View Full Version : What is a "safe" chew?

I continue to read posts on the dangers of greenies and rawhide. I know alot of you give bullysticks. Scout loves to chew bullysticks, rawhide, greenies, and raw bones. She will have nothing to do with kongs, or any rubber chew unless I put cheese on it, then she licks it off and is done. I always closely monitor her when she has rawhide or greenies, and take them away when they are too small. So, what are some safe alternatives other than kongs?

Have you tried a Kong Ball? My dogs love those... they don't have the shape of a Kong, they are round like a tennis ball. My friend gives knuckle bones to her dogs, but I've never tried them. They don't splinter and last forever and most dogs love them. I'm just not a fan of bones.

Beef bones! Buffalo bones!!! We bought one frozen at the petstore yesterday and that kept the dog busy for 3 hours. It gets pretty gross though. We make her chew it on an old towel and then we wipe her down with babywipes.

Penny likes bullysticks and nylabones.
Once she almost lost her mind over something called a "pizzle" which is a miniature bullystick.
We tried giving her cow ribs but she just licked the scraps of meat off and then was over it. It made a big mess.
I have heard good things about the kong ball; we might try it. She is currently obsessed with balls to the point where she no longer plays with other dogs at the park, she goes off by herself with a couple of tennis balls.

Solo loves her nylabones, too, the Durable kind, and bones, bones, bones! :)

I will try more bones...she did get some raw neck bones for treats, and she devoured them. I gave her a raw turkey leg last week, she loved that, too. So, just double checking, it is ok for her to actually eat the bone? Maybe she will like the kong ball, I have two of the sticks, and a regular kong, she has no interest after the treat is gone.

Bone is fine. As long as it's not cooked!

No interest in greenies here (thankfully). Would never consider a rawhide chewie unless it is one those "chopped up" composite things but even then I don't care for them. Abby is not a chewer but Ferris is. He loves his Kongs and his favorite is either the ball shaped Kong or the newest 5 inch circular Kong (all without peanut butter). Their favorite toy is a soft, stuffed toy. They will share, rip and tear and even after the stuffing has been extracated...they play with the remains for weeks. appicon

Roxy loves nylabones -- I have to keep a stockload of them in the house because she likes to "hide" them - they are constantly disappearing only to resurface weeks later. She circles the room looking for just the right place, gently digs at the carpet for a few seconds, places her bone down and then "covers" it with a few pushes of her nose....she gets all happy because she thinks she's done such a good job hiding it, when in reality the bone could just be sitting under the table right in my plain view. She's such a goofball.....
She also loves gnawing on frisbees, but they're too difficult for her to hide. She isn't a big fan of her kong toys, but I'm gonna have to try bullysticks....

My husband is a garage sale junkie. Last weekend we were on our way to breakfast when he slammed on the brakes and stopped to look at a neighbor's garage sale. There was a ton of stuff...mostly junk...but then he spotted a box full of really cute stuffed animals...mostly rabbits and teddy bears. :p He got the woman to part with them for 50 cents a piece. appicon She was so happy (probably imagining the happy little children who would inherit her animals) UNTIL he told her that they were for our French Bulldogs who would have hours of entertainment RIPPING them apart!! Did Jim stop at that? NO
Then he told her that once the animals had the stuffing RIPPED out of them...the Bulldogs enjoyed the "pelt" for months afterwards. I could see the look of horror on her face and I could totally tell that she wanted to change her mind...but the money was already in her hands. I remained stone faced until we drove away and laughed all the way to breakfast. :D

I have a question...these bullysticks, are they a type of stick or a brand name? I am in france and havent found anthing under the name bullysticks. Does that just describe the type of bone? Is it important what kinds of bones we give to the dog? Today we bought one in the pet store for aldo. I bought a big one cause I didnt want him to swallow it  ...i am so paranoid. I looked up bullysticks on ebay but I am still confused. Sorry for such a probably obvious question!! I am a little lost on the right treats to give.
Thanks!

 Penis of a cow!!! Wow. I can just imagine walking into a pet store here and translating that into french!! Haha. Or worse have my mom send me some from the US with "penis of a cow" written on the customs description slip  . Oh well now I know. Well I would give them to him if I found them but not sure I would actually touch one!!! haha. Are the bones that you find for dental care and stuff ok? Is there something I should definately avoid? I gave him a pig ear the other day and he tried to eat the small pieces as he broke them off. Thank god he puked them up after...ewww!!!!
Thanks!
