I have been reading in several books and aother sources of information that French Bull Dogs need very little exercise and they should not be given a lot of exercise.
Unless my frenchie is a freak of nature she seems to love exercise and long walks. From what I can see from the photos on the website there seem to be some fairly active frenchies!! Could you please advise as to what you recommend?

Thank you for your prompt reply and especially for the useful information regarding the rule based on age, that is very useful to know.

Well be assured, your Frenchie is not a freak of nature :D The Frenchies I know all enjoy exercise and long walks :) These are photos which I took today during our 1 1/2 hour walk on the heath with Dot, Mo, Diesel, Bambi, Sissi and Ushi. Frenchies with whom we walk regularly on the heath. http://80.126.213.52/~roos/dotkom/images/other/6bulletjes/index.html I must add though not all Frenchies are able to do this, Frenchies for example with breathing problems.

I don't think you can do long hikes in the mountains but walks of 1 or 2 hours should not be a problem and on occasions walks that are a bit longer. With puppies you have to be careful, the rule is to add every month five minutes to the duration of the walks, for example with a puppy of 4 months you can walk for 20 minutes (4 x 5 minutes) till they are about 1 year old than it is safe to do longer walks with them. It is important to build up their physical condition gradually.

With warm weather you have to be careful that they don't get over heated, when there is no water to cool them off I keep the walks short. There are quite a few Frenchies who have died of overheating :(

yup i would have to agree definately be careful with them when they are young.
biggie would have played until he threw up if we did not recognize that he was tired when he was younger. for us, it's pretty easy to see when he is tired/overheating as he literally turns all pink in the face. biggie is very active, but also does get tired with too much hard play. I too thought he would be a couch potato from all I read about frenchies but he is not!! no way!!! If your frenchie has breathing problems then you will want to keep the long jogs to a minimum but I'd say use your best judgement Your frenchie is by no means a freak of nature she is a little angel!!! :D

Whoever wrote that Frenchie's don't like to go on long walks, must know my Madison & my dad's Katie evilicon . Neither likes walks. They will play all day, but hate going for walks. Katie will run all over the yard, but does not like being walked. So I guess that there are 2 kinds of Frenchies when it comes to exercise.
