I don't know how else to say it except ... Remember that song by Hall and Oats - "Maneater?" ... Well, replace MAN with POO and this equals "LAMONT"

Why? Why? WHY?
Does it taste good? Is it an alternative lifestyle thing? Like c'mon!

Turn my back for one second and he's lappin' it up ........ It's just SOOOOOooooooooooo NASTY I can't even explain.

You would think the tourture of having his mouth cleaned out afterwards would be some sort of deterent but Noooooooooooooooo.

GRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrr.

Any other "POTTY MOUTHS" out there???
ADVISE from the wise, as always, appreciated.

P.S. - I know people may ask - we feed Wellness kibble and have recently added fresh vegetables and fruit to Lamont's diet ...

Stella prefers the "feline" variety...
I have to watch her like a hawk when we're at my parents house as she tends to go litter-diving

as for the why? beats me.... but this is also from the animals who sniff bums to say hello

Oh yes.... Those yummy .. "Kitty Crunchers".... also a fan favourite of Lamont's

Lamont, you dirty boy!

First off, I would avoid kissing.

Secondly, I heard feeding them fresh pineapple makes them stop. Old wive's tale? Worth a try! Worst case scenario is that you have to make a fruit salad.

I guess I should consider myself lucky. Abby goes for rabbit droppings....a nice, small snack she graps while cruising about the yard. Oddly enough Ferris doesn't have any such nasty habits. appicon

Ewww. That's why I don't let Clementine kiss me on the lips.:p .

What? No on the lips kissing? Lamont Practically eats my whole face!
Mind you, not after any poo eating.

ClemsMon - get some kissy action going - you're missing out. They don't call them Frenchies for nothing! :D

That's becasue Ferris is a refined gentleman. Lamont would do well to learn a few things from such an upstanding Frenchie!

Lisa,

Both Cookie and Dobby are on Wellness kibbles too, and I guess I'm one of the lucky ones because neither of them has, errmm... poo cravings, so to speak. In fact, Cookie is afraid of her own poo, I'm serious, everytime she finishes doing #2, she will LEAP away from it as if the poo would jump up to bite her butt! Sometimes she even looks back at it while running away, now that just cracks me up, does she think the poo is going follow her? LOL! That being said, when she was little, she did like to pick up duck poo when we went to the pond/lake, I literally had to open her mouth and scrape it out with my finger! YUCK! But then again, she pretty much would pick up anything from the ground at that age. She has since outgrew it, well, at least 95% as I'd like to think.

I think the two links Jessica provided above have some good info/advices. In the mean time, if it makes you feel any better, I've heard that some dogs like it "fresh right out of the oven," or "straight from the tap" from another dog, sorry to be so graphic, but that's really EEEUWWWW!!!

Well I am here to burst your "Ferris is a gentleman" bubble. When he was a pup he put a very well placed poo right into my cherished sheepskin slipper! :(
I have long since forgiven him only because my mother brought me a new pair back from Australia! That aside....yes...Ferris is a good boy and has grown into a gentleman. ;)

Thanfully Dari does not have this particular taste; and the litter box is in the bathtub so she has not has a chance to sample that delicacy..

As for Frenchie kissing...instead of the tongue in the mouth, she aims for the NOSE! with a full blast of Frenchie snot at the same time...
If you are so blessed to get affection from my dog; it is a double whammy...
I do hold off kissing her for a while after we see people....

This only works if it's his own poo he's snacking on. Courgettes apparently have the same effect.

Yes, the dreaded poo snacking. Molly has the same issue - was really bad at our doggy daycare - they watched her like a hawk, but sometimes couldn't catch her in time. Our vet said this habit may have contributed to her current vomiting issues. Molly is trying "Forbid" issued from our vet it is a powder for her food that will deter her from eating her poops. Yech. Hope it works, I was assured it is safe. Only good for stopping her from eating her own though. We are praying she grows out of this habit!

I'd just like to add another charming habit Lamont has picked up over the last little while …

Rolling in dead things.

Yep … he’s a pig alright.

That’s ROLLING in DEAD THINGS.

The little squeaker!
Have to admit, the vision of Ferris doing that ... (I'm grinning from ear to ear right now)

However, the vision of you finding the little nugget??? I'm no longer grinning!

