Since bringing my puppy home last week, I've noticed that she has sometimes has little bodily spasms when she is sleeping. They last a second or two and she sleeps through them. Are these indicative of a problem, or is this normal in puppies? Please let me know. Thanks.

hmmm... well I guess that's how you define "spasm".
Stella often twitches, huffs, puffs, chatters her teeth (she used to grind them too  ) and her eyes flutter when she's sleeping... I always wonder what she's dreaming about?
At first it kinda freaked me out too.... but I'm pretty sure it's normal.

Is this the kind of thing you're talking about?

Hmm. With Lola, she sort of vibrates for a second, in addition to the little grunts, eye rolling and whatnot. It's almost like a shiver.

Dobby is 5 1/2 months and he sometimes does that while asleep. My Boston who's 3 1/2 years also does it. I think they're just dreaming, it's kind of funny though seeing them do that. :)

A similar discussion on this lately -

Yeah, when I first witnessed it with Cookie, it was like 2 AM and it was just me and her, I thought she was possessed! LOL

It's totally normal...and creepy! My dog often sleeps with his eyes nearly completely open and his eyes are darting all over the place.

Just as Lilydog said, it happens most often durin Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, the stage where dreaming occurs. When our dogs (and us) enter REM sleep, our muscles become limp (atonic is the word for it) and we cannot coordinate movement. It is thought this "paralysis" of our muscles keeps us from jumping out of bed or running out the door when we are sleeping and dreaming. So, the theory goes, that because we cannot execute a controlled, delibrate movement, we twitch when we dream. Oh to have a glimpse of a dog's dream! From the way my pup jerks around during a nap, he's having the time of his life!!

Ferris often sleeps with his eyes open and yes...it is creepy. Abby has never done this...???

Puppies are just like children...they have twitches while dreaming. Abby is such an athlete and when she finally goes to bed...she sleeps soundly with very little dreaming/twitching. Ferris is not quite as active and he moans, barks frequently. We gently wake him up and he settles in. :p

In addition to twitching when they sleep, sometimes my dogs (especially my AST) also bark! it's an adorable sound, because the mouth still stays closed! I bet she's chasing cats in her dreams... (for the record - she has never harmed a cat! She just would like to chase them... )
