so very special. I have two and don't know how I ever lived without a Frenchie! As far as cats...if you bring a pup into your home and it is raised with a cat you should be ok. Good luck and keep asking questions! Carolyn

Carolyn pretty much summed it up for you Meghan. As long as you know what you're getting into, you won't be surprised ... and you'll love every minute of it :D

Hi Megan, just wanted to welcome you on the board :)
My French bulldog doesn't like cats at all, but then he was not raised with them.
Carolyn: about the Russian imports, I am glad you are aware of it as with boxer people (based in Canada or the USA) it is not the case... They think getting an European boxer is better than getting an American one... Problem is the "European boxer" they're getting are from Eastern Europe where there are many puppy mills. With a monthly salary of US$60 there, what to expect anyway as by selling a puppy they get more than their annual salary.

Biggie came into our home where we also have 2 resident cats. as already said, you should not see a problem as long as you bring in a puppy. Also it will depend on the cats personalities from what i have seen in our home at least. One of our cats is very social, always has been and she has always been ok with Biggie..our other cat is a bit of a wimpy kitty...he does not come out when anyone aside from my husband and are in the house and was none too psyched when biggie came along however, he has recently begun to come downstairs (you can read my post under the Bullytin section) and biggie gets so darn excited it is really funny he doesnt understand that bowing down and jumping around do NOT mean playtime to cats  we are trying to teach him....

Thank You everyone for your help and warm welcome! Both of my cats are very friendly, so I don't aticipate a problem, but it doesnt hurt to ask.
Anyone is the Southern California area know where I could go take a closer look at some Frenchie's?

Olly...I was not aware of the problem with Boxers. Good grief....millers are everywhere and you make a good point about why the Eastern block is taking advantage.
Megan: You may want to search the web and see if there is a Frenchie get together club in the LA area. Also.....go to dog shows where they will be showing Frenchies and chat with the people there. Good luck in your search. Carolyn

Hi Megan, there is a French Bulldog get together Feb 12 in San Diego - here is the link: http://frenchbulldog.******.com/41/events/?eventId=4040660&action=detail
I have never done anything with this group, but I was thinking about attending. I'd like to see some other Frenchies and see how Mia acts around "her own breed". You should come out if you can.
One thing I remember when I searched for a Frenchie - I was surprised on how strict some of the breeders were. I had to fill out questionnaires about myself and home and even be interviewed by the breeder.... it was like adopting a real baby.... My advise - be leery of breeders who are NOT picky to who they sell a dog to, in fact the more particular they are about you - the better! It just means that they care about the breed and want to make sure their puppy goes to a good home. Be patient and ask a lot of questions - this board seems like a good place to find out about the breed.
Good luck - Ken