Must admit, I do hope Lamont grows up to be like Ferris ... from what I've read and the pictures I see of him, he (to me ) is the ideal .....

not dog poo here, but PARROT POO!!!! we also have an african grey parrot, and our two frenchies wait patiently for cleaning cage days, when some poop accidentally will fall on the hardwood, and it is a fight to the death between them, the poop, and me! i win at least half of the time.... not a great average..... who'se in control here anyways...?????

Lisa....how I found his little "nugget" was when I place my foot into the slipper!! :( Jim laughed himself silly, as did Fran! Lamont is a good boy and I am one of his biggest fans! Ferris does melt my heart....he is an interesting combination of goofy and sweet. Abby is most definitely MY girl....but I do enjoy the boy in Ferris. ;) Kisses to Lamont!

I'm currently reading a book called "Wild Health" by Cindy Engel that addresses both these topics
Rolling in bad smells : volatile oils/strong smells interfere with bacterial respiration therefore are detrimental or repellant to arthropods and insects. Its nature's insect repellant.
Poop eating: herbivores do it because it adds to the supply of essential bacteria/ gut microflora that helps break down plant cells enabling greater extraction of nutrients from their food. A natural probiotic.

Rolling in dead things...
Not Dari; not because she does not want to ,mind you.She just does not get the opportunity.
When I was a kid, I went to summer camp and my Mom worked there (my Aunt owned the camp) Our beagle came up with us.
He was loose; EVERY night , he would come home having rolled in Cow Pies...My mother had to bathe him every night...

She almost sent him home with my dad..but he was at work..and came up every weekend..
I swear that dog had Eau d'Cow for months..

He did bring us some dead things at home as well...
And once a live rabbit. That was fun;trying to catch it and get it out of the house..

oh boy am i glad others are having the same issues as my little Orson. He too enjoys our cat's poos. We have tried correcting the behavior but he still enjoys going over to the litter box and inspecting it. Ohh well guess we will keep on with the corrections and hope he gets the message.

Frenchie snot! I knew there was a name for it!
Lamont COVERS everyone in it during a greeting.
Overall, it's not very well recieved by most people.

Dahiell is a real gourmet! He likes his kitty poo fresh and gets very excited when he sees one of the cats use the litter box. The cats are less excited.

Sulley thinks poo eating is about the best thing in the whole world. In a effort to expand his poo horizons I found him diving in the kitty litter box this morning. I'm beginning to think the "accidents" he has in remote corners are really his way of trying to save snacks for later. GROSS!!!

Just read the last few posts...Ewww!!! Thankfully, we have no poop eaters in our house! BIG time poop sniffers, but that's where it ends. It's a must do, that they take a good look at every poop they pass while walking! The observation is followed by a good sniff, but they always back off and seem to have a look like "Ugghhhh, gross!"

PS. I have a pile of paperwork that needs to be done and here I am on the computer writing about dog poop!

Penny has been trying to eat a lot of poo lately. She has acquired quite a reputation among the dog park regulars. They looooove to go on about how "helpful" she is, cleaning up poo around the dog run. I have worked hard on the "leave it" command, but that still means I have to watch her like a hawk the whole time at the run.

I do think that with her it is something about the undigested kibble. She eats a raw diet so she misses out on the dog twinkies, and I think she craves the salt and sugar coming out of the other dogs' butts...:p

Emily,
Even though Dari is a raw fed dog; as a treat I give her Triumph dog biscuits..She never has been a "poo eater"..Maybe try giving her a high quality dog biscuit?

By the way, I saw Penny's brother Dante; he is a twin to Rocky!

We will try some biscuits. We have added a veggie/oat mixture to her Bravo on Phil's recommendation...she is still going after the Baby Ruths (so to speak) so maybe a treat-y thing would work better.

You should see her, she's still so tiny, but SO lean and muscular and athletic; she gets a lot of compliments!!!

They live right near you; go visit.. But wait till Oliver (and Rocky ) are over Giardia AGAIN.. They got the vaccine..

Oliver does look like Penny..He is a HOOT.. the funniest dog.. He is in LOVE with Dari.. And she loves him...

Dante is the most adorable..It is like seeing a dopelganger...The next time Billie brings Dante in, I will let you know...

