I am new here, but have been doing a lot of reading of the threads on the forum. I have always been wary of feeding raw bones to Phoebe, but read that quite a few of you do it, so I decided to treat her to a raw marrow bone today. She looked at it in horror and proceeded to *bury* it in the garden amongst the stones. I had to go out for a short while, and when I returned I saw that the bone has vanished and it is lurking somewhere in the house!!! I have looked in all the usual hiding places but I guess I will just have to wait and smell it out. Eeewww, Im not looking forward to that. Do any other Frenchies turn their noses up at raw bones?

Hi Phoebesmom: Hahahahahaha, love the fact that your Phoebe buried her bone. We had a cocker spaniel years ago and would give him one of those little treats that looked like a round steak bone (can't remember what they were called). Anyway, Sun would take it and roam the house looking for the right corner to bury it in. He'd finally find the place, put the treat down and then rub his nose on the carpet like he was burying it. This would go on for at least 5 minutes. He'd then sit there and stare at it or he'd come for one of us and we'd have to say, "where's your bone?" and he'd take off and then eat it. He was such a sweetie. I use to cook his raw bones and he like that much better than the raw, but one word of caution, be sure to throw them away. I found out that putting them in his toy box was not a good idea as they got maggots! Nasty!!! Bug, our nearly 8 mo. old pied Frenchie, gets an occasional bully stick and he buried that in the bedroom where our other dog's bed is. Jacksun doesn't use the bed and my exercise ball is on top of it. Bug spent quite a bit of time "burying" the bully under the ball. It was a hoot. I went and got it and he couldn't figure out where it had gone. He was so sure it was still under the ball even a few days later.

I gave Frankie a raw bone for the first time the other day, and he was thrilled. I lay a blanket down in the kitchen and have him stay on the blanket while he eats it. If he walks away from it, or tries to take it elsewhere, I gently take it away and try again, or put it away for a while and try later. It took him about twice and he got it. Now he keeps it on the blanket, or in his crate, and when he leaves it, I put it in the refridgerator until later.

Angel, I love your description of Sun *burying* his bone!! LOL, that is exactly what Phoebe does with her toy bones, and we have to try very hard to not giggle while she is rubbing the carpet with her nose, and always tell her what a clever girl she is to have *buried* her bone!! I am terrified of maggots in the marrow bone ~ that is the first thing that crossed my mind when I realised the bone had been transported from the garden into the house. I have searched high and low for it but cant find it anywhere! I had a good giggle at the thought of Bug searching high and low for her bully stick.. I can just see that cute little confused look!

I wish Phoebes had been as diligent as Frankie with her bone!!

Just a note to let you all know that cooked bones can be very dangerous to our dogs as the bones become very brittle when cooked. Please do not feed your dogs cooked bones

Paula - this may be a dumb question - but humour me :o

Are smoked bones the same as cooked bones? I bought some smoked bones from the butcher the other day - are those okay to give?

I have read that a lot of you give your Frenchies raw chicken necks. I have found a shop that sells them over here but I am terrified to give one to Phoebe!! Have any of you had bad results due to feeding a chicken neck. I am scared that she might choke on one of the little bones, or perhaps get something lodged in her stomach. Am I being over anxious? Do you supervise your babies while they are eating their treats? Sorry to sound so neurotic, but I am sometimes a very over protective Mum!!
