Hi! My little guy Rufus is the sweetest dog. Until another dog comes around, and then he is completely nuts! He is totally dog aggressive, it is so bad, I can no longer take him for walks for fear of running into another dog.
The vet said after he was fixed, he would improve. Nope. He will attack other dogs and bite them. He actually went after an Akita! He is fearless. I have tried so many things, and am at my wits end.
It sounds like most Frenchies like other animal companions. I am wondering why mine doesn't, and if there is anything I can do to change his behavior.
Thanks for any advice!

I have the weirdest case of dog aggression also.. my Lil Paris is quite aggressive towards large dogs.. I mean any dog that is bigger than him makes him nuts.. but smaller dogs, he'd get along well... Why is that?

Hello! Thanks for the replies. Devon and Lily, yes, he marks alot while out for a walk, or even in the backyard. If the kids leave a ball out in the yard, he will mark it, yuck! As for territorial aggression, I think that is part of the problem. When he went after the neighbors Akita, it was before we had our fence up, and he ran to the neighbors yard, and immediately started biting her on the leg. Lucky for us, she was a nice dog and just swatted him with her big paw. Didn't stop him tho, I had to pull him off.
He bit my friends dog while we were both at a neutral location. He also bit a dog in obedience class. When he is in the car, and sees a dog outside, he practically goes through the window.
The breeder that we got him from had many frenchies, and also boxers. He seemed fine around other dogs then. It seems that when we took him out of his pack, he started to dislike other dogs. I also need to mention that Rufus had a previous owner, who returned him to the breeder, because he wanted a show dog, and Rufus didn't fit the specs, he was too long in the back. We got him when he was 8 months old. I have my suspicions that the man returned him because of his aggression issues, but I can't prove that.
I really want to emphasize, this is the only time he is aggressive. He is so good with children. Even with my one year old niece, he is gentle as a lamb. You can put your hand, or your head for that matter, in his food bowl while he is eating, and he is fine.
It has gotten to the point where I am so afraid he will hurt another dog, that I have completely given up trying to socialize him. But I think he is missing out on alot this way. I would like to try again, but don't know where to start. There are so many different articles on this subject, all with different points of view. That is why I thought I would ask fellow frenchie lovers if this was, indeed, and french bulldog trait, or is Rufus just a stinker? But, either way, he is part of the family, and we love him, warts and all. :D
Thanks for listening!

Denise,
We have Frenchies turned into rescue for this very reason;dog aggression.
I think that in every breed, once in a while it happens.
Temperment is as much a product of breeding as it is of socialization. And some dogs ,no matter what the breed, just never learn to get along with others.
Thankfully,Rufus is people oriented..

I have recently heard of the NILIF training, and am starting to incorporate it into our routine.
I have never heard of the "no marking" rule while walking, could you tell me about that? Thanks!

Little Bo is very well behaved at Doggie Daycare with other dogs as long as he remains the alpha. He is ok with dogs at the park when they roam free. But if a dog comes near his property or yard, he will flip out and act aggressively toward them. I guess he wants to show he is the king of his palace.
