On Tuesday, we noticed that Leroy(3 1/2 mos. old) had a small amount of swelling in the lower inner eye lid of his left eye. It progressed throughout the day, and started to give off a clear discharge. We immediately took him to our vet, who ran several tests on him including a test for scratches on the eye, eye ulcers, and a glaucoma test. She didn't seem too concerned about it and thought it was possibly an allergy. The vet gave us an eye drop made of Neomycin, Polymyxin B Sulfates and Dexamethasone Ophthalmic Suspension which we were to give Leroy 2x a day.
Yesterday it seemed as though Leroy's eye had not only not improved, but worsened : ( We took him to the vet again who ran more tests(inconclusive) and upped our dosage of eye drops as well as gave him a shot of Benedryl. She told us to give him Benedryl 2x daily in attempt to lower the swelling and redness.
If Leroy's eye does not improve by Monday, we are going to the Opthamologist.
So, my questions for you all are have any of you had similar problems???
If not, when your Frenchies have had allergies that effected their eyes, how long did it take for the Benedryl to kick in? Am I just being impatient? Does it take a while(more than a few days) for the Benedryl to start to reduce the swelling?

I'm so worried about our little guy!!

Guess I just needed to be more patient with the Benedryl!
Thanks for your help!

Our English was a regular at the ophthalmologist.
One of his tear duct openings (on the lower lid) would sometimes get clogged and they would have to “flush” it out. He was NOT happy about having this done.

They insert a tiny instrument into the hole of the duct and shoot a saline type solution through. This removes the obstruction – (dirt, sand, hair etc)

It’s fairly unpleasant for the dog although not overly painful at all (especially for a BULLDOG! – French It’s just very awkward.

Our ophthalmologist was only able to do the procedure once while our guy was awake (the first time it happened). All subsequent flushes, he had to be put under … :(

But once it was done, t (the obstruction removed) the infection cleared. It’s amazing how well and how quickly the eye heals itself.

If you end up going to an ophthalmologist, don’t worry… you’re doing the right thing. They are specialists and will determine the problem… After our dogs first tear duct problem, when it happened again, I just by-passed the vet and went straight to the ophthalmologist. …

Please keep us posted.
