hi everyone.
sorry :( im begginning to feel like a bit of a hypocondriac (on behalf of manja!) because i keep asking health questions. but i have another one.
Is it a french bulldog thing to have a sort of extra 'film' inside the eye? I dont know how else to describe it. Its kind of like what a frog would have I guess, surrounding the pupil.
Anyway sometimes it can look a little freaky when it moves and covers part of his eyeball. (do ou know what i mean???) anyway, lately that part is always a little reddish. But not his actual eyeball, just the film thing. Any suggestions? i tried tp put some mild eyedrops in the other day but he wouldnt keep his head still. I hope its not just something frenchies have to live with!

I can't figure out exactly what you are describing. Can you call your vet and ask? I have seen many posts lately (on other sites) with questions similar to yours. I would recommend that you consult your vet before you medicate. Hmmm...let us know what you find out and I hope all with well with your sweet pup. Carolyn

Madison does not have the problem you describe. Katie does have some problem with her eyes. The way I seem to remember the vet describing it to me was like there was some kind of covering to her eye that sometimes we can see. The way hers is, she has eyelashes that actually irritate the eye sometimes & we have to give her drops the doctor gave her. It really does not seem to be a serious problem & seems to bother us, more than it does her. It happens sometimes & I do not know what triggers it. She will go a long time without this happening & then suddenly it will be a problem for a little while. But when in doubt, it is always best to have your vet take a look.

hi
thanks for the replies
I had a look at the photo of Mo and she has the same thing i was trying to describe (you can see it in the corners) except Mos dont look that pink. I guess its normal. manja eyes just make him look like he is tired all the time.
Anyway ill be sure to see a vet if it becomes worrying.

All dogs have a third eye lid and it moves "in and out" for lack of a better term. There is also a tear gland that can come out; this is called Cherry eye and it looks like a big blob.. go to the site that Martina used and put in dog and cherry eye. This does NOT sound like what you are describing. Your dogs' eye may be irritated by allergies etc.
But Carolyn is right, go to the vet and have it checked. It is a very bad allergy season here on the East coast and can cause this kind of reaction in animals. But , best to ask the dr before you self medicate.

I realized after I put that in that the site I referred to was about tear staining and not the nictating 3rd eyelid - oh well! Lola's third eyelid is also very visible and really, really red (everyone's always asking me what's wrong with her). Well, we finally started on benadryl (as suggested by the vet) for allergies. I started on 1/2 of the children's dose once a day working my way up and now we're at 1/2 the adult dose twice a day and it seems to finally have the redness under control.
But the really funny thing is that with Gigi in and out the hospital this past week, Lola's eyes have been clearest on the days that Gigi's not here -- which makes me wonder if she's allergic to dogs!! Isn't that just a hoot and a half?!?! A dog that's allergic to dogs! Of course, I can't really say that's so, but it does tickle my funny bone :D
