View Full Version : regurgitating food

When I brought Mojo home, I began the gradual process of switching him from the food he was being fed to Canidae. Everything went smoothly, until recently he has started to spit up some of his food immediately after eating. This is usually prompted by him drinking his water. I'm not sure if he is simply gulping his water too fast or if he may be having some kind of reaction to his food. Other than his "regurgitation" episodes he appears healthy, energetic, and has well formed stools. I thought briefly about the possibility of switching him over to Innova Evo, which my weimie eats, but I have had so little experience with small dogs, that I was a bit uncomfortable with the high % of protein and fat. My weimie has never looked as stunning as he does on the Evo--his coat literally shimmers and his muscle tone is amazing, but he also has run of the 10 acres and burns more energy than mighty Mojo.

Mojo is a puppy, right? In that case, I wouldn't recommend EVO for him. I think EVO is a great food, possibly one of the best available. But the protein level really is far too high for a growing pup. Small breeds may not suffer from growth disorders with quite the same frequency as larger ones, but that doesn't make a high protein diet any more appropriate for babies. Save that one for after he's a year or so old.
In the meantime, however, it doesn't sound as though the Canidae suits him that well. Canidae is a very good quality food too, but there's no food yet invented that suits every single dog. He may do better on something that contains a bit more fruit/vegetable material rather than grains. How about trying something like Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul? That's a good food also, with plenty of meat and a higher vegetable content that many people seem to find works well for their dogs. California Natural might also be a good choice, or even regular Innova (both made by Naturapet).

Thank you for the response. I completely agree with you regarding the Evo not being a good idea for puppies. In fact, I verified that through a phone call to one of the Innova reps who confirmed that this food is intended for adult dogs.
Chicken soup is available at the same store where I get the Canidae and Evo, so perhaps I'll give it a try. I just hate to keep switching Mojo's food; this if I switch from Canidae to CS puppy, it will be his third food in his short 12 week life. I've always been a proponent of rotating between foods, but I wonder if this is a bit much. However, if the food doesn't agree with him I guess there isn't much else to do. Back to the food finding drawing board.
