View Full Version : My frenchie won't stop vomiting!!!

I have two french bulldogs (father and son) one aged 5 years and the son aged 3 years. Munchie (the father) used to bring up food or bile roughly once a month, if he was stressed or had eaten too quickly.

For the past three weeks however, he vomits at least 2-3 times a day, even bringing up water as soon as he has drunk it.

I have been to the vet four times in the last 3 weeks, we've had blood tests done, ultrasounds, taken anti-nausea pills and nothing seems to be working.

I even tried soaking his food in warm water so that it is more easily digestible but he will still vomit- though I must admit there has been a decrease in the amount of food in the vomit-it's mostly bile.

I'm starting to get really worried now as he's lost about 1kg in weight also- the weird thing is that his mood is still as lively and playful as it always was.

Please help if this has happened to you or if you have any ideas/suggestions.

Thanks

How is his palate? We have an American bulldog who used to vomit and it was caused by an elongated palate and inflamed tonsils. Good luck!

My Ollie who is now 2 1/2 did the same thing, I use to think it was the food till I tried him on 10 different foods before the raw and with everyone he did the same thing. To make a long story short, he also got winded quickly when playing outside so I had him checked out, he had surgery for an elongated palate and also had infected tonsils. Now you won't know all this till your dog is put under, the palate isn't something you can just check so if he has other symptoms perhaps they should take a look.

I hope you can get to the bottom of it bc throwing up that many times can't be good.

I wish you all the best and welcome to a great forum with great people.

Judy
Hi again.. Well i guess i have to try everything else before putting him through a surgery. As i already told you i am soaking his food now in warm water and he is doing better. For example yesterday he ate without vomiting.. Today he made a small amount of vomit with no undigested food.
Also i have read here to try and raise the height of his food plate a bit.
Are there any more tips that i should try?

One of my vets told me to switch to Intestinal dry food. I am feeding the lamb&rice dry from Eukanuba.

sorry Amy, I didn't read what you wrote, it's funny you mentioned the tonsils as well bc that's what Ollie had and his were really bad!
That's ok Judy! I never dreamed that a dog would have to have it's tonsils removed! Good luck Manchie I hope you can avoid surgery but do keep an open mind if he doesn't improve.

Well for starters there are better foods out there so you may want to take a look at some better quality food and also if it wasn't already suggested, I would feed 3 small meals per day, that may help as well and if it isn't a palate problem it very well may be acid reflux but you will never know if it's his palate unless you talk to your vet about the symptoms and possible have him sedated to check out his palate.

When Ollie had problems he didn't throw up every time he ate and it still was his tonsils and palate so I would say if it keeps up to talk to your vet and come up with a plan bc prolonged vomiting isn't good.

Good luck to you.

Judy

No, you don't hqve too many choices... Of those three, the royal canin is probably the best of them, but it's really not that great. I think there's also a food called Almo Nature there? That's also reasonable, if a bit low in meat content. All those foods are reviewed/rated on the site Imogene linked above.

However, if you're prepared to order food online, then you CAN get top quality brands there. There are several stockists in Germany who will ship Europe-wide, and at reasonable cost too. From www.catscountry.de you can get Canidae or Nature's Variety Prairie (including the Raw Instinct formula - an excellent food). And from www.zooplus.de you can get Timberwolf Organics (there's at least one other doing Timberwolf as well, but the name escapes me just now).

Hi again.
a VET TOLD ME TO TRY rOYAN cANINE SENSIBLE AND I DID. mY BOY STILL VOMITS ONCE EVRY DAY BUT NOT UNDIGEDTED FOOD. tHE COLOUR IS BROWN WITH MUCUS AND IS STICKY.
I TOOK HIM TO ANOTHER VET AND TOLD ME TO TRY ROYAL CANINE INTESTINAL.
HAVE ANY IDEA ABOUT THIS.?
THE PROBLEM IN CYPRUS IS THAT WE DONT HAVE VETS WITH MUCH EXPERIENCE ON THIS SURGERY AND NOBODY MENTIONED ABOUT ELAONGATED PALETE.. WE ONLY HAVE 20 VETS IN DIFFERENT STATES SO I HAVE TO TRY EVERYHTING BEFORE I RISK HIS LIFE AND PUT HIM UNDER SURGERY. I REALLY DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO
THIS IS ALL I CAN GET. I TRY TO BUY KIBBLE ON LINE(U.S.A) BUT I CANT AFFORT THE COST.
I AM WAITING AN EMAIL FROM TIMBERWOLF ALSO.

Hi Manchie, Our Louis is 10 months old now and has always been a little pukey, but just foam or a bit of bile - he is prone to an acid-tummy. I think this is quite a common thing with frenchies, especially when they are young, but when Louis carried on doing it, I started to really panic, thinking that he may have an elongated palette etc. I have spoken to his breeder who has reassured me and we have just been a bit more careful of what we feed him. I have spoken to other frenchie owners whose dogs suffer with an acid tummy - perhaps this is what is causing it.

I am not saying that it is not an elongated palette, it might be, but try not to worry too much - see what you can do with the food before you get upset about operations and things ;) What we try to do with Louis is to feed him later in the day, if we fed him early in the day he could potentially be bringing up bits and pieces all day. So we now give him two meals, one at about 3-4pm and another at about 6-7pm, and this seems to work for him. Some mornings he will bring up a little bit of bile, but when he does that, we just try to get him to eat a tiny amount - enough to line his tummy but not enough to make him sick. It's a delicate balance but it's worth trying all these things.

Good luck!!:)

HI.
I hope i will work things out. I am switching food wright now and i will let u know.
Also u r refering to acid tummy. How can i found out if he has this? Sometimes i can hear his belly going grrrr gggooouu very loud. If this is something i dont know.
Another thing that got me worried is that lately my other frenchie PSYCHO(manchies son) he is keep sniffing manchie around his tonsils. I tried to find out what was there and i can feel a very tiny ball there. Very small thing. If this ring any bell for you's guys.

Thx for helping out. No vet told me to switch foods or even mentioned palate problem so i have to try your opinions first.

Thx
mike
