Hi everyone,
Does anyone know of some websites that give you a tutorial about dog shows? I'm curious about showing. I have a puppy that started life with a submissive/timid personality, but since coming home with me has blossomed into an out-going pushy little monster (ha!ha!). Her breeders think her conformation is good enough to show, but initially thought her personality was wrong for it. Now they're suggesting that (maybe, BIG maybe here) we should consider entering her in dog shows (or allowing them to show her themselves). I know nothing about it, and we signed the spay contract when we first purchased her (though it hasn't happened yet since she is still too young). She'll definitely be spayed eventually, though, and never bred (since we don't like the idea of c-section surgery on our pet! Or even dealing with her "heat" cycles.).
It's all up in the air. Still I'm curious enough to want to do my own research on the prospect. Can anyone help me? Links? Websites? Books to reccmmend?

Contact your local breed club; go to www.akc.org to find out where it is.They can tell you where handling classes are.
The best way to learn is hands on.
A pup can not be shown before it is 6 months old; that being said, many shows have puppy matches. This is showing for practice for dogs/bitches with no points.
Please note; a spayed/neutered dog is NOT eligible to be shown under AKC/UKC rules.
Showing can be fun; but it also is a "sport" that is riven with jealousy and spitefulness. The cost of entry is high and traveling can run into money as well.
Most people want to "finish" :make a dog a champion , for the purpose of breeding..Reputable breeders breed to better the breed. Showing and finishing is one of the ways; in fact a major way to determine if you have a "breed" quality dog.
Think carefully about showing if you are not going to breed.. How about doing obiedience?

Also let me add; go to www.infodog.com All the dog shows are listed there.
If you have never been to a show, you should go and watch..Talk to handlers and owner handlers.
Ask where they take classes; if they have the time before/after showing.
Watch what goes on in the grooming area.See the interaction. All of this is part of showing.
Traveling and training.Grooming; yes Frenchies here in North America need to be groomed; competition and cost is all part of it.
I love to go to the shows; I am a pet owner with several close friends that show. Will I ever show? No....It takes all the enjoyment out of owning for me.

Thanks for the reply! I'll look more into it, and think about obedience as well (although it is laughable at this point, since she is not even house broken!). I was also thinking about canine freestyle, which I've only read about (and never seen). That's the new dog sport where people dance with their dogs. It sounds so cute, except that would mean that I'd have to dance too! I guess there's always therapy dog work...

You might even consider agility. Some of these Frenchies are amazingly agile and love to run and play. Of course it would depend on your individual Frenchie, but it's a thought!
I'm planning on signing Adora up in January just to try it and see how she likes it. She chases greyhounds at the dog park and can jump like a Jack Russell...

i highly recommend going to a dog show!
i went to my first last sunday, and met two beautiful dogs from l.i. by way of ky: oliver and rocky. both won in their class, both were amazing dogs. it was oliver's first show, and he kicked butt. plus, i had heard nothing but amazing things about this breeder, and actually seeing two of his dogs show, geting to pet them, meet them....it sealed the deal for me. (fran, i'll be calling you!)
really gives you a lot of insight into the breed when you see so many frenchies side by side (for the good and the bad). very eye-opening and FUN (and, i'll admit, a little funny. have you ever seen a dog having its coat FLAT-IRONED?!! i'm not even kidding...you can't make this stuff up).
also, for me it was quite cathartic...i hadn't been around a frenchie since i lost my pup. i swear, i think dogs can sense loss. it's oddly very comforting.

Noelle,
Did you know that Rocky and Oliver are Dari's nephews? And Oliver is Frankie Meatball's brother?
Dogshows can be a really good experience.. I enjoy going to them; seeing the dogs , meeting the people..
Can't wait for you to see Ms Dari!!

Actually Oliver took Best of Winners and Rocky took Best of Breed!!!
That is substantially more than winning thier class...
(don't tell,Oliver would not stand on the table to be stacked...But the Judge loved him anyway....).

OK. Let's see if Fran can do real geneaology. Dashiell came from the same Kentucy breeder as Rocky, Oliver, Frankie Meatball and Dari. If Rocky and Oliver are Dari's nephews and Oliver is Frankie Meatball's brother, please answer the following:
What is Dashiell's relationship to Rocky? to Oliver? to Dari? and to Frankie Meatball?
I'm not smart enough to figure this all out. Doesn't this sound like one of those math questions you got in high school?
Awaiting an answer,
Harriet

Ok,first the easy one..Frankie Meatball and Oliver are brothers..Thier mother is Tootsie..Out of Doc; a multi group winning Ch.
Dari has a sister named Cooper Penny; who has a daughter named Tootsie ; who is the mother of Oliver and Frankie Meatball..Tootsie is out of another Ch from another wonderful breeder.
Copper Penny was sired by Buli..Buli is the Granpa of Rocky; Oliver and Frankie.. Buli is Dashiell's sire and Dari's Uncle..
Rocky's mother is Erica; Dari's niece.. out of Jezebel (Dari's mom) and Buli..
Lest we forget: Buli is an Am/Ca mulit group winning Ch..
Got that??

I am very interested in getting into dog shows. I just got done reading a very helpful book: “New Secrets to Successful Show Dog Handling” by Peter Green. I suggest it to any one looking to get into showing their dog.
Donut and I are also planning on taking a mini course in show dog handling this January. So I am hoping to go to my first show in the Spring.
Any suggestions for showing a frenchie?

You should talk to Donut's breeder . I am assuming you bought him to show. Your breeder should be mentoring you thru this process..
Call your local all breed club..The people there will/should be helpful..Learn how to groom Donut..Yes Frenchies have to be groomed.Again, the breeder will tell you.
You might even want to get a grooming table to get Donut used to being up on one.
Going to shows is one of my favorite pastimes..Dari has two nephews that are near me; one is a finished Ch and the other has already gotten a major..
I go with thier owner to the shows and help him out..