Hey all!! Sorry I have been MIA for awhile. I just had to comment on the poop eating thing. I have noticed Abby wont eat her poop when she goes outside but when she goes in the house(dang it) then she eats it. It is almost like she knows she isnt suppose to go in the house. What do you all think?
Oh and I am sooo glad to be back!!! :)

After we had corrected Orson for the poop eating we thought we had it licked (no pun intended) and it has been a month or so since his last poop eating episode then last night I went into the bathroom and i see he has his head jammed in the litter box with one of my cats watching him and loving it. i corrected him again but I think as long as i leave the hallway unblocked he’s going to want to go in there and dine... sigh* he loves my cat's poop. There, I said it... I feel better admitting that... I really do. It was hard but now its out. Orson loves cat poop!

Sadly,

Luckily our Belzie haven't found this delicacy since we have 2 cats as well. But something interesting I came across in Liz Palika's book "KISS guide to raising a Puppy" and other references. A possible (but not certain) reason is that cat (and dog) feces still contain enough nutrients as their intestinal tracks are relatively short.

One thing she mentioned as a possible "fix" is to ask your vet if there is anything that can be added to the dogs diet to make their feces "distasteful".(how much worse can poo taste!) :D

I suppose if you can add something to the dog's diet, maybe there's something that can be added to the cats diet to make it taste horrible... but again it's already poo!!! :D

But I would have to be suspicious of any "additives" to our pets diet without further research.

Dr's Foster and Smith sells a product called distaste (I think that's what it's called). I have used it in the past and it worked and a friend of mine uses it currently.

I was going to write about my problem with eating poops, and then I saw that my Tucker is not alone. We had to refence the poop, poop area to separate the cats area from the dogs. My vet says that they usually outgrow the habit at a year, but admitted that one of her dogs still eats after 5 years. Keeps me and my pooper scooper busy. Tucker and I race to see who can get to the poops first.

Hello- I may be a little late on this post but Louie started eating poop again after the arrival of his new brother- Chester. For a while BOTH of them were at it- OH YUK--anyway I went back to a product I used on Louie when he was munching as a pup- it is called Deter by 8in1. It really does work, I think we are on the road to non-poop-munching!!

Thanks for all the replies on this subject. Botti is still only 4 months old, so hopefully he also grows out of this habit. He never eats it when he goes outside or when I'm around watching, but when I have to leave him alone for a couple hours in his play area, he seems to try and eat it up.

Deter didn't work for me. All in all - it is a naturall occurance - all puppies I have had have went through this. My vet told me that Deter usually does not work and to not do anything but pick up the poo immediately.

Molly was really bad for this when she was younger - she would try to eat it all the time. Deter did not work for us either. Luckily, she has mostly outgrown this and at 9 mos. has pretty much kicked the habit.

I wish Ellie Mae would kick the habit...Do you think that switching her food might make a difference? Maybe it wouldn't smell so yummy to her. She is currently on Holistic Blend Chicken and Rice, Veggies. She is allergic to Lamb.

Any ideas on this???

Yes my sweet boy has started eating the
almond rocas in the kitty box. It is the self
cleaning kind, but it leaves a few "tasters"
behind. Its good to know he might outgrow
it, but has anyone found a product to feed
the cat to make its products less enticing?
I doubt she'll eat pineapple, but I could try
brewers yeast. Any other suggestions?

Put the cat box somewhere the dog can't get to it. We have our on the other side of a cat door, but if I ever leave to door open Belzie will make a beeline for it. Cat's have pretty inefficient digestive tract and the "almond rocas" actually have lots of nutrients in them = pretty irresistible treats to dogs. I am not sure it's something you can train out of your dog.

Ellie Mae grew out of eating her own poo, at least in front of me, but she still mows down on the Chicken poo around the yard and the Calf poo in his pen. It is quite commical to see her in the pen with with this little cow just a munchin. Every once and ahwile he will go over to see what she is up to and she will start licking the milk off his face. Very cute. So there is some kind of hope for the eating of their own poo to stop, but she has a nice soft shiny coat now from the calf poo!

This is sooo funny and an old post that just keeps going. Izzy doesnt eat poop But its so funny how some of you have to beat your dogs to the poop to get it before them . I read from the first post and laughed so much . Oh and the kisses , they do love to kiss every chance they get . I thought the butt licking was bad. Good luck to all you poop eaters.

It's true! We also have a poo eater! We have to keep on our toes to keep miss Mackie away from it! She's horribly addicted to it too! I had a female rottie who I think inherited it from her mother. Could it be an inherited trait? We tried everything to make her stop and nothing worked. I just hope Mackie will outgrow it! It's hard to kiss those lovable lips knowing what"s been there!!LOL!
