Little Bo has been having allergies (I think) lately. He snores extra loud and I can hear rattling mucus in his little nose. He has been coughing a lot and hacking but nothing comes out- like something is caught in throat. I am assuming that it is allergies and I give him a half of a benydryl and that seems to help. Is there anything else recommended for this? The eyes get goopy and the nose runny too.
He seems to be in discomfort and I want to help.
Any suggestions?
Thanks everybody.

Can it be kennel cough? Even though they get their vaccins they can still get it. You have different kind of forms of kennel cough, just like the flue for us humans.

Do you think I should take him to the Doctor for it?
It seems that the benydryl helps- so I thought it was allergies.
He goes to dog day camp a lot- could he have gotten it from there?
What to do?

I just called the vet & am bringing him shortly. I dont want to take any chances with my little pudgywumpkin. Thank you for your advice.
Wherever a lot of dogs come together you have a chance that they can get kennel cough. When you do not see any improvement in two or three days after it has started, you had better go to the vet. Mo had it a few weeks ago, it started Friday afternoon, I decided when it did not improve before Monday I would phone them, luckily I did not have to.

I do hope that Little Bo is just fine, but I think it is a good idea that you are taking him in to be sure. Please let us know how he is doing.

LIttle Bo is sick. The doctor gave him meds and said that he should recover fully in about a week.

I am glad that you took him in. Please keep us posted. We are wishing him a speedy recovery. Did the doctor say what was wrong?

There must be something going round the dog world ... it sounds like what my two have. I too thought it was allergies, but they're on medication now. And the dog down the street got it too. The first time Lola started with the cough I nearly jumped out of my skin! It sounded like she was coughing up a lung and her whole little body shook. The doctor doesn't think it's kennel cough, though.
You can tell they felt kinda crappy - and I felt so badly for them - poor little things! Runny noses and goopy eyes ... the cough is gone and their noses are now clearing up, but their eyes are still goopy. On top of it, we're having a heat wave here in StLou (heat index of 107 today) and they don't get to go out and play during the day - not that I want them to if they're under the weather health-wise, but they just love their playtime!
But I know they're getting better because they had a huge burst of energy last night and again tonight at about 10pm -- running, chasing, rolling around. They'll be settling down shortly. All I know is that I'm glad to have them energetic again!
They seemed under the weather for about 5 days each - tired and didn't eat as much. Hope that Bo gets well soon!

The doctor didn't seem too sure of what it was but she said it was probably viral and that the snot was a little yellow so it was probably a little infection. They probably don;t really know what it is but I went on the internet and I read a couple descriptions of kennel cough and his symptoms matched identically: the hoarse cough, the runny nose & gagging, etc. I felt more knowledgable than the doctor. Anyway, he is on 2 meds- and he has been sleepy & groggy a little. Will keep everybody posted!!
Poor little Bo, I am glad that he now is getting meds, You must feel so relieved to know what is going on :) Like Pattie I am curious what the doctor said what it is.
