Hi All,

Luna has been vomiting and here is the chronology:

1) vomited once every couple of weeks, sometimes once a week in the first six months; we attributed it to "puppies being puppies" and just eating everything in sight.

2) ate half a drum stick (like the intrument, not the chicken part) and vomited it up 2 days later (we didn't know she had eaten it whole). That was 3 months ago. Vomited multiple times.

3) vomited 4 or 5 times in a row 2 weeks after the drum stick inciden, after she ate scrambled eggs and ham (not normal diet).

4) vomited once 3 weeks ago after dinner, then ate lots of leaves.

5) vomited up once a huge chunk of leaves two weeks ago in the middle of the day.

6) vomited once for no apparent reason last week before breakfast.

7) vomited once in the middle of the night 2 days ago.

8) vomited mulitple times today after breakfast.

I should also note that she froths during excercise and is on the barf diet, which we switch around every couple of weeks. She will be a year old this week.

Before and after she vomits, she frantically sniffs the ground for little bits to eat and tries to gobble the fall leaves. The vomit is very frothy and usually has undigested food in it. She is going to the bathroom and drinking water normally. She is more frantic/restless than lethargic, and doesn't want to be consolled (usually very cuddly and lovey).

What do you suppose this is and should we be seeing the vet sooner than later?

The breeder thinks it might be a hiatal hernia, or as some of the posts here suggest, an elongated palette (although the breeder said it couldn't be that as her breathing is not very "snuffly").

Thanks!
Brooke.

ps. sorry for the lenghthy message - just wanted to get all the info out for the most accurate response.

...one more thing: Luna's breath smells REALLY bad during these episodes, like stinky feet.

Brooke: Wow...that is a lot of vomiting! I think it is great you are keeping such good records...vets really appreciate all the information they can get and you have good information I would think. Yes...I would definitely take your pup in asap. I am not familiar with how they diagnose the hiatal hernia but maybe someone will post who does know. I don't know that elongated palate can be ruled out and worth checking out. Gosh...I sure hope she gets better soon. Wish I could be of more help. I'll see if Pattie has any insights. Carolyn

Brooke:
I do agree with Carolyn that you should take Luna to the vet. It could be elongated palate or it could be an esophageal problem. Make sure you menation the frothy foam to your vet. Best of luck to you & to Luna.

Thank you all for your replies. We went to the vet (finally - a good one!), and he believes that Luna simply has a lot of bacteria in her digestive system (from a bad batch of food or something she ate off the ground). He gave us antacids, put her on a 24 hour fast and gave us some special canned food for upset stomachs. He said if she isn't better in a few days, it could be somthing more serious, but that she looked too "bright" to be deathly ill. Thank goodness!

He did, however, mention that she has mild stenotic nares...has anyone had corrective surgery on their pup? If the the problem is "slight" would it still be advisable to have it corrected?

Thanks again!
Brooke.

Brooke: I am glad to hear you took Luna to a good vet. I hope that your problem is solved. But please do not think that just because your dog "looks" perky that all is well. Madison looked well right before he started vomiting nonstop & had to be rushed to the ER. It took almost a week to diagnose his esophageal problem. I am not trying to scare you, but only to let you know that sometimes vomiting can be no big deal & other times it can be a huge problem. That is why you need your vet involved. Hopefully now with a good vet all will be well for Luna.
Also a note to Roosje about giving potato. When a potato is not cooked to be very soft, it can lodge in the throat fairly easily. Madison had a big problem a few weeks ago with a very small piece of potato getting stuck in his throat. Luckily he is fine, but I will be very careful about his getting potato from now on.
