I have a new FB puppy (Elle). She is ten weeks old. The question I have is if wetting while she is asleep is normal. It is not all the time, but it is frequent. She is still recovering from hernia surgery so I am also wondering if that might have anything to do with it. I have asked her vet about it and he said that I shouldn't worry and she should grow out of it. Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts or information on this. Thanks.

10wks is still pretty young so I would say it is normal but I am not an expert. Is she crate trained and going in the crate? do you let her drink water all evening until bed time? and how long before bed are you feeding? Some frenchies take a looooonnnnnggggg time to housebreak I am told. Biggie was pretty much housetrained when we got him at 4 months but he did have a few accidents the first couple weeks. Poor little baby, surgery already...what a trooper!!!!

Her crate training and housebreaking are going well. I live in a high rise condo so I am paper training her at this point on the patio and plan to work on yard training when she gets a little older. I leave the sliding door open and she is going out to the patio and using the paper on her own about 90% of the time. I have a puppy pad in her crate along with her bed and she will get out of her bed at night and use the puppy pad. She does have the wetting problem in her bed sometimes when she sleeps, or if she goes to sleep with me or elsewhere. I have been letting her drink as much water as she wants, day or night, so maybe I should consider limiting her water in the evenings. She is recovering from her surgery very well. Thanks.

I may have misunderstood, but it sounds like you keep a bed in her crate. If this is the case the crate may be too large. A dog will mess in it's crate if it has room to move around too much.

I got manja when he was 10 weeks old as well, he's only 5 months now but it feels so long ago! I do remember that I would also find little 'accidents' in his bed occassionally but i think at this age puppies dont really have that much control over their bladders. Perhaps your baby already has the right idea (as you said 90% of the time hes successful) but the time between their brain registering that they need to go and it actually happening is almost nothing, until their bladders mature a bit. I could be wrong, this is just my opinion, but i would notice manja would make an effort to go to the right place and then just not have enough time to get there. Dogs have a natural tendency to not want to wet their beds ( by the way i gave in and manja always sleeps with me now ) and at first he wet the bed a few times but only because he was so little and couldnt get off by himself. Now he's fine.
I agree about the crate. There shouldnt be enough room inside for a pee pad as well. With this set up you may be teaching your pup that its okay to go inside the crate. I think the crate is only supposed to be just big enough for the pup to lie down and turn around and i think with every 2 months of age they can be expected to need to go once an hour. hope ive been helpful :)

I was wondering if you got Elle from Willow River in Oklahoma. The pic you posted is the exact background and set up as Little Bo's puppy picture from their website. I think they use Sebastian Pierre as the stud so Elle & Little Bo are probably brother & sister. They look alike too!

Yes, Elle did come from Willow River and Sebastian Pierre was her stud, so Bo and Elle are brother & sister. And they do look almost identical. Unfortunately, my experience with Willow River was not exactly positive. Elle was shipped to me only a few days after having two hernia's repaired and I was not informed of it until the night before she was shipped. I took her to the vet the same day I got her and the vet said she should not have been shipped in her condition. One of her hernia's then became infected after just a couple of days. I immediately took her back to the vet who said she needed another operation immediately. When I contacted Willow River about this to see if they felt responsible and would pay for half of the cost of the surgery Carl Lampley, the owner of Willow River, told me NO that she did not need to go through another operation and to just send her back and he would refund my money. I of course knew what that meant and I was certainly not going to do that. Not to mention the fact that we had already fallen in love with her. So I went ahead with the surgery and another $1,200, drainage tubes, and a few weeks later Elle was completely healed and healthy. The vet said the infection was due to the use of improper stitches during her hernia operation. Anyway, Elle is now 4 months old and a wonderful, happy puppy that is the joy of our home and lives. I hope your experience was more positive, but I could not recommend Willow River to anyone based on my ordeal and the lack of concern shown for Elle by the owner of Willow River.

I had the same experience with Carl @ Willow River. When I rec'd Bo, he was diareah for 3 days straight -every 15 minutes. it was a nightmare- Carl would not respond to my voice mails, faxes or emails. I didnt care though because it was my baby by that time just like you said. It is unfortunate that we both had the same bad experience. Little Bo was born on 1/6/04 and still is not housetrained properly. He seems to be doing so well with going outside and then he will up & squat wherever he pleases. Other than that- he is a little fat babie whom we adore!
