View Full Version : Will my puppy sleep through the night?

It's been SO long since I've had a puppy around (15 years!) and I am forgetting at what age they will sleep through the night.

Ripley will be 14 weeks next week when we pick him up. I know to take him out every couple of hours the first little while (for housetraining purposes) and he will be cratetrained... but what about through the nights? Do we need to wake up in the night to let him out, or will he go say, 8 hours?

Thanks!

My pups are now 8 months old and I'm trying to remember around what time they were able to make it through the night. It seems like it was right around 4.5 to 5 months old. It's possible it might've been a little sooner than that, but I'd say at least by 5 months. One thing going in our favor is that their metabolism slows during sleep and the need to urinate every couple of hours subsides. I hope for your sake that Ripley can hold it all night very soon!

Hi Allison!

Beckham cried the first two nights in his crate. It was heartbreaking to lay in bed and listen to him, but we just let it pass. I think we took him out once in the middle of the night. We have the crate beside our bed, I recommend you keep yours in the bedroom as well if you can. We've had him for a month now, and while he doesn't particularily like his crate (as in he'll never volunteer to go in!), we'll put him in at bedtime and he'll go right to sleep. During the week he goes to bed at at midnight and I walk him at 7 AM. On the weekend he lets me sleep in until 8. So yes, they can be overnight for 7-8 hours with no problems. He only peed once in his crate, and I think it was on the second night.

During the day while you are home, definitely try and take him out every 2 hours to train him to go potty outside.

JJ is not quit 5 months yet, and from what I recall he's been sleeping through the night since about three months of age.

Fergus peed in his crate the first couple of nights after we got him. For whatever reason, if he sleeps with us in the bed, he can wait 8 hours before having to pee. If he's in his crate, we have to still be diligent to let him out when he rustles around and turns in circles. That can be two or three times in 8 hours. He just turned 5 months old. It may be that he's already figured out how to manipulate us. He seems to realize that when we're really tired, we just let him sleep with us, or if he starts in his crate and then on the second time we take him out, we're so groggy we just put him in the bed. It could be too that we have doted on him so much since he broke his elbow that now we have set up certain expectations for him. Since we are restricting his movement right now until his elbow heals, we end up carrying him everywhere and we're constantly paying attention to him. This has not been good for reinforcing potty training. Anyway, I think that if you are really good (and consistent) about crate training and potty training, your puppy will sleep through the night without problems.

My guy's crate is in another room, and
we always start the night in it, but he's
been peeing at night. Mostly I think because
he doesn't like to "go" before bed. We tried
putting a crate in our bedroom, but he barked
and whined until we put him back in his room
and his old crate. Now we wake up in the
middle of the night to let him out, and if he's
good and pees, and not in the crate, then he
gets to come to bed. I'm hoping its incentive
enough til we can fully trust him.evilicon
Oh and he's 9 months, but we've had him
for only about a month.

Congratulation on your new puppy

I have a 12 month old and a 14 week old. The 12 month old was 17 weeks when we brought her home, and could easily sleep 7-8 hours overnight without needing to go out. Our 14 week old may make it 4-5 hours and then have to go out. Luckily he is quick about going :) I have found crate training our boy to be so much more frustrating than it was with our girl. I have always made sure that he pees before going in, but he wont hold it at all durring the day. He doesn't enjoy sitting in pee, and is very vocal about it, but he wont hold it for anything. I have had to remove his bedding, reduce his space, and I only give him hard toys now (because he uses stuffies for pee pads). I am really hopping he picks up on it soon. Our girl only had a handful of accidents in her crate ever, but she was very vocal and adamant that we were going to let her out.

Oh crate training a Frenchie can be fun - they cry like babies for us to let them out of their cribs - It can be hard to deal with, but if you stick with it the pay off is worth it.

Whether or not he can hold on 7-8 hours is going to depend, above anything else, on whether or not he stays asleep all that time ;) At that age, he probably will have a bladder large enough to cope with sleeping that long - but I think it's likely that the first few days in a strange place he may well wake anyway. And if he does wake, he's going to have to pee.

Like all mammals, pups can hold their bladders longer overnight - because they're sleeping. Deep sleep is the body's growth and repair phase, during which non-essential bodily functions like urine production slow down. Once he's awake (for any reason) then it's full steam ahead again, and emptying the bladder will be a matter of priority LOL

During the day, a good rule of thumb for how long you could expect a pup to hold on in a crate, in hours, is the age in months + 1 to a maximum of 8 hours. So your 14 week old, being just past 3 months, could probably manage 4 hours (but should not be asked for more than that) during the day. Outside the crate and active - expect him to need to go hourly at least ;)

Dari was about 12 weeks when she came home.. and was I ever lucky.. she slept thru the night from the begining..

One thing that I did.. no water after 6 PM.. and the last walk was at about 10..I woke at about 5 and put her on the pad (until she was able to go outside.)..then took her in bed..

After about 2 months or so ,she got to come into bed in the middle of the night.. Finally when she was about 6 months she slept full time in bed..

And yes, her crate was in my bedroom.. with a light cloth over it...

My best friend has a saying.."They can cry longer than we can listen".Aint that the truth...

Dari's breeder keeps the pups in his bedroom for the first 6 weeks.. then they are in the kitchen; never alone...
