View Full Version : Raw Bone Question

I have been putting Allie & Baxter's raw bones in the fridge after they've had their fill of them and then giving them back to them the next day. I have a few questions...
If a bone is small and all the marrow has been cleaned out, how long should they be allowed to chew on that bone? If a bone is large and still has marrow, can you refrigerate the bone and give it back to chew for several days? I've been sticking to a 2 day limit on bones, just to be safe.
How about a bone that has been cleaned out, hidden and retrieved days later- should that be thrown out? I'm thinking it would be harboring some kind of nasty bacteria, but not sure.
Need some help with this...Thanks!

I don't normally give marrow bones (or any other weight bearing bones) at all. That's simply because I prefer to give the somewhat softer bones that can be consumed instead (better teeth cleaning, no risk of damage). So the question of how long Henri gets to keep his bone doesn't really arise in the first place - he consumes it.

But on the occassions he does get a recreational bone, then he keeps it until he loses interest, basically. That might be several days or it might be two or three weeks. I don't think there would be any harm in letting him keep it longer than that either - but if he appears to have no further use for it, then I just toss it and he gets another one some time later.
