Unless he wears a harness walking that could potentially be rubbing raw patches under his armpits... then my guess would be sarcoptic mange. Is he itching?

Sarcoptic mange is scabies, btw (aka Nits). It is contagious, including to humans (though the mites would prefer a canine host). And it classically presents first as hairloss in the armpit area, later spreading to the belly. Sometimes you get little pustules. And it is itchy, so the dog can end with secondary infections easily.

You would have to have a vet take a skin scraping to diagnose it though.

Here's a short veterinary article that gives you a bit more information: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?cls=2&cat=1589&articleid=764

Thanks for the quick reply. We have not seen him itch yet. It doesnt seem to bother him one bit.

Well, if he's not itching then my guess is probably way off :) It's probably still worth letting a vet take a look though. At least that can rule things like mange or other infections out.

I did notice this weekend that he is starting to loose hair around his eyes. Is this related? He goes to the vet tomorrow

Penelope had major hair loss about two months ago starting under her arms and working its way to the top of the head and to her sides. We took her to a vet and she was diagnosed with a mange that she got while breast feeding from the mother. It was not hard to treat. We had to dip Penelope in a prescribed med for 4 weeks. It has gone away for now. I guess she will always have the possibility of it coming back. I hope she gets better soon!

joey went to the vet and he has allergies. Plus he is over weight at 30 lbs

I feed him 1 cup of Blue Baffalo in the am and another cup in the evening. Is this too much ? he is 8 months

I'm suspicious of a diagnoses of allergies where there is no itching involved. Did the vet do a skin scraping?

It sounds like alot of food. I was giving Dutchie 3/4 cup in am then in pm and my vet said he was a bit fat so now he gets a full 1/2 cup + 1/2 cup. I'm not familiar with that food but does it come with a feeding chart?

Marcel had the same thing and it was allergies. I gave him antihistamine and it cleared up.

Did you get your antihistamine from your vet? or are they people ones

That is a lot of food. My girl Rella is 28 pnds. If I gave her what she thought she should get she would be 100 pnds. Lol. I give Rella almost quarter of a cup with offal mixed in 2x a day. That keeps her at a fit 28 pnds and she moves well and looks good. But every dog is different. Taz on the other hand get 3/4 with offal 2x a day. He is much more athletic.

Do you mean Blue Buffalo Dog food

http://www.bluebuff.com/products/dogs_puppies.shtml

If yes then technically you are feeding with feeding guidelines (2 1/3 to 3 1/4 cup per day). However there is stuff in that food that you may not want your dog eating, stuff he really doesn't need like barley and oatmeal - Your dog should have a waist line and you should be able to feel his ribs. You also have to match calorie intake with activity level, and take any treats into consideration. It's all about balance and every puppy is individual that is why feeding guidelines are only recommendations.:)

We have one chubby puppy in our play group that gained 10 lbs from 5 to 6 months. By 7 months he was like a mini black beluga whale, but now that he is almost 9 months he is getting all toned and defined. He will probably be 35 lbs before he is finished.:)

It is unlikely you can starve the poor guy to death-experiment and watch his weight and his waistline. Take it down to 3/4 and 3/4 for two weeks; if you dont see a waistline yet, nudge it down some more

I know this guy is just a pup but having older non-Frenchie dogs, I find they are so much more active when we keep their weight in check. Im sure its less stress on the achy joints.

The recs on the Blue Buffalo change right around 30 lbs(for the adult food)I would go with the 30 and under suggestion cause the next grouping sounds too big for a frenchie to me!

Thats going to put you at 1 and 1/2 cups a day if Im reading that correctly

I was following the guidelines on the bag. But we have tonen it down to 1/2 cup in tha am and half in the evening. I did notice that Blue Baffalo has 538 calories per cup..

Joey doesnt look fat to me, he is very muscular. I'll take some good pics this weekend.

My other issue with him is that he has extreme dandruff or dry skin. really bad. What can I do for that. Im already giving him Derm Caps from the vet
