It's always very frustrating to see things like this that are presented in such a way as to cast PETA in the worst possible light. PETA faces strong opposition on many fronts by industries ranging from fur to meat to pharmaceutical companies, so it's no surprise that they are never praised for the vast amount of progress they've made in the animal welfare field.

The euthanasias in the story took place in North Carolina where the majority of the shelters are an utter hell for animals. I can't begin to describe the conditions. They are not warm inviting places with a focus on adoption. The animals who were taken from the shelters and euthanized were on the death list, simply waiting to be shot in the face, as is the choice method of killing in those shelters. PETA has never held itself out as believing that no animals should ever be euthanized. The organization is opposed to no-kill shelters where animals often linger in cages for months, even years, going unloved and unstimulated, all the while developing neurotic behaviors from being perpetually confined. In my opinion a peaceful release from life is by far more humane than living in a tiny space behind cold bars or being killed in a hideous manner.

As an active PETA member and former intern, I know the person who is being accused in the story and trust her judgement on animal welfare. While it is impossible to know all the facts in every situation, this is an organization that has scored countless major victories for animals over the years. Also understand that PETA is a community of people like you and me who share a common passion for animal welfare. It is not some government-like entity where all acts conducted in its name are actually endorsed. Over the years there have been many individuals who claimed to be acting in the name of PETA carrying out activities that the majority of the group would never support, often giving the organization a black eye. As will all things in life, take this story with a grain of salt and be aware you are NEVER receiving all the relevant information.

I certainly cannot explain it. As I mentioned, it is impossible to know the all the facts surrounding what, in the end, may truly be a heinous crime. I was not there nor am I privileged to any "inside" information surrounding the occurence. I have no wish whatsoever to get into a heated discussion over this, as it is not the proper place. My intention is only illustrate that this very damning story is NOT a comprehensive summary of the events and that we must not be anxious to take everything we see and hear at face value. It is my understanding that there are charges pending and it is appropriate to refrain from passing judgment until the outcome of those charges are known.

From the site rules:
Political, religious, moral or military-related topics are not allowed: this is an international community and there are other sites for that kind of topics.
Whatever else it may or may not be, PETA is most certainly always a political topic.
