Tonight I came home from work, walked into the house only to find Abby staring at me with her face swollen beyond belief and her body covered in allergic bumps. For those of you who don't know Abby's history..she is extremely allergic to bug bites. Her face was so swollen tonight that she was starting to look like a sharpei. :(
We have always called my brother (who is also our vet) and he has treated her in his hospital at odd hours of the day/night after she was stung by bees. After the last visit he gave me a supply of injections (benedryl and dexamethisone) to give her in an emergency situation. Tonight I was able to inject her with these meds myself. If my brother were to give these shots...one would have been in the vein and the other in the leg muscle but I called Geoff (brother) and he instructed me to give the injections under the skin which I am comfortable doing. We have been watching over her and finally after 4-5 hours she is looking more herself. Keep in mind that I have been in constant communication with my brother the whole time and he felt she was doing just fine.
I am so lucky having a vet in the family and having access to these drugs in case of an emergency. I am also glad that I have learned to give injections. Abby is such a sweetie and she never fusses over injections and for that I am grateful. She is very sleepy at the moment due to the drugs. I'll be staying up with her for awhile more for my peace of mind before I tuck my sleepy self in for the night. I love Miss Abigail beyond belief and I say a prayer of thanks tonight that she is well and recovering.
