Milo (our Frenchie) began foaming at the mouth the other day while she was at the park. Needless to say, we became very worried and immediately contacted our vet. The vet determined that she either ate something that was extremely bitter (the foaming/hyper-production of saliva was her body’s way of washing the bitter substance from her mouth) or she overheated. She does not display any other symptoms of any disease. Has anyone had a Frenchie overheat on them? If so, did the Frenchie foam at the mouth?

When Luna excercises heavily, she also foams. I'm always embarrassed, as it looks like she has rabies and I worry about what other owners must think! However, she never shows signs of distress, so I haven't worried about her. I have seen other dog breeds do the same thing (labs, rotties, goldies).

Both Dot and Mo had at one time foam coming out of their mouth, both times in the park, I suspected at the time that it had to do with something they had in their mouths.

Signs of overheating are excessive panting, losing their balance, lying down on the ground trying to cool down, losing consciousness etc. http://www.bulldogworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=173

manja has also foamed at the mouth once and coughing. It was really scary. It just so happened as we were walking past a vet so I took him in for them to have a look. The vet just said that it was probably something he had swallowed and that particularly with this breed because of their restricted airways even the smallest thing can cause a bit of a drama. Anyway manja was fine after that, as if nothing had happened so i felt like a bit of a hypochondriac rushing into the vet like that but at least it gave me peace of mind (and a lighter wallet!!!)
