My english bulldog, who is 2 years old has been rubbing his butt on everything. i read somewhere it could be his anal gland? has anyone had experience with this? Can a groomer take care of this issue, i thought i saw in an advertisement near my work that one does it.
thanks for ur help.

Yes, it might be the anal sacs... I have read about this and I believe there was someone who posted the same problem in this forum...
Here's what I found on the net.... http://www.animalclinic.com/analglnd.htm

Brandon,
I was just at the vet ... you can 'aspirate' the anal glands yourself by 'massaging' the anus. Be sure to have on gloves and/or a paper towel. If it's just a fluid build-up, then the stuff that sort of leaks out will be brownish and, yes, nasty. If it's an infection, it will be puss. Some dogs simply get duct blockages that cause the fluid build-up and it's not a big problem - just aspirate it yourself. However, if it is happening contantly, it could signify an obstruction that has to be cleared/cleaned by the vet. Which will probably lead to an infection. And, if it's an infection, then you don't need me to tell you to race to the vet!
I have also read that, if this is a constant problem for a dog, then the anal sacs can be surgically removed. I haven't spoken with my vet about that (our problem is minor) - just info I'm passing along.
Good luck - and ick!!

Also, and I'm sure you don't need me to remind you, butt scooting could indicate any variety of worms - even a tapeworm. More ick!

[QUOTE=Martina]Brandon,
Even if the anal gland problem is fairly chronic, it can suddenly stop being a problem. We were getting Madison's anal glands emptied at the vet once or twice a month, then suddenly it just ceased to be a problem anymore. Oddly enough this happened not long after he went on allergy shots. I do not know if there is any connection here or just coincidence, but I am glad we no longer have to deal with this.

It sounds like he's itching - which would lead me to think that it's some sort of worm situation and not an anal gland/duct problem. Have you checked the poop or seen any squiggly things at the anus? It sounds like a call to your vet is in order. They'd be better able to tell you if it sounds like worms (or anything else) and tell you if you need to supply them with a stool sample.
good luck!!

Are your dogs doing the "sit & spin"? Luna is doing it too. I thought it was the anal glands, so we had Luna's butt squeezed, but it didn't do anything. I read somewhere that it's from allergies - wish I could find that site again! Morgan (my husband) claims that they just do it for fun. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

Dot did this also, I thought it might be irritated because of their build they can not lick themselves clean like other dogs. I decided to clean her behind daily with a some tissue paper made wet with some water and it worked she does not do the sit and spin anymore appicon

i've learned that the "sit and spin" behavior is often allergy related, but can commonly be caused by mite infestation. my male frenchie came from the breeder with scabies mites, which we did not discover until he had developed a skin infection on top of the infestation! he passed the mites on to our female, and they both did the maneuver until the mites were finally all cleared up. my female also liked to wail like a banshee while she was doing the spin. since frenchies are so susceptible to skin issues, it's always good to double-check all of these things.
