When Chopper meets anyone new he acts like a wild man. I bring him to work with me, and if someone he doesn't know very well comes in my office, he is jumping up on them. He even holds their leg with his front paws and jumps. I promise he is not trying to hump them, but it is hard to convince my customer of that. If someone comes over to our house and sits down on the couch, he immediately jumps up on them and goes right for their face. So, I'm wondering if the jumping on, when someone is standing up, is him trying to get to their face. He acts so crazy sometimes....like, I honestly see it in his eyes. He gets his scent on someone's breath and will not leave them alone. It kind of makes me laugh, but I know it is very bad manners. Anyone want to attempt to analyze? He is not aggressive at all. He is an intact male, but isn't a big humper. I don't know why he does this, but it's not good to do at my work. Help.

I share your dilemma. My dog acts like she has a rocket up her bum. Most of the time. My guess is that they just really love people & the face is the centre of emotion. I get your thing about work... we are going to try the recall training where you keep your dog on a super long (but not retractable) leash and don't let them off it until they recall properly. As for jumping up, do the "down" then "good down" and don't pay any attention to them when they jump up (try to get others to do the same). It's sorta working for us... when we're consitent –*that's the hard part!

I think Sidney might be the rare exception. He loves to meet people, but he usually won't jump up too often. Now some people just naturally excite him or they crouch down to say hi, which makes him want to jump up, but as long as people don't crouch down to their knees or get him all riled up, he usually will stay down. I started when he was young, but I only had to teach him a few times that he needed to sit (or at least stay down on all four paws) to get attention. In fact, many people have commented that he's such a polite dog because he doesn't jump to greet them.

It's really cute because now he walks up to random people on the street, sits at their feet, and looks up at them like, "Why aren't you petting me?"

Must be the breed! Never before have I had such "In your face!!!" doggies (*I have 2 frenchies, and a chihuahua who thinks he is a frenchie and behaves just like one, having been with them since birth!) Having owned big , "WELL BEHAVED" dogs behaved dogs before, (ah hem) i actually find them charming, accept them as they are, no matter how i try and train them, the stubborn streak comes out, and they just want to be RIGHT THERE , licking people's faces, jumping up. The non-doggie people are not impressed, needless to say, I try and keep my dogs away from those types......gotta love those frenchies, Maks is slightly more reserved. haha! no hope for Eiffel. The Chi is much more reserved unless he knows you, Frenchies are hounds for LOVE.........

Thank you all so much for letting me know that Chopper and I are not alone.
lilydog- Of all the things/health problems that we talk about, I can't believe we have this in common also. I read all of the comments on your post. It's really sort of funny.
I have this one friend that everytime she comes to visit me at work, Chopper goes crazy. She loves him, but if she sits down and puts him in her lap he goes right for her face.....then her ear...then her other ear...by this time she is dying laughing because she can't push him away. Of course, I'm hysterical too, so it is really hard to be consistent on your commands when you are laughing too hard. She is really a good friend to let him love her like that. She knows she's been initiated into the family.
I thought Chopper was a little on the odd side, but now I know he is just a Frenchie looking for lovin'!
Thanks everyone!

lola is also way into licking people's faces and jumping. my friend actually had to wipe her face off with a napkin after one particularly enthusiastic "hello."

i've found that the "ignore her when she jumps and love her when she sits" method is working. the tricky part is getting all the people that think she's adorable to do the same.

she's starting to reach the point of sitting when we greet people and especially if she's not getting the attention that she feels she deserves. so i guess there's hope.

Three Frenchies with that mark...Dari is the only one I have ever seen it on in person .And you have 2 of them...

We were at a Christmas party the first year I had Dari; all the dogs were running loose. Most were brindle; the only way I could tell which was mine was that white dot!

I have that same "in your face" and jumping problem with Piper. It's mostly my fault because I never really took the time to properly address them. Like others on the board I treat the incidents according to the person on the licking / jumping end. (Surprisingly ALOT of people LOOOVE the frenchie kisses! :p ) The problem I did address, tho, was the issue of people coming over for a party, sitting on the couch with a plate of appetizers, only to have Piper in their laps also eating out of their appetizer plate! That one in particular did not go over well one Easter with my 80 year old uncle! That was a fairly easy fix with a squirt bottle full of water and a spritz in the face while saying OFF. Problem solved still to this day. appicon
